Save as many as you ruin

To live is to choose. We all create our lives through decisions, and sometimes, our decisions leave footprints in other people’s lives, too. Making a choice every now and then is difficult but necessary because it makes us who we are, and sometimes we make a wrong choice that can seem both irreversible and fatal to your life. If you are lucky, you will one day have the opportunity to save what you have previously ruined because of wrong choices. This is an opportunity that Gerard will not take for granted in the short story ‘Save as Many as You Ruin’, which is written by Simon Van Booy in 2007. This paper will primarily focus on the use of symbols in the story, the mood of the story and the use of contrasts throughout the story.
In the story, we meet our protagonist, Gerard, who is a very handsome man from New York. Gerard lives a quite boring and regrettable life, and even though he has slept with many women in his life, his only true love is a woman named Laurel. They met at a dinner party and started falling in love with each other from the very first sight. Unfortunately, Gerard wanted more than love.
“Gerard vaguely remembers the feeling of being in love with Laurel and the desire to have sex with Issy”
He had an urge to have sex with plenty of women and his desire to have sex overpowered his love for Lucy. He began having an affair with a woman named Issy, and managed to keep it a secret to Laurel until Issy became pregnant, and therefore, he decided to tell Laurel. She broke it off with him and he moved in with Issy who gave birth to a girl, Lucy. Issy left them both six months later to fulfill her dreams in Hollywood and four years later she was found dead in a pool, possibly after a suicide as she had written Gerard’s name as her next of kin.
After all these wrong choices, the only light in Gerard’s life is his daughter,

Save as Many as You Ruin

...Save as many as you ruin The text “Save as many as you ruin”, is written by Simon Van Booy. The main character of this short story is called Gerard, and he is about 40 years old. In my analysis of this story I will in some parts go through some parts of the story to find the red line. I am also going to comment on some of the themes, how the language is used, and how the mood is. In the beginning of the short story, we are told that Gerard is on his way home from his work. As he walks home, his surroundings are described. It getting darker outside, which makes the streetlights turn on. It is winter and there is snow in the streets, which he mentions as he is walking. Through “Save as many as you ruin” the surroundings are described a lot, mostly the nature, which seems like telling us about his emotions, which we see as well in the following quote: “Gerard thinks of everyone’s footprints in the show. Manhattan was once a forest. He imagines the footprints of an Indian slipping home, on his shoulders a warm carcass with clumps of snow stuck to its fur”. The story’s narrator works a bit like a limited pointed narrator, but as well the narrator is omniscient. Back to the footprints; Gerard thinks of if there is anything special or good to remember him of, or if he is just like the footprints, which are just disappearing and being forgotten. The first part we see a pretty depressing mode from Gerard, but this is before he meets Laurel, when he walks alone in the snow. In this...

Dolls House Anaylsis

...Character Analysis In A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen there is a controversial argument about whether or not Nora Helmer the main character is a hero or not. Throughout the play Nora carries out certain acts of behavior that wouldn’t be considered heroic on the surface but underneath they would. Throughout the play Nora is treated like Torvald’s pet or property not his wife, he looks at her as nothing more than a belonging. Nora is the “doll” wife of Torvald meaning she is just playing a roll and has no say. Little does he know she is actually caring, independent, and brave not just a pet. In the first act when the audience is first introduced to Nora you get the illusion that she is a perfect wife and the only problem she has is spending her husband’s money by shopping a lot. By giving the image of her being a perfect wife it is comparing her to a doll, because dolls have no flaws. As Nora and Torvalds dialogue proceeds you get the sense that Nora is viewed as a pet to Torvald. He calls her pet names such as “his little lark”, “squirrel”, “spendthrift”, and “sweet tooth” (Ibsen 1281-1283). In Torvalds eyes Nora is not viewed as his equal but his property. By Torvald talking to Nora like this he is degrading her. Also in the first act it is revealed that Nora has made some arrangements to keep the household afloat without informing Torvald. Nora lied to her husband not because she wanted to but because she had too. Torvald is a typical man of the 1800th century. Men during...

Cloning

...The first thing that usually pops into someone’s mind when they hear the word cloning is a human replication such as the army of clones in the movie Star Wars. What most people don't know is that there is so much more to cloning than creating a living being identical to the original. There are multiple ways to utilize the technology of cloning whether they be beneficial or not. Cloning is a good idea as long as it upholds life and is not allowed to limit the diversity of genetic traits. Cloning is “the asexual production of an exact copy of an original” (“What is cloning”). It is from one parent and results in identical cells. Scientifically speaking, one cell could be cloned, as well as organs, plants, even animals and perhaps humans. Just as varied, are the reasons to clone in the first place. The possibilities of cloning range from medical uses, personal uses, agricultural and livestock improvement to saving endangered species and more. The medical advantages cloning provides extend life, treat illnesses, and produce medications. Research into cell growth and genetics adds understanding into diseases such as cancer and how to avoid hereditary defects. In addition, cloning can improve food sources whether crops or livestock. Cloning also takes part in choosing desirable traits for people, animals, and plant, crops. Once they genetically engineer the plants, they can clone those seeds so that they have multiple identical copies of that same plant. Same with animals or livestock...

Lawrence Langer's Holocaust Testimonies: The Ruin Loneliness

...I remember after Liberation, I suffered probably more from loneliness and the isolation, more than during the Holocaust period…I suppose it has to do with the fact that after, the life around you seems to be normal but you are abnormal. Well, why?...In concentration camps and labor camps, there was a preoccupation with survival…But then after what was called-actually, the realization of liberation was not vivid to me, was not real with me for a long time, but I remember during the years ’45, ’46, ’47, and even up to ’48, I would find myself crying, and quite frequently…[experiencing] a feeling of “Yes, I’m alive, but that’s it, the rest doesn’t matter” (Langer 23). This is arguable the most dangerous symptom of the concentration camp syndrome because sleep disturbance, anxiety, and feelings of guilt are all symptoms that with time and the proper attention can all be managed and possibly overcome, but loneliness is a feeling that consumes you and eventually if your loneliness can’t be filled up by something, it can be...

Unit 2- Business Resources-M3 and D2

...M3 Smallwood LTD should always be aware of any issues to do with their financial state. By looking through their profit & loss and balance sheets, there are a few issues that have been noticed. Firstly, the cost of sales jumped by £43,000 from £307,000 in 2005 to £350,000 in 2006. However, in 2007 this number did decrease by £20,000 to £330,000. This is an issue because in 2006 and 2007 it was costing Smallwood a lot more money to get things such as materials from making and selling a product. Smallwood’s net profit in 2005 was £22,000 but this decreased by £2,000 to £20,000 in 2006. The net profit then increased in 2007 by £4,000 to £24,000. This is an issue because the net profit should be larger than the total expenditure, which is the amount of money available to spend. Connected to this is the net profit % which in 2005 was at 3.2% of revenue which gets distributed to investors or to the company. However, in 2006 this % dropped to 2.8% and then increased again in 2007 to 3.6%. The issue with this is that in 2006 there was less money to distribute to investors or within the company but in 2007 there was more than there has been in 2005 and 2006 to distribute out. Smallwood’s interest in 2005 was £46,000 and then this went up by £8,000 in 2006 to £54,000. In 2007 this number increased again by £7,000 to £61,000. This is an issue because Smallwood are paying more interest each year which looks bad on the company. This could be because they are behind on loan repayment...

...location they chose was cool. Give your feedback relative to the skill set of the writer. Never lie or obfuscate. Just serve it up gently. An upset writer isn’t going to hear your points anyway. But an encouraged one will. Trust me on this. — Julie Gray PRINTER FRIENDLY PAGE  Literary analysis looks critically at a work of fiction in order to understand how the parts contribute to the whole. When analyzing a novel or short story, you’ll need to consider elements such as the context, setting, characters, plot, literary devices, and themes. Remember that a literary analysis isn’t merely a summary or review, but rather an interpretation of the work and an argument about it based on the text. Depending on your assignment, you might argue about the work’s meaning or why it causes certain reader reactions. This handout will help you analyze a short story or novel—use it to form a thesis, or argument, for your essay. Summary Begin by summarizing the basic plot: “Matilda by Roald Dahl is about a gifted little girl in small town America who learns to make things move with her mind and saves her teacher and school from the evil principal.” This will help ground you in the story. (When you write your paper, you probably won’t include a summary because your readers will already be familiar with the work. But if they aren’t, use a brief summary to orient them.) Context Research the author’s background and other work. This can give insight into the author’s perspective and bias, as well as...

They are from two very different families who are bitter rivals, the Capulets and the Montagues. Romeo and Juliet are to blame for all the misfortune experienced in this book, due to the impatience and stubbornness of each; Shakespeare created this to show how important patience is during crucial events. Because of their impatience, their marriage is torn apart, and both end up dead as the play comes to a close. Pilgrimage of Grace Dbq

...Pilgrimage of Grace Document Analysis Desiring marriage to his mistress Anne Boleyn, and a subsequent male heir to the throne, King Henry VIII of England stood before the pope with a plea. He wanted to divorce his then wife Catherine of Aragon, who he had come to despise for failing to produce a male heir, and instead marry Anne. However, this request was met with adamant refusal by the pope, who deemed the divorce unholy as it was against the Catholic faith. Upon hearing that his request was denied, Henry became livid and, in with the Act of Supremacy, ordained himself the head of the Anglican Church. He then proceeded to divorce Catherine and take Anne as his new bride. But Henry’s actions against the Catholic Church did not stop there. Enlisting the aid of Thomas Cromwell, he proceeded to implement high taxes, expand royal power, dissolve monasteries, and confiscate Catholic Church lands. Many English citizens took offence to these measures, and as a response embarked on the Pilgrimage of Grace. Although the protestors claimed that the march was solely to preserve English Catholicism, there were many different reasons for it. Some aimed to return God’s supremacy in England, others wanted protection from marauding thieves and Scots, and many wanted better treatment for the poor. The King and his fellow Protestants, on the other hand, saw the march as a rebellion, and set out to crush it. They argued that this opposition to the king’s power would bring chaos and anarchy to all...

Stem Cell Research

...Playing with life, Playing with rules? Have you or someone that you’ve known, maybe someone dear to you, ever lost a limb? Then you may have heard of stem cell research. Embryonic stem cells have the amazing ability to theoretically grow back any body part. They have the potential to morph into any of the 220 cell types found in the body (Robinson 1). It has the restoration power capable of reestablishing functions of the body as well, such as eyesight. The drawback to stem cell research is that it requires baby fetuses to acquire the material. Stem cells differ from other cells in the body, as they are capable of dividing and rebuilding themselves for long durations of time. This is unlike muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells. They are not able to replicate themselves, while stem cells can do it many times. This means that if stem cells are kept in a laboratory over a long period of time, they can yield many other stem cells. Another property of stem cells is that they are unspecialized, meaning that they do not help with anything in the body. For example, they are not able to help the heart pump blood in the body. However, stem cells can become heart muscle cells and blood cells, which could do that function. A third property of stem cells is that they become specialized cells. This is called differentiation, when the stem cell morphs into a cell that will have a specific function in the body (Robinson 1). In the last five years, China has increased its research funding...

Dna Role in Forensicsscience

...DNA Role in Forensics Science At a crime scene there may be a lot DNA evidence left behind or none. DNA can identify victims and suspects. It can help solve cold case and give new leads to other cases. DNA is also use to determine kinship in a missing person case. It can also help exonerate someone from a crime that they were convicted of. When handling DNA such as blood at a crime scene it is important that it is properly documented, photographed, collected and stored. Besides blood, DNA can include: body fluid, hair and skin. Such DNA can be matched to an individual. DNA is the acronym for Deoxyribonucleic acid. According to Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology, “The word nucleic is referring to “DNA location in the nuclei of eukaryotic cell.” (Page49). “DNA is genetic material that humans and other organisms inherit from their parents which consists of gain molecules” (Page 48). The shape of DNA is a double helix. Some would say it looks like a twisted ladder. “The double helix has four bases; (A) Adenine, (C) Cytosine, (G) Guanine and (T) Tyhmine. The bases have to be properly linked to their pair or else there will be a mutation in the gene. The following are the base pairs that bind:”Adenine with Tyhmine and Cystosine with Guanine” (Page 49). DNA testing began in the mid 1980’s. In the online article, DNA Factors states: Ever since the start of DNA testing in 1985, biological material has been a reliable physical evidence to help solve crimes (Williams)...
