...Multiple Protagonists and No Concise Antagonist Result in a Heartfelt Film The 1997 Steven Spielberg film, Amistad, the Hollywood strategy of having multiple protagonists in one film is exercised to perfection. This situation happens many of times in movies. But the fact that it happens in Amistad is noteworthy due to the fact this movie, a movie about the happenings of the trial after a slave mutiny aboard a Spanish transatlantic slave ship, contains a protagonist that was neither aboard the ship, nor is he black. The other protagonist in the movie was a slave on the ship, and a good portion of the movie depicted his plight both during the mutiny and during the trial that made the audience want to be on his side throughout the film. There is no clear cut antagonist in this film. Is it the nation of Spain who wants its “property” back? Could it be the two Spaniards that were the only surviving “victims” of the mutiny? Or better yet could it be the finders of the ship La Amistad? No, in fact the antagonist is actually an establishment. The first thirty minutes or so of Amistad starts out with the mutiny that takes place aboard the ship La Amistad. ...Paper 1 Amistad The first scene I choose to write about from the movie Amistad is the opening scene when the enslaved peoples take over the ship. I choose this scene because out of all the movies I have watched, this scene is one of the most brutal and intense scenes I have ever seen open a movie. Without knowing anything else about the movie, you have to know that Cinque was going thru hell before that. He was desperate enough to pick a nail out the floor board with his bare hands so that he could use it to free himself and the others from their shackles. Their actions in that scene helps you get a picture of how desperate the enslaved peoples were. This scene gave me a feeling of anxiousness and excitement. People always ask the question of why the Africans didn’t revolt against their captors, well in this movie they did. Being an African-American myself, it was good to see and to know that my people didn’t just lie down and give their lives up without a fight. Seeing those guys run full speed into gun fire reiterates how miserable they were aboard that ship, they were ready and willing to die. The boat was seized by the U.S. navy and the navy held the Africans as pirates. The “pirates” were imprisoned in New Haven, CT on charges of murder. Since Connecticut, being up north, there was a strong opposition to slavery and had worked to allow all African Americans after age 25 to be free after March 1, 1784. These are regular people who were taken by force out of their homeland, put in manacles, thrown on a boat to be sold s slaves. These people have the same natural rights that Americans are born with. The historical events the film depicted were not a story I was familiar with, and although the movie was at times violent and even brutal, I believe it truthfully portrayed an adaptation of what actually happened and what captured Africans were subjected to against their will. For me, one of the most significant parts of this film in the present day was the number of extremely well-known actors and who took part in the production of the piece directed by none other than Stephen Spielberg. Ruiz and Montes knew that they were breaking the law even when preparing to transport the slaves because they sought to transport them at night since they were unsure as to whether or not the ship with be searched by the British [1].
