In Chapter 54 of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the author, Betty Smith, introduces us to Francie’s first love and first heartbreak in the course of two chapters. After helping an engaged man named Lee around New York and being called his “best girl”, Francie is swept off her feet. However, she is soon met with agony and pain when she is sent a letter from Lee’s wife. Her first response is to call to her mother, Katie.
