Often, novels are used to convey a deeper political or moral meaning. Many times a novel’s characters are used to cover up the controversial topics that the author discusses. The characters, in “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, symbolize many political events that took place in Golding’s life. Three character’s personality in particular, Jack's savage instinct, Ralph's ability to call people to order, and Piggy's intelligence, held deeper meaning. The theme of Lord of the Flies can be described as the flaws of society are directly transversal to the flaws of human nature.
Jack is described by Golding as "tall, thin, and bony; and his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Out of this face stared two light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to …show more content…
Ralph is always trying to get things done that are important to survival, and he never bosses people around. He is the genuine one that tells people what to do according to what needs to be done, without being bossy. Ralph, the name itself means “Wolf council” which would make sense because he was voted leader on the island. Ralph has fair hair and is very tall and thin. Jack is the only other character who is close in physical stature to Ralph. This is convenient since these characters represent two competing ideas of life on the island. Golding uses Ralph do represent the perfect human, someone who does good but isn’t so ahead of everyone that he can’t relate to normal human temptations. This is the Ralph at the opening of “Lord of the Flies”. Later, however, Ralph grows distant from Piggy, the good side, and grows closer to Jack, the anarchical side of human
