An Issue vs. A Problem: The Kudler Fine Foods Store
Kudler Fine Foods is a local upscale specialty food store with three locations (La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinita) located in fashionable shopping centers in the San Diego metropolitan area. The stores are stocked with the very best domestic and imported foodstuffs and divided into different departments (Kudler Intranet). It was founded by Kathy Kudler, a Marketing VP of a large contractor at the time, in 1998. As many small businesses, the operation of such an enterprise is full of day to day issues and problems that need to be resolved properly and efficiently in order to keep the operation going.
An issue is defined as “a topic of interest or discussion, an important subject requiring a decision” while a problem is defined as “something or someone that is difficult to deal with” (Collins Essential English Dictionary, 2nd Edition, 2006). As a small and growing business, Kudler Fine Foods has intrinsic issues that, if left unattended, can turn into problems at any given time.
By evaluating the Weaknesses section of the 2003 Strategic Plan of Kudler Fine Foods SWOT (Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats) analysis, a set of issues that need to be discussed can be defined. Due to the nature of the business, a one-stop place that offers the best domestic and imported food stuff, Kudler Fine Foods deals with perishable food that needs to be rotated out of the inventory (12%) on a 2 or 3 day basis in order to ensure the customer the freshest food possible. The key here is to find a way to track the movement of each of this perishable food throughout the year to be able to anticipate the amount of each food that needs to be produced or ordered to minimize that 12% of rotated out of the inventory items.
Kudler Fine Foods also has a high pay-roll cost related to specialty positions (butcher, baker, wine steward, etc.). It also has difficulties finding a qualified individual when someone quits or a new store is opened. This highlight the lack of a cross training program that will allow Kudler Fine Foods to have backups for each of the specialty positions to keep the operation uninterrupted in the case of an opening or if someone quits while finding a substitute.
The operation of the Del Mar store is not going as expected since the town is too small to support the store. This issue has already been evaluated by Kudler Fine Foods and plan has been delineated. A fourth store will be opened at Carlsbad and will absorb the Del Mar operations when the local rental agreement ends.
Probably the biggest issue the Kudler Fine Foods has is that Kathy Kudler is the person in charge of the major business issues, such as finance, purchasing and inventory tracking, among others. This situation places the company in a very fragile position. If Kathy is unable to be present at the stores, due to a sickness, disability or just because she is on vacation, no one is capable of performing her duties and/or fulfilling her responsibilities, which will jeopardize the business. This issue should be addressed as soon as possible. Kudler Fine Foods is already planning to install an electronic system that will allow them to track the ordering of items and are evaluating the possibility of hiring someone to help with the purchasing and the inventory.
Issues are part of the daily operations of any given business, regardless of its size. The important thing to do is to acknowledge, evaluate and discuss them, establish a plan to correct them and take control over them to avoid bigger problems that can impact the overall operation of the business. ...- NTC/362 Ronald Bowell October 26, 2015 Page Break Kudler Fine Foods is a purveyor of specialty and gourmet foods in the San Diego, CA. area. They currently have three locations: the home office in La Jolla, CA., and two store locations in Del Mar, CA. and Encinitas, CA. Kudler is in need of a new network design and topology that will address multiple issues faced in a growing enterprise. The new network must incorporate a new network topology to reduce downtime and ensure that functionality will remain if one or two devices are down. In addition, a VoIP system must be installed over the network, along with an internal WLAN in each store. The WAN will tie all three stores together to increase collaboration and network file sharing, and the new network must be easily scalable to support growth of the company and integration of future stores. Of utmost priority is the security of the network. The sensitive nature of credit card processing makes Kudler Fine Foods a prime victim for cyber threats, and therefore policies must be put in place to protect the customer and employee data. Network Characteristics and Components The current network characteristics and components for the Del Mar store starts with a small office scenario that is accompanied by six Dell Vostro computers for management. All six computers are running Windows 7 and all have an 802.11n for connectivity. This store has a total of three Point Of Sale (POS) terminals and a POS server to...

Automated Process of an Ais

...of AIS Kudler Fine Foods is a company that is looking to expand and integrate their accounting software. Accuracy and the ability to have all locations communicate are essential in the decisions of the direction the company. Software that caters to the majority needs of the company will facilitate the recording process and increase the accuracy of such action. There are several types of accounting information systems the company could use. Each type has their advantages and disadvantages on the development and usage of the software. The company has many issues to consider in deciding which type of software to use. The main goal of the upgrade in the software is to increase profitability, efficiency, and structure. Rationale and Analysis for Industry Specific-Software Custom software is more expensive in comparison to industry-specific software. Weighing in the cost factor in choosing software to use is one aspect to consider but one should not just use cost as the only deciding factor. The industry-specific software offers a solution right out of the box. The competitor is most likely using industry-specific software so that means the industry software available has already had the bugs and issues fixed once it is received. “If you have a common business, like a restaurant, there are generally canned software solutions available that are already proven to be effective for your organization’s purpose” (Cohn, 2014, para. 11). The availability of having problem free software...

Network Design

...Inmon Kudler Fine Foods (KFF) is a small specialized company that deals in fine foods, wines and other related items for the discerning customer. Presently the company uses a dedicated T3 line to connect their La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas stores together with La Jolla being the site for the central server. The company incorporates a Bus Topology for a three locations. Bus networks use a common backbone to connect all devices. This is done with a single cable (backbone) that functions as a common communication link that all devices either tap into or attach to individually. Below is an example of a Bus Topology. Ethernet bus topology is considered the easiest to install and maintain because of its simplicity. Kudler uses a 100Base ThickNet cable for its backbone. The Bus Topology is very effective when connecting fewer than 15 components at a time. This is an ideal set-up for the company because all three locations have less than 15 connections per site. Each location has the same configurations which consist of six computers, one Point of Sales (POS) server, POS terminals, blade server (for all communications, e-mail, storage and Web), one printer, six Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phones and an APC Smart Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS). The biggest downside to this system is that if anything happens to the backbone cable the entire system goes down. The plan for Kudler is to incorporate a network that will be expandable in the future from the three stores that...

Quality Management

...Task 1 Introduction Kudler Fine Foods (KFF) has excellent reputation for providing fine-quality, unique and gourmet grocery in the San Diego metropolitan area, and its recent value-added programs, such as to include organic produce from a local grower to its product selection and expanded customer service by offering catering food service, have increase tremendous assessment to the company. However, in order to maintain its competitive edge in the fine food grocery industry, KFF must assess the business opportunities that are created by the change in technology, and KFF must also identify the generic strategies that it is pursuing and tactics that would make these strategies a realization. Finally, KFF must constantly scan the internal and external environments of the industry in order to stay innovative. This paper intends to analyze KFF’s management to help KFF maintain its status as supplier of distinctive gourmet products and services. Quality Quality is often defined as 'fitness for purpose'. In other words a quality product is one that meets the needs and requirements of its consumer. In his widely acclaimed book, Thriving on Chaos, Tom Peters argued that consumers' perception of the quality of a product or service is the most important factor in determining its success. Quality as defined by the consumer, he argued, is more important than price in determining demand for most goods and services. Consumers will be prepared to pay for the best quality. Value is thus...
