Should We Stop Panicking About Bullying?
In the article “Stop Panicking About Bullies,” from The Wall Street Journal, Nick Gillespie argues that bullying is not a big issue in our society. Gillespie says,” But is America really in the midst of a ‘bullying crisis,’ as so many now claim? I don't see it”. This paper will analyze Gillespie’s point of view along with its credibility.
Nick Gillespie is editor-in-chief for reason magazine. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Slate, Salon, and many other publications. Gillespie has written many pieces but his most controversial article is called “Stop Panicking …show more content…
The author mentions that “NCES changed the way it tabulated bullying incidents in 2005 and cautions against using earlier data. Its biennial reports find that 28% of students ages 12-18 reported being bullied in 2005; that percentage rose to 32% in 2007, before dropping back to 28% in 2009” The Research he shows indicates that the number of people bullied has gone down but According to an article published by New York Times called “Parents often unaware of bullying” by Tara Parker-pope “Research indicates that as many as 75 percent of teens have been bullied online, but only one in 10 have reported the problem to parents or other adults…” This is true about many people because they are afraid if they report the bullying parents will limit their internet use and social activities. A similar fear can cause a child to not report being bullied in school. This research indicates that Gillespie’s research is incomplete because he is disregarding cyberbullying and the people who are afraid to report …show more content…
In surveying the effects of the law, the Star-Ledger reports that while it is ‘widely used and has helped some kids,’ it has imposed costs of up to $80,000 per school district for training alone and uses about 200 hours per month of staff time in each district, with some educators saying that the additional effort is taking staff away from things such as substance-abuse prevention and college and career counseling.” The interview indicates that the anti-bullying laws were well intentioned but they are taking focus away from many other major problems in schools like drug abuse and career counseling which is more important for the future of these

... Prologue  The sun is about to set. That fuzzy and pitch-black place with a nostalgic hymn of the approaching dying twilight is already filled with his desire to wake up from his endless nightmare. Holding a golden ring on his right hand, he is calmly watching over the horizon as he tries to feel better, but he cannot for he is still caged within the memories of the wicked past and within the present catastrophe. He gradually leaned his back to that mango tree where their chained names are carved inside a heart. For the past 99 days, it has been his desperate habit to wait there for the coming of that person whom he knows will never arrive. Then liquids of emotions flowed out of his vision as his heart drowns with it. Nothing can comfort him since when that peak of joy bounced him out and turned him to be a man he is now. He was never insane yet he doesn’t already know of whom he is and even the people around him; he is just hopeless and unable to keep step of what happened for the past year. Grief and fear never left him and continued to slaved him and took control over his moral and physical character which paved him to be a ‘hard to decipher person’. However, he still lives for he has still an inch of dignity despite of great loneliness. Moreover, his heart is still shouting aloud saying, “I will never leave you..”  Chapter I  It’s Saturday. Lesther is very excited for he will be seeing his long-time girlfriend again to celebrate their 4th year anniversary. Of...

...meaningful will be the series of choices you have made. In the end, we are our choices. —Jeff Bezos, commencement speech at Princeton University, May 30, 2010 Prologue In the early 1970s, an industrious advertising executive named Julie Ray became fascinated with an unconventional public-school program for gifted children in Houston, Texas. Her son was among the first students enrolled in what would later be called the Vanguard program, which stoked creativity and independence in its students and nurtured expansive, outside-the-box thinking. Ray grew so enamored with the curriculum and the community of enthusiastic teachers and parents that she set out to research similar schools around the state with an eye toward writing a book about Texas’s fledgling gifted-education movement. A few years later, after her son had moved on to junior high, Ray returned to tour the program, nestled in a wing of River Oaks Elementary School, west of downtown Houston. The school’s principal chose a student to accompany her on the visit, an articulate, sandy-haired sixth-grader whose parents asked only that his real name not be used in print....
