The Conceivability and Divisibility Arguments

...mental substance (the mind). Only humans are such special unities. Animals have bodies but lack minds and angels have minds but lack bodies. Here’s the passage: First, I know that everything which I clearly and distinctly understand is capable of being created by God so as to correspond exactly with my understanding of it. Hence the fact that I can clearly and distinctly understand one thing apart from another is enough to make me certain that the two things are distinct, since they are capable of being separated, at least by God. The question of what kind of power is required to bring about such a separation does not affect the judgment that they are distinct. Thus, simply by knowing that I exist and seeing at the same time that absolutely nothing belongs to my nature or essence except that I am a thinking thing, I can infer correctly that my essence consists solely in the fact that I am a thinking thing. It is true that I may have (or, to anticipate, that I certainly have) a body that is very closely joined to me. But, nevertheless, on the one hand I have a clear and distinct idea of myself, in so far as I am simply a thinking, non-extended thing; and on the other hand I have a distinct idea of body, in so far as this is simply an extended, non-thinking thing. And accordingly, it is certain that I am really distinct from my body, and can exist without it. The key lines are...

I had looked ahead to thegrand adventure with eagerness but when it finally came, my leaving Rosales filled me with a nameless dread and a great, swelling unhappiness that clogged my chest. I couldn’t be sure now. Maybe it was friendship, huge and granite-like, or just plain sympathy. I couldn’t be sureanymore; maybe I really fell in love when I was sixteen. Her name was Teresita. She was a proud, stubborn girl with many fixed ideas and she even admonished me: “Justbecause you gave will be accepted.” It was until after...

The Character Medea's Revenge in Euripides' Medea Medea is a tragedy of a woman who feels that her husband has betrayed her with another woman and the jealousy that consumes her. She is the protagonist who arouses sympathy and admiration because of how her desperate situation is. I thought I was going to feel sorry for Medea, but that quickly changed as soon as I saw her true colors. I understand that her emotions were all over the place. First, she was angry, then cold and conniving. The lower she sinks the more terrible revenge she wants to reap on Jason. Medea's plan was set into motion. She has nothing to loose. She is even angrier because she betrayed her own father and her people for him. She even bears the burden of having Pelias killed...

...Marketing *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Political marketing sits at the nexus of two disciplines, political science and marketing, but is not entirely accepted by either. The present research looks at the origin, development, and evolution of political marketing and examines how the adoption of a political marketing orientation is impacting the practice of political campaigns. The role of political marketing in actually changing voters’ preferences is also examined, showing that grassroots marketing efforts seem to have the greatest effect, especially with undecided voters. Finally, voter segments are derived for the last five presidential elections in the United States (1988-2004) using latent class analysis (LCA). The interpretation and implications of these segments are discussed and several avenues for future research are suggested. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES ................................................................................................................... vi...

Sunpower

...position as the producer of the world’s most efficient solar cells, also known as photovoltaics or PV, and recent forecasts that solar power might be on the edge of explosive growth, he knew that he’d be asked some tough questions. Werner wondered how fast the solar power industry was likely to grow and how long SunPower’s advantage was likely to last. How could SunPower compete with much larger companies like Sharp and Q-Cells? Or with the niche “technology play” firms that were springing up? How could SunPower’s current advantage be turned into an enduring competitive edge? As the sun began to rise, Werner picked up the pace again, and began jogging home. Environmental Issues One of the most important drivers of the world’s renewed interest in solar power was its ability to offer energy independence in combination with significant environmental benefits. After all, the earth received more energy from the sun than humans consumed throughout an entire year. Since the burning of fossil fuels generated a number of noxious substances including SO2, NO, NO2, and particulates, concerns for human and environmental health had driven interest in solar power from its earliest days. But evidence that rising concentrations of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere could pose large long-term environmental risks had significantly increased interest in the technology. This case was prepared by Professor Rebecca M. Henderson, Joel Conkling and Scott Roberts. Professor Henderson...
