London Fields

...aforementioned novels use London as their primary setting, but they effectively portray it in two very different lights. “London Fields” paints the picture of London as a dark and ominous place full of sleaze and moral decay, while “White Teeth” contrastingly shows London as a mellow melting-pot of cultural assimilation and struggle. “London Fields” uses its slummy London as a center of corruption, drinking, gambling and murder, which allows it to remain functional and consistent with the characters that inhabit its realm of tragedy and utter chaos. The mere essence of this London embodies the very nature of human suffering, and it serves as an omnipotent cloud of impending doom, smothering everyone in its path with a blanket of immorality. Amis reveals the lower-class side of London with the persistent appearance of bars and pubs throughout the novel. This trashy and dangerous side of town symbolizes the downfall of humanity within the characters that frequent its streets at night; the nastier the London, the nastier the people. A prime example of this is depicted through the maniacal deterioration of Guy Clinch. Guy begins the novel as a trusting, upstanding individual whose kind nature is exploited by Nicola. Nicola is described as a “black hole,” which is eerily similar to the London she lives in and she is able to transform Guy into a philandering would-be killer. The downfall of Mr. Clinch signifies that even the strongest person will eventually be overcome by the pit of agony...

Marxism Approach

...displayed by the characters, especially Jimmy. He is from a working-class family and, although he has a university degree, has turned his back on the sort of well- paid white-collar job that such an educational background would normally have led to in the fifties, working as a trader in the local market, running a sweet stall with his friend Cliff. He and Alison, with Cliff as a lodger, live in a dingy bed-sit in a large Midlands town. Alison herself is from the wealthy upper middle classes (her father is a retired Indian Army officer) and her family resent her marriage to Jimmy. It was in the late fifties that the term "Angry Young Man" was coined by the critics to describe not only writers such as Osborne, Kingsley Amis and John Braine, but also their characters such as Jimmy Porter and Amis's Lucky Jim, who were seen as the mouthpieces of their creators. Jimmy is, to borrow the title of a famous film of the...

A&P by John Updike

...Xavian Arnold Dr. Patterson English 112 28 March 2012 A & P: An Analysis of the Character “Sammy” As people age, maturity and wisdom is gained through every experience. From the time a child turns eighteen and becomes an adult, they are required to deal with the realities of the real world and learn how to handle its responsibilities. In John Updike’s short story “A&P” the protagonist Sammy is a young man in 1961 New England who works in the town’s local grocery store. In a matter of a day, Updike goes from an immature boy with unrealistic ideas and fantasies, to a man who is about to realize how life altering the choices he makes can be. Sammy realizes that life isn’t always fair and that sometimes it involves the consequences that life can deal to anyone who has not had time to test a rash decision. Updike’s story illustrates that a part of growing up is a willingness to accept consequences of one’s choices, and that life's hardest lessons are sometimes learned a little too late. This story represents a coming-of-age for Sammy, as seen through his evaluations of the costumers as the story develops.  Though it takes place over the period of a few minutes, it represents a much larger process of Sammy’s growth.  From the time the girls enter the grocery store, to the moment they leave, you can see changes in Sammy.  At first, he only notices the physical appearance of the girls:  how they look and what they are wearing, seem to be his only thoughts.  As the story...

Success and Money

...SUCCESS AND MONEY The question whether money is a main indicator of people's success, is a controversial one. Some people believe that only one who earns a lot of money is successful. However, other people think one who does not earn a lot of money can be successful too. For several reasons, which I will list below, I agree with those people who think that money is an indicator of success. First of all, if a person earns a lot of money it means he or she has unique knowledge and experience and people want to pay for these. For example, a good lawyer is often paid a very high salary, because he or she has won many cases and people are ready to pay big money for his knowledge. A second example is that a salary of a surgeon simpliciter depends on his experience and knowledge and on how many surgeries he has completed successfully. In this case surgeon's salary simpliciter depends on surgeon's success. Second of all, a high salary is in an indicator of a prosperous career and profession. People change their jobs, move from one place to another looking for a more interesting and better paid job. Of cause, some people do not care about salary as long as they like their job, but from my everyday experience and observation I can state that the majority of people who are not satisfied with their revenue would exchange their current job for another one with higher salary. Finally, money plays, may be unfortunately, a very essential role in our modern...

Bus and Man

...How much can you trust online information? The article analyzes the effects of online information on perceived trust when there are either strong or weak social relationships between net pals or whether the perceived message is positive or negative and whether the product belongs to the experience (e.g. Hotels) or the credence (e.g. vitamins) goods. Nowadays consumers use online platforms in order to share opinions about products and services and that is the eWOM (electronic word of mouth) communication. The main question that the authors tried to answer is whether the costumers trust the information that they take from the source of the eWOM communication. The results of the research showed that consumers tend to trust the online information posted by net pals who are perceived to have stronger relationship to each other, than from those who are perceived to have weaker social relationship to each other. Another fact is that consumers trust negative information more easily than the positive one and also their trust is different depending on whether the perceived social relationship among net pals in the online community is strong or weak. Additionally, consumer’s attitude is being affected positively by overall trust and positive information posted in the platform about the product or the service. Another point is that the effect of positive or negative information through eWOM communication is stronger for experience than for credence goods. Finally, the strength of...

The Comparison of the Two Movies of Jose Rizal

...Comparison of the two movies: Jose Rizal and Rizal sa Dapitan Jose Rizal is a three-hour epic on the life and struggles of poet and patriot Jose Rizal, the national hero and martyr of the Philippines, played by Cesar Montano. Directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya, this is GMA Films’ entry to the 1998 Metro Manila Film Festival. It is considered as one of the biggest budgeted films in the Philippine movie history with a record of P80-million. This film was dubbed as the most spectacular and “controversial” Philippine film epic because of its record-breaking 80-million budget. The film won several prestigious awards and has also premiered at several well-known film festivals around the world including the Berlin International Film Festival in 1998 and has also won as the 2nd runner-up in the Audience Award of the Toronto Filmfest. The problem with Jose Rizal if that it concentrates on historical accuracy rather than artistic contribution. The film, as mentioned, is basically a history book adapted to film. My problem with this Rizal film is that the depth of this film’s Rizal is as much as the depth of Rizal you’d get from a high schooler’s Filipino textbook. However, there arealso negative comments that I must say about the movie. The plot was full of twists and turns. It is confusing to watch because of too many flashbacks and you couldn’t guess whether it is still in flashback or not. Also, some scenes are brutal, and some are not suitable for young kids such as the bed scene wherein...

Community Service

...For my community service I went to a church who donated to a charitable organization and I worked in the youth’s section. This was a great experience for me because I got to work with youth’s who were interested to learn. At the church we did different activities with each other, this was very interesting. We did different activities together which built a relationship as we bond and play. Helping in a youth group was exciting because I got to work and talk with people my age. I was able to help the younger children with their homework and I typed out documents. The attitude of the community was very positive. They followed the right pathway of God and represented the church well. I must say very proudly, that I didn’t occur in any problems during the different activities. The only problem I struggled with was dealing with the different attitudes presented before me. In a way this helped me a lot because it showed me how different people were in different ways. I did understand the different personalities and attitudes because everyone came from different family backgrounds. There interest with the people was well done; they made them feel welcomed and helped with any need they had. From this experience I did grow in many different ways, it allowed me to developed more conversations and help a lot of people out during their hard times. It also showed me that you can learn a lot of things from other people. This experience made a huge impact on my life, which can carry me throughout...

Reader-Response to John Updike’s “a&P”

...Reader-Response to John Updike’s “A&P” “Sammy, you don’t want to do this to your Mom and Dad,” he tells me. It’s true, I don’t. But it seems to me that once you begin a gesture it’s fatal not to go through with it (323). This statement made by Sammy after quitting his job, was made towards the end of John Updike’s story “A&P”. Sammy had quit his job, a job that his parents helped him to get. Sammy opened up a whole new world; a world that I don’t think Sammy was ready for. He made a quick and irrational decision, rather if it affected his life or not we would never know. One could make the assumption that yes he was affected, because he possibly brought shame to his parents. With it being a small town word gets around fast a there is a chance that Sammy wouldn’t be able to find a job any other place because of how he had quit he job prior. Sammy labeled the people whom were in the store as “sheep pushing their carts down the aisle” (321), as in how people were expected to act in society, being constrained, unable to be yourself. Sammy was different; he was an adolescent male who was just trying to find his way through life. A life where he wasn’t familiar with, he was socially inept and lacked a good education as you can tell from the language he used. Life was just about to change for Sammy. John Updike’s story teaches us that we don’t always have to have good reasons for the choices we make. Some of the choices we make are strictly based on our feelings and beliefs...

Pathophysiology Underpinning Mr. Farmer's AMI

...Question 4 Review the case scenario and summarise your understanding of the pathophysiology underpinning Mr Farmer’s AMI . Apply medical terminology (2 marks) From analysis of Mr Farmer’s condition, it can be understood that the pathophysiology underpinning his AMI was due to fatty deposits, plaque, having built up within the coronary arteries, which are responsible for blood supply to the heart. In Mr Farmer’s case, the plaque had built gradually over his life, and the plaque deposits limited blood flow to the heart and caused his long history of angina. Factors such as consuming regular take away food, smoking and physical inactivity had triggered his current AMI. Due to Mr Farmer’s unhealthy food intake, the saturated and trans fat increased...

...6. a. CMx=220-70-2x30-1.5x20=$60 CMy=350-110-4x30-1x20=$100 b. Objective: Maximize 60X+100Y Constraints: 2X+4Y≤12,000 1.5X+Y≤6,000 X≤3,500 Using Solver, we can find the optimal mix of X and Y is: X=3,000; Y=1,500. The corresponding optimal CM=$330,000 The solver output is shown below: c. The graph above consists all the constraints functions of this case. When x=3,000 the objective function achieves optimal solution. The optimal solution can only be achieved when the objective function’s slope is between 0.5 (the slope of constraint function 2x+4y=12,000) and 1.5 (the slope of constraint function 1.5x+y=6,000). 60CMy=1.5→CMyminimum=40 60CMy=0.5→CMymaximum= 120 Thus, contribution margin of Y can increase by $20 (=120-100) or decrease by $60 (=100-40) without changing the optimal product mix. 10. a. How Does Martin Amis Subvert Morality in Time's Arrow

...How does Amis subvert morality in chapter 2 Morality is the distinction between right and wrong. It is the determination of what should be done and what should not be done. Morals deal with behaviours as well as motives. Tod's morality is questioned when polar opposition is reverded for example good is evil, wrong is right and guilt is innocence. Amis does this to make the reader question on their views on morality and describe what is seen to be wrong or evil to them as something good and innocence. This links to the how Amis describes the holocaust as an ironic and humorous thing to ridicule the nazi ideology and how it was ironic as the they set out to create the perfect race and make the Germany a better place by committing genocide because in their eyes they went against their idea of the perfect race, and doing this meant exterminating millions of jews and were doing the right thing. Amis explores the theme of morality through his use of temporal inversion as this allows him to reverse ideas of morality. In chapter 2 he reverses ideas of right and wrong. We can see this when he discusses the rape of women in the ‘crisis centres’ describing the perpetrator as “the men who suddenly heal them”. The word ‘heal’ implies that the men are heroes and take them away from a life of sadness which is problematic for a reader as it reverses the idea of right and wrong as it describes the men as the innocence and sinless and the women as weak and fragile. Also it says how “there's...
