An Introduction to PMBOK Guide 5th Edition: Knowledge Areas, Processes and Process Groups
One of the most discussed tables in the Project Management Institute’s (PMI), A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, (PMBOK® Guide) Fifth Edition is the “Project Management Process Groups and Knowledge Areas Mapping” matrix, found in Table 3-1 on page 61. This table maps the 47 processes of project management to their corresponding Knowledge Area, as well as to their corresponding Process Group.
At first glance, the table seems quite complicated, so let’s break it down and uncover why a solid understanding of the relationships between processes, Process Groups, and Knowledge Areas is important to anyone preparing to take the Project Management Professional (PMP) ® exam. It’s so important, in fact, that we suggest you memorize this matrix and the relationships it calls out. Memorizing the table will prove to be a valuable asset to you during your PMP Exam.
What is a “Process” – 47 processes of project management?
Let’s start with the building blocks of the matrix - what is a process? At its most basic level, a process is simply a way of transforming an input into an output using proven tools and techniques. The PMBOK® Guide defines a process as “a set of interrelated actions and activities performed to achieve a specified set of products, results, or services.” Good processes-based on sound principles and proven practices-are extremely important for a project’s success. Processes, like a roadmap, keep the project going in the right direction; they can also help minimize confusion and uncertainty among the project manager and the project stakeholders and can help drive progress from start to finish. The PMBOK® Guide identifies 47 processes of project management that are instrumental to project success.
What is “Knowledge Areas”?

Introduction The Work Breakdown Structure is a fundamental tool of project management which is formed as an output of the process 5.3 Create WBS. It is one of the three elements of the scope baseline. Table 1.  Three Elements of the Scope Baseline | Element Name | Process | 1. | Project Scope Statement | Output of 5.3 Define Scope | 2. | WBS | Output of 5.4 Create WBS | 3. | WBS dictionary | Output of 5.4 Create WBS | The work breakdown structure can be pictured like an organizational chart, with the highest level being the project itself, and the various levels under that consisting of increasingly more detailed breakdowns of the scope of the project. For example: Although it can take the form of an organizational chart, it does not show who does the work, but simply displays the hierarchy of the various levels of decomposition of the scope. 2. Decomposition technique The techniques of decomposition means subdividing the project scope and project deliverables into smaller, more manageable components to the level of work packages. Here’s how the project is broken down through the decomposition process. Figure 1. Work Breakdown Structure Levels (from program to deliverables) a. Programs are groups of related projects. b. ...Course Project Paper Part II Salvage CSS Georgia Branden Pevear Keller Graduate School of Management PROJ 595 Willie “Alex” Hosch 11AUG15 Table of Contents Table of Contents 2 Introduction 3 Decision Tree Analysis 3 Discussion of Decision Tree 3 References 7 Introduction The expanding of the shipping waterway in Savannah, Georgia, won't be dredging up just mud, silt, and sand, it will be raising up a link to the past: an “iron-sided” ship that secured the city of Savanah during the Civil War. That was until the ship was deliberately scuttled so it would not fall into Union military hands at the end of the war. The raising and removal of the CSS Georgia is an essential federal, and state proposal that includes the increasing the channel depth to 50 feet. This increase of depth is to permit the larger cargo ships access to come into the harbor without relying on the schedule of the tides. In order for that channel depth increase, the CSS Georgia needs to be removed from its sunken position and moved to a salvagable location for furture use. U.S. Navy divers will need to take exceptional caution because of the strong likelihood that live ammunition and powder are still inside the wreckage. Risk Management Planning The program manager directing the slavage project group and the project stakeholders will, in accordance with ATOM (David Hillson, 2012), assure that the risks are recognized, and peoperly managed through the lifecycle of the salvage project....

Proj545: Risk Paper #1

...Proj545 Professor: James Jameson May 21, 2015 PROJ545: Risk Paper #1 Risk Paper   Introduction A few years ago I received some advice from my brother who at the time was a rather successful real-estate agent and previous real estate appraiser. He had built some wealth not only buy and selling houses for clients but also managed to purchase a few properties as personal investments. The advice I received was I should look at investing in real-estate. “You can look to me for guidance, I will not only make sure the property you choose makes sense on paper but I can also guide you through the renovation/remodeling process.” My family was no stranger to real-estate investment. My parents had for a long time been landlords and had purchased a few properties, renovated them churned a profit at the time of sale. After a few years of receiving continued encouragement from my family to invest, I finally made the decision to make my first big purchase. I was never a fan of taking big risks but as I watched my family succeed in real-estate and did put my mind at ease. I was not naïve of the inherent risks and I did consider obstacles that I could face and or threaten my investment. Identifying Risks After making the decision to attempt my luck at real-estate, I started to gather ideas on what potential risks I would be most affected by. My main sources of risk identification was braining storming and interviews with what were my “mentors” although they were family...

Cis517 Term Paper

...Term Paper: Project Managers and Ethics, Leadership, and Technology Jessica Tyra Dr. Russ White CIS517 May 17, 2015 The Different Organizational Structures There are three different organizational structures in regards to project management, and each has their specific pros and cons associated with their method. A functional organizational structure is one that is best when the focus is a single product. Functional structures aren’t designed to change quickly, and they are the most common type of design. These contain various specialized units that then report to top management, or the top tier of the structure. The grouping is based on similarities. It’s the top tier’s job to make sure that each individual tier below them is able to communicate and coordinate their efforts as one unit. Clustering the individuals with similar knowledge allows specialists to grow within their fields. (Griffin, 2015, p. 1) The main goal of functional structure is to place the human and informational resources in one place to maximize performance. A great example is the structure associated with a University. They have various faculty members who only teach a specific specialty or subject. These individuals are only supposed to teach their specific subject. (Schwalbe, 2013, p. 49) There are some disadvantages to functional organizational structures, with the biggest issue having to do with communication. Communication can be difficult in the decision-making...

...MGT2 - IT Project Management Course of Study This course supports the assessments for MGT2. The course covers 8 competencies and represents 3 competency units. Introduction Overview Project management is a systematic approach to solving a problem, taking advantage of an opportunity, improving a process, or otherwise creating something. A project goes through several phases, with a distinct beginning and end. A successful project includes effectively carrying out tasks related to initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling, and closing. Unsuccessful projects often skip some of these steps, perhaps not fully planning everything that needs to be done or forgetting to monitor the team to ensure they are sticking to the plan. An effective project manager foresees problems, makes appropriate trade-offs that ensure successful project completion, and, above all, facilitates communication among all project stakeholders, who are likely each looking for something different from the project. This course provides an overview of the Project Management Institute’s project management methodology. As you learn about the various process groups and knowledge areas, you will apply your knowledge in case studies for planning a project that has not started yet and monitoring/controlling a project that is already underway. You will solve problems, gather information, and make decisions using your expert judgment. The techniques you practice in this course will be beneficial...

Whilst CCC is a generally profitable and successfully functioning company, there are many internal problems that could lead to the downfall of CCC if not addressed adequately. There is a clear lack of proper leadership skills within CCC. This is evident by way of all three divisions within the corporation operating individually with no cross communication. Project management process, methodologies and governance are not practiced which leads to unclear project approval processes as well as inadequate resource and budget allocation. All divisions have their own organisational structures therefore there is lack of HR leadership. Job profiling and matching seems to be non-existent and salary grades and earning ranges are different within the three divisions although in some cases, the job description is the same.
