Mary’s grandfather, Amos Deer Leg, changes how he views the world. Amos Deer Leg is traditional and very serious which creates conflict at the beginning of the story. The children complain and argue with Mary’s grandfather about how they must participate in Ta-Na-E-Ka while other kids in the younger generations don’t have to. According to the text, “ But my grandfather, Amos Deer Leg was devoted to tradition. He still wore handmade beaded moccasins instead of shoes and kept his iron-gray hair in tight braids. He could speak English, but he only spoke it with white men.
