How has fast food changed society?

MLA: Super Size Me. Dir. Morgan Spurlock. Perf. Morgan S.. Disney, 2004. DVD. Type: Documentary

Précis: Super Size Me is a 2004 American documentary film directed by and starring Morgan Spurlock. The film documents this lifestyle's drastic effect on Spurlock's physical and psychological well-being, and explores the fast food industry's corporate influence, including how it encourages poor nutrition for its own profit. Morgan was to eat at McDonald’s three times a day, and consume each item on the menu at least once for 30 days. As a result Morgan gained 24½ lbs. (11.1 kg), a 13% body mass increase, a cholesterol level of 230, and experienced mood swings, sexual dysfunction, and fat accumulation in his liver. Morgan risked his life to expose the secrets of fast food companies, and in particular McDonald’s to help educate the public.

Examination of Bias: In the documentary, multiple forms of bias were exhibited, clearly establishing an anti-fast food campaign. Had the documentary not be biased, Morgan would’ve made some kind of an effort to get a hold of information that presented both sides of the story. However, without exception every person interviewed in the documentary had said something along the lines of fast food is bad for you, that it is harmful to your health, and that it will eventually make you fat and/or obese. Maybe what he did find was actually is the truth, but it was presented in bias. The audience can tell that Morgan started from the assumption that fast food is unhealthy, and everything in the movie only proves that point. One of the examples that spoke the loudest was when he visited the school for students with behavioral problems, and cited their organic,

Anonymous Marking System

...number Instructor’s name Date Student anonymity marking system is a system used in marking of examinations or assignments whereby the identity of the student is not disclosed to the examiner. This is mainly used to ensure that the students’ performance is only based on their merit in exams. Bias in marking may occur due to various reasons. Some of the most significant reasons are race, gender and personal knowledge of the student. This system has been in practice in many universities across the world. The same principles are also being applied to coursework which forms a large part of students’ cumulative assessment. Anonymous marking is not only helpful to the students but also to the stakeholders and examiners since it prevents them from accusations of bias and bullying. Universities and institutes that use this system issue random identification codes to candidates prior to examinations or simply use the student’s number which appears in the student’s identification cards. While this policy may be time consuming, it is more preferable since it prevents possible cases of conscious or unconscious bias. And, more importantly, it creates satisfaction among students and upholds the integrity of examiners. Therefore, Universities needs to implement this system to ensure fair and honest marking practices. From a series of studies conducted in the 1990s, it was proven that bias in marking may occur due to various reasons. The main reasons were found to be knowledge of the student’s...

An in-Depth Examination of Racial Disparity from Arrest to Incarceration

...An In-Depth Examination of Racial Disparity from Arrest to Incarceration ENG 122 English Composition II Prof. Ashton Schwarz September 13, 2014 An In-Depth Examination of Racial Disparity from Arrest to Incarceration The disparate number of minorities in prison populations is a concern for many who believe this disproportion is due to a systematic bias in the judicial system. While many factors may contribute to this overwhelming discrepancy, I contend that the disparate number of minority populations in prison is an accurate portrayal of how crime is committed in the United States. In order to understand the cause of this disparity, I will delve into the arrest rates and sentencing statistics that attempt to show why minorities are incarcerated at a higher rate, and why they're incarcerated for longer periods of time, than their white counterpart. These two focal points, arrest rates and sentencing statistics, I believe, are the best for gathering data, considering it is where the justice system both begins and ends. Though many may think that there is a racial bias concerning the disparate number of minorities in prison working against minorities, an article entitled, “Are Blacks and Hispanics Disproportionately Incarcerated Relative to Their Arrests?” provides impressive data to oppose this claim. This article boasts being one of the first studies to include the Hispanic ethnicity in their data, which other studies omitted from, or never incorporated into, their...

Natural Justice

...Principles of Natural Justice Assignment Topic On Business Law Presented By Alexander T C , IInd Semester MBA Evening Batch 2010-2012 Assignment on Business Laws - Principles of Natural Justice Presented By Alexander T C MBA 2nd Semester IMK –UoK 1. Introduction :- Why Application of Principles of Natural Justice in Managerial Decisions is important? Most Managerial decisions that affect individuals and organisations are made by primary decision makers i.e. front-line administrators and managers. Only a minority of these decisions are reviewed by internal review officers, ombudsmen, courts or tribunals. The quality of administrative justice experienced by the public depends largely on primary decision makers ‘getting it right’. Central to good decision making is decision makers’ understanding of the legal and administrative framework in which decisions should be made. In turn, this depends on whether primary decision makers have adequate knowledge of that framework. While taking a decision a manager has to have the following in his mind to have his decision justified.  Procedural Fairness  Lawfulness  Evidence, Facts And Findings  Reasons  Accountability 2. Definition:Justice is of two types namely Legal Justice and Natural Justice. Legal justice refers to justice governed by the law of the state and natural Justice refers to moral justice and is governed by the Laws of Equity. Justice done to one seems not injustice to another. So the goodness of a law...

REPORT ON THE EXAMINATION – A-level Sociology – SCLY2 – June 2013 SCLY2 General Most students appeared to have sufficient time to answer all questions to the best of their ability and very few committed rubric errors such as answering questions from both sections of the paper. There were some outstandingly good answers from well-prepared students; more generally, students seem to have found the set questions accessible. However, it is worth reiterating two points made in previous examination series in relation to AO2 skills. Firstly, students continue to fall short when it comes to evaluating knowledge of sociological material. Secondly, some schools and colleges appear not to be focusing sufficiently on the importance of the skill of Application in answering the Methods in Context questions 05 and 14. Critique Essay

...person willing to see it or not. SUMMARY The author started the article by informing the reader about the current education status of the Malaysian students. The main points which were discussed in this article were about the examination and educational level in Malaysia. The author is disappointed with the education level in Malaysia. The author compared the education level with other countries too. Besides, the author mentioned about the removal of Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) which was announced recently, and replaced with school based assessment (PBS). The removal of PMR was caused by the difficulty in making sense of having students with excellent results, but still underperforming to international standards. The author made assumptions on the education level that the standard of Malaysia education is low. Lastly, the author gave suggestions on ways to overcome the inequality problem in education. The author concluded the article with hope. ANALYSIS Facts VS Opinion Author is using many facts data to support his opinion. As an example of the author taking facts to support his opinion are “Table 1: Data from Examination Syndicate shows Malaysian students primarily outperforming their previous years' cohorts in national examinations. But with sliding TIMSS results, how truthful are our tests? (Left image reproduced from Malaysia Education Blueprint)” (Nicholas Chin, 2014) and “Table 3: Malaysian school performance...

Dmd Research Proposal

...Proposal: “The effects of taking a break during physical therapy for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy” HSC 4730 Background: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) or medically known as pseudohypertrophic muscular dystrophy is a genetic, degenerative disorder found predominantly in males. It is a recessive X-linked chromosome that affects approximately 1 in 3,500 male’s worldwide.3 The boys found with Duchenne’s have an absence of the protein, dystrophin, leaving them with continuing loss of muscular function.7 Regardless of current efforts, by the age of twelve, most who suffer from DMD depend upon a wheelchair for mobility.13 The purpose of the study is to delay the progression of DMD in boys between five to ten years of age. The intervention for the study is to apply a period of rest in their physical therapy to allow for their central nervous system to process the information. The central nervous system can take between seven to fourteen days to process information in order for the body to recover.2 With the recovery time given to these patients, we can determine a successful intervention or one that further deteriorates muscle mass. The time breaks allow the central nervous system (CNS) a set period of recovery in order to determine a change in the muscular degeneration rate. Corticosteroids are a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal cortex. It can also be synthetically made and regularly prescribed to patients with DMD. Corticoid steroids, along with physical...

Education in Malaysia

...Introduction “The poor quality of Malaysia's education system is more worrying than the level of debt in its households”, said a World Bank senior economist. This indicates that the quality of Malaysia’s education system is deteriorating and the competitiveness/competency of the students is also declining. According to the result of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2012, which is a worldwide study that compares the math, reading and science skills of secondary school students, Malaysia is not only trailing behind the high income East Asian countries but also low income countries such as Vietnam. Another similar study which is the Trends in Inter-national Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) also showed that Malaysia’s result is below the international average and underperforming since 2007. Identifying the root causes is imperative in order to bring the standard of Malaysia’s education system back to the benchmark and towards achieving a high performing education system. Students’ mindset plays a significant role in learning as it influences their learning styles, motivation and performance. The mindset of Malaysian high school students is a prevalent issue and has impeded their learning in many ways. Being part of the Asian countries, it is inevitable that Malaysian students’ mindset will be shaped by Asian cultures which incline to spoon-feeding, passive and rote learning. The current mindset about learning, teaching, and education is dominated...

Observational Research

...observation of a subject in it natural setting. It involves the recording test results and not manipulating any of the variables, while being able to be broken down into three categories, naturalistic observation, participant observation, and archival research. Naturalistic observation involves the examination of a subject and its behavior in its natural environment. Participant observation involves the examination of a subject and its behavior in its natural environment as a member of the study group. Example, a test is conducted on underage drinking and the observer is a party guest where alcohol is being served. The third and final type of observational research is archival research. Archival research involves the examination of pre-existing records of a group, individual, or culture. It is mainly used to study the beliefs and norms of a specific culture. Naturalistic and participant observation methods offer many benefits if chosen, but they also have several flaws worth mentioning. The first flaw is the lack of a control. This means that no variables can be manipulated, so extra caution must be taken when concluding how events are correlated. The next issue is observer bias. This is when a scientist may have a predetermined notion about the test subject,...

Jury Trial Analysis

...trial process. Jury selection ensures that courts maintain proper Due Process and comply with constitutional guidelines. Furthermore, it gives lawyers the ability to evaluate the people in the jury and determine how they would feel about the case. The trial process branches out into six steps: jury selection, opening statements, presentation of evidence, closing arguments, charging of the jury and deliberation of jury. Throughout the process of jury selection, potential jury is based on a process names an voir dire; otherwise known as committing to telling the truth. During voir dire, potential jurors are included in the case or eliminated from the jury. Potential jurors are required to answer a series of questions concerning their personal bias regarding the case. The series of questions help determine if any of the potential jurors have had previous exposure to the context of the case, or a personal connection to the actual trial. If a lawyer can conclude based on the questioning, that the juror may be biased, they have the ability to challenge their position on the jury. Voir dire will be further examined in order to discuss how an unbiased jury is prepared for a trial. Normally twelve jurors are than selected with two being selected as alternates. Both sides of counsel (Defense and Prosecution) are given the chance to question or challenge each juror before their acceptance or rejection as potential jurors. Once chosen the jury is than given strict instructions regarding the...
