Analyzing Lust, Caution

In the Middle of Nowhere Lust, Caution directed by Ang Lee has been recognized as a sensational film with a high degree of sexuality. However, a solid plot of the film has captivated spectators who was initially allured by a rumor that the film contains numerous sexual scenes. In addition to the solidity, the movie includes an esoteric ideology and a complicated psychology of two protagonists. Therefore, appreciating the movie once may not able us to catch messages that Ang Lee conveys. After watching the film several times, concentrating on the narrative and formal elements that build themes of the film, I could finally recognize some of purposeful messages that Lee hopes us to catch. In the sequence (2:21:38~2:25:30), a scene right after Mr. Yee madly runs to his car when Wang Chia-chi tearfully murmurs to Mr. Yee to escape, a professional combination of formal elements, especially mise-en-scene and cinematography, effectively builds two themes in Lust, Caution - a destined life of one woman and her sacrifice. The sequence begins with a long shot of Wang Chia-chi exiting Chandni Chowk Jewellers by explicitly displaying her anxiousness. The camera track shots Wang Chia-chi as she cannot find an empty rickshaw. Looking around restlessly with an uneasy look, slightly withered and stumbling body, and even wandering fingertips are recorded intact. The reason of this uneasiness if because she has finally broke the frame of the play she has played in and has faced the reality. According to previous scenes, we see Wang Chia-chi is passionate in acting. She has dedicated herself so much in the play that she recognizes herself as a whore. However, she is no longer in the play and her lover has left her. Would not a person whose goal has been totally vanished look similar to Wang Chia Chi? Lee thoroughly plots out and catches every little detail to portray shaky figure of an abandoned woman. Second shot focuses on Wang Chia-chi’s reflection on display windows and mannequins inside stores, each representing Wang Chia-chi in the reality and Wang Chia-chi in the play. The shot begins with a medium shot of a mannequin placed inside a store, and Wang Chia-chi walks to it. Her eyes looking at the mannequin is reflected on the show-window. She keeps walking, looks at another mannequin in another store, walks again, and she sees another mannequin. The repeated camera movement from the mannequins to the show-windows is to emphasize Wang Chia-chi as a fabricated identity acting in a play of assassinating Mr. Yee. In other words, the mannequin represents her schemed appearance, not her true identity, and the show-window indicates the boundary of the play and the reality. Previously in the film, Wang Chia-chi always looks outside through a window. However, she finally looks into the windows from outside which means she has finally shattered the boundary of window, stepped out from the play, and faced the reality. While Wang Chia-chi stares at the window of the last store, she sees an empty rickshaw and shouts, “Taxi!” She gets on the taxi, fiddles with her skirt, and wonderingly looks around. Here, once again, swish pan shot and her acting demonstrate her feeling of insecurity and effort of pretending to remain calm. The most important scene in the sequence, a shot of both the diamond ring and the drug on Wang Chia-chi’s hand, senses her destined death. This scene follows after several shot/reverse-shots of Wang Chia-chi and the rickshaw. As the road gets blocked and the rickshaw driver tell her that it will be a long wait, Wang Chia-chi’s slight smile is extremely closed up. Then the camera moves down to her neck. Her hand wearing the dazzling diamond ring plucks out the drug that Old Wu gave her in the beginning of the mission. When Wang Chia-chi first meets Old Wu, she memorizes everything Old Wu said within a few seconds. She is extremely brilliant that Wang Chia-chi foresees her death when Old Wu tells her that previously trained agents got killed as Mr. Yee sniffed them out. She combines pieces of future that even after she successfully carries out this mission; she will be put into another risky mission and will eventually die. However, knowing her destiny, it is so painful to see Mr. Yee, who she dearly loves, die as well. A string of inner conflicts whether to assassinate Mr. Yee or forgo the plan continues until Wang Chia-chi receives the diamond ring. The diamond ring that reflects 100% pure love of Mr. Yee towards Wang Chia-chi, leads Wang Chia-chi to make a final decision- sacrifice her life for Mr. Yee. Facing her foreseeable destiny in either case, Wang Chia-chi chooses the ring over the drug. The last scene of Wang Chia-chi slowly raising her eyes and flashbacking to the beginning of this corruptive play illustrates her deep-rooted rancor against her colleagues. The reminiscence of her innocent appearance back then, contrasting to her appearance now, shows how miserably Wang Chia-chi’s life has changed. She implicitly resents her fellows who cowardly hide behind and try to achieve the great work by dragging her down to the very bottom. At the end of the movie when Wang Chia-chi and her colleagues get executed, we know that she did not take the drug in the last scene of the sequence. Would not it be Wang Chia-chi’s little revenge of not swallowing the drug but sharing the moment of death with her friends? The film somberly and sorrowfully portrays the hopeless love of Mr. Yee and Wang Chia-chi who cautiously but passionately love each other on the edge of the boundary. In the specified sequence, Lee’s intended themes are hair-raisingly expressed through the use of mise-en-scene and cinematography. Especially, emphasis on symbols such as the mannequins, show-windows, diamond ring and drug trigger us to rethink about the meanings of each. Through the professional combination of formal elements in the sequence, Wang Chia-chi’s tragically destined life and the sacrifice for her love is heart-strikingly put into the screen.

...Relationship Between Husband and Wife Abstract: When the two entities are able to deliver their thoughts and feelings it helps each one of them to understand and know one another. This would also help one of them to view the world from the viewpoint of the other. The pattern and frequency of communication change according to several factors especially time and familiarity. Yet, effort towards an effective communication should be present in both the entities involved in the relationship. In this particular case of study these entities are the husband and the wife. The purpose here is to show how the communication between husband and wife helps in shaping their relationship and deciding the direction and outcome of family systems and decision-making. While studying the family structures, we have considered mainly a couple and one child framework (that is a triangle structure) for most of the analysis. At the same time, the paper also involves in studying the different factors, which affect such communication, and how these may influence the entire family orientation and structure. Introduction Communication refers to the exchange of ideas and information among two or more organisms via certain medium or means. Communication may occur with the help of words or through signs and gestures. The idea is to share some message and communication is effective when the message is shared successfully or the thoughts can be transferred to the concerned entity. Communication has...

...ADVERTISING'S FIFTEEN JIB FOWLES* BASIC APPEALS Emotional Appeals THE NATURE OF EFFECTIVE advertisements was recognized full well by the late media philosopher Marshall McLuhan . In his Understanding Media, the first sentence of the section on advertising reads, "The continuous pressure is to create ads more and more in the image of audience motives and desires ." By giving form to people's deep-lying desires, and picturing states of being that individuals privately yearn for, advertisers have the best chance of arresting attention and affecting communication . And that is the immediate goal of advertising : to tug at our psychological shirt sleeves and slow us down long enough for a word or two about whatever is being sold . We glance at a picture of a solitary rancher at work, and "Marlboro" slips into our minds . Advertisers (I'm using the term as a shorthand for both the products' manufacturers, who bring the ambition and money to the process, and the advertising agencies, who supply the know-how) are ever more compelled to invoke consumers' drives and longings ; this is the "continuous pressure" McLuhan refers to . Over the past century, the American marketplace has grown increasingly congested as more and more products have entered into the frenzied competition after the public's dollars. The economies of other nations are quieter than ours since the volume of goods being hawked does not so greatly exceed demand . In some economies, consumer wares...

...Home > Why Hamlet Delays His Revenge Why Hamlet Delays His Revenge (Excerpt from Quintessence of Dust: The Mystical Meaning of Hamlet) Kenneth Chan ... Hamlet is finally alone, and the stage is set for the soliloquy that gave rise to one of the most persistent mysteries in literature: Why does Hamlet delay his revenge? Hamlet Ay, so, God buy you. Now I am alone. Oh, what a rogue and peasant slave am I! Is it not monstrous that this player here, But in a fiction, in a dream of passion, Could force his soul so to his whole conceit1 That from her working all his visage wanned, Tears in his eyes, distraction in his aspect, A broken voice, and his whole function suiting With forms to his conceit? And all for nothing! For Hecuba! What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba, That he should weep for her? What would he do Had he the motive and the cue for passion That I have? He would drown the stage with tears, And cleave the general ear with horrid speech, Make mad the guilty and appal the free,2 Confound the ignorant, and amaze indeed The very faculties of eyes and ears. Yet I, A dull and muddy-mettled3 rascal, peak Like John-a-dreams,4 unpregnant5 of my cause, And can say nothing--no, not for a king, Upon whose property and most dear life A damned defeat was made. Am I a coward? Who calls me a villain, breaks my pate across, Plucks off my beard and blows it in my face, Tweaks me by the nose, gives me the lie i'th'throat As deep as to the lungs? Literary Theory

...Literary Theory and Schools of Criticism Introduction A very basic way of thinking about literary theory is that these ideas act as different lenses critics use to view and talk about art, literature, and even culture. These different lenses allow critics to consider works of art based on certain assumptions within that school of theory. The different lenses also allow critics to focus on particular aspects of a work they consider important. For example, if a critic is working with certain Marxist theories, s/he might focus on how the characters in a story interact based on their economic situation. If a critic is working with post-colonial theories, s/he might consider the same story but look at how characters from colonial powers (Britain, France, and even America) treat characters from, say, Africa or the Caribbean. Hopefully, after reading through and working with the resources in this area of the OWL, literary theory will become a little easier to understand and use. Disclaimer Please note that the schools of literary criticism and their explanations included here are by no means the only ways of distinguishing these separate areas of theory. Indeed, many critics use tools from two or more schools in their work. Some would define differently or greatly expand the (very) general statements given here. Our explanations are meant only as starting places for your own investigation into literary theory. We encourage you to use the list of scholars and works provided for each...

Religion and Ethics in Our Modern Society

...Notes for the Course: Religion and Ethics in our Modern Society, 2012 By Dr H Ndlovu Definition and Nature of Christian Ethics Ethics is derived from the Greek word “ethos” that is also comes from another word “ethika.” Ethika means norms, conventions, values, customs the society. Thus ethics is a discipline that examines one’s moral standards or the moral of a society. These are absorbed from family, church and friends. Why Study Ethics There are nine reasons why human beings have to study ethics. 1. Human beings are capable of reasoning from cause to effect with the understanding that everything done has effect. 2. Human beings are capable of making choices after comparing the alternatives, that is, internal and external. People have two cells namely: a. Real – what we have now b. Ideal – what we are aiming at 3. Human beings are self – conscious. This means we can study ourselves by being a subject and be the object at the same time. 4. Human beings are finite or limited not knowing what will happen from the next moment or next door. Thus, we must have principles to apply when situations comes. 5. Human life is an active dynamic phenomenon – We do something as if we do nothing. 6. People also can be taught to be good (Isaiah 1 :18) 7. Human beings are capable of filing an obligation 8. Human beings are also capable of understanding what moral terms like freedom, dignity and so on affects other people. 9. Finally, human beings need to survive. Human civilization...

Ethics

...CHAPTER 1 WHAT IS ETHICS?* Stories about “unethical” behavior in business abound. The recent scandals permeating the financial services, savings and loan, and other industries have caused a growing concern about ethics in the workplace. Success often appears to be measured in only dollars. The claim that “greed is good” seems to reflect the behavior of many people in our society. Indeed, the desire to possess more and more seems pervasive—and business, like other institutions, reflects the values, beliefs, and personal goals of our society. Time, Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal, and countless other magazines and newspapers have called attention to unethical practices, bemoaning the “sleaze, scandals, and hypocrisy”1 undermining our moral bearings. In short, there is a great deal of concern about ethics in general, and business ethics in particular. This reading will examine what ethics is and how people decide what is “right” and “wrong.” The word ethics has a number of meanings. Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary gives several definitions of ethics, including: ● the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation ● a set of moral principles or values ● a theory or system of moral values 2 ● the principles of conduct governing an individual or a group. Ethics, in all of these definitions, is concerned with right or wrong behavior. This reading focuses on the discipline or study of ethics. 1. THE DISCIPLINE OF ETHICS This discipline...

Patanjali Yoga Sutra

...The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Introduction, Commentaries, and Translation What are the Yoga Sutras and who is Patanjali? Over fifty different English translations of the Yoga Sutras are extant, standing as a human testament to how Universal Truth is celebrated in terms of a rich diversity. Rather than the common and external type of knowledge (emanating from book knowledge), the following translation and commentary are a result of an intimate familiarity and direct experience both with an authentic yogic tradition and with western culture, psychology, and language that has been refined, tested in fire, and integrated for over thirty five years of intense practice (sadhana). This work is dedicated toward revealing the universal message of authentic yoga that the sage, Patanjali, first wrote down approximately 2000 years ago. Patanjali is not the inventor of yoga, but rather yoga's most popularly known scribe. What has become known simply as the "Yoga Sutras" (sutra means thread) or almost equally as common, as the "Yoga Darshana" (the vision of Yoga), is actually a compendium of an ancient pre-existing oral yoga tradition consisting of both practical advice and theoretical context. The most accepted format of the Yoga Sutras consists of four chapters (called padas) written in the Sanskrit language approximately 2000 years ago in Northern India while utilizing the terminology of the time, i.e., Samkhya philosophical trappings. The dates ascribed to the Yoga Sutras...
