Andromache Mourning Hector – 1783 Semiotics has an idea of deconstructing artwork to explain why the art historian is wrong on their methodology of a piece. Deconstructing will take different points of view to create this new idea, and it can never be a wrong answer. When an art piece is being deconstructed it needs to have support to help prove the point, and a way to help prove that, is to peel the layers away from the art piece. Throughout this paper, I will be peeling away Jacques Louis David’s painting called Andromache Mourning Hector. The art historians say the women in the painting is names Andromache, and she was married to Hector, who died in a battle to save his people. They say Andromache’s face is shows pain and her hand is laying opened on her husband’s side asking why did this have to happen to him. It might seem like a colorful piece of Jesus being crucified onto the cross but there is more to it. I would like to take a better look at the colors that Nolde used to deconstruct the art piece because art historians believe a different theory about what the color represents than what I believe the color represents in this painting. I will walk through why I think it is representing something else and create support in my answer for this thought throughout this essay. Art historians do a lot of research on why artist did what they do in their paintings. In Nolde’s painting called the Crucifixion, they believe the background colors are representing the blood of the three crucified men that are hanging from the cross. One reason why they might say that is because in the Bible, Jesus is the body and blood of bread and wine. Also, he sacrificed his life for his people, and it was a horrid, bloody event.
