The Angel on My Shoulder

My grandmother was a truly amazing person. She was compassionate, a great cook and the most loving person I know, and without any ego at all. In other words, exactly like me! Seriously, though, we have a lot in common. Among other things, I inherited her ugly feet, her love of lilies and her obsession with books. She preferred mystery novels and gospel music. While I shared her love of mystery novels I wasn’t fond of the gospel music. I remember having a sleepover at her house, which happened often when I was young, and waking up to the smell of pancakes and bacon. I looked forward to breakfast with my Gram, we would sit at the table, eat and listen to her gospel music. I may not have been fond of her music, I was a young teen after all, but that time with her on those mornings meant the world to me. The difference in music we had was only skin-deep
That reminds me of one small difference between us: she was an amazing cook, while I still have trouble boiling noodles. Salmon cakes, pasta, and chocolate peanut butter no bake cookies were a few of my favorites. Everything she made was all so good. You could walk into her house and pass out from the smells alone. It makes me hungry just thinking about it. As we both grew older, we grew even closer. When my mom and I would fight, which

happened many times, she always took my side, even when I was clearly in the wrong. She defended and protected me. I could count on my gram to listen to me, support me in all my decisions. She would encourage me to do my best at everything I did and taught me to put my whole heart into it. There was a day where I felt a “weird feeling” like something bad happened,

Socratic Seminar

...in the story which was interesting to decipher. My thoughts immediately after reading the text were that Kid Death was really a metaphor for Nick who had always hid behind a mask to appear frightening and cool but once you “took off his mask.” He was just another Geek like Kid Death. I also thought that the Angel must also be a metaphor for something, and I realized that it was a metaphor for the angel that had saved Nick. I thought that Kid Death and the Angel bundled together represented what we perceive as the “Devil and Angel on our shoulders.” The Devil is Kid Death and the angel being the angel. This showed nicks inner battle to either remain behind a mask and be cool like Kid Death and make Bad things happen. Or be good like the angel and not be so cool but still be good, in the end he chose the path of the Angel and this changed his life since he started being good and not always acting tough since he knew what happens if he does. Before the seminar, I had a pretty clear idea of what the subject of the story was. I remembered the general area of the subject of the story was to constantly travel the good path in life. In the scene near the end of the text where Nick was “frozen in time” and was looking at the angel saving his brother. He could choose to follow the path of the angel which symbolized him being good or choose the path of Kid Death and keep being bad (or keep on his mask) . He chooses the path of the angel and chooses to remain good. By selecting the best...

...The analysis of two outstanding artworks: The Divine Shepherdess and Child with Saint John the Baptist and an Angel The art works in the art center provides a broad range of artistic visions from different period of times as well as various cultural backgrounds. Among them I choose two religious painting as my favorite: The Divine Shepherdess, from 1780-1800, which is an oil painting on canvas; and Domenico di Bartolomeo Ubaldini’s Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist and an Angel, from 1518-1520. The latter one is also an oil artwork, but on panel, not on canvas. According to the annotate of The Divine Shepherdess, the theme source comes from the words of Saint Antoine, who said: “Mary is the Good Shepherd who pastures the church with the blessed fruit of her womb.” In The Divine Shepherdess, Mary has been portrait as a young woman with care and love, providing protection and shelter to the lambs. Sitting on a rock under a tree, Mary wears a tunic with delicate gild flower patterns embroidered on it. On her shoulder hangs a dark blue mantle, which embroidered with identical gild flower pattern as her tunic and trimmed with lace. On the shepherdess’s dark wavy hair she wears a golden lace timed hat with red feather on the top. Two angles, one on the top corner at each side, hold a crown and are about to put it on Mary’s head. The red and white ribbons around the angles symbolize Mary and the lambs. Near Mary’s right hand was a shepherd’s crook...

Why Dogs Make the Best Pets

...companionship than a dog. A dog expresses love and affection in so many ways, from the affectionate licks on our face, the intimate wagging of their tails, to their hugs when you come home. I cannot think of another species in the universe other than a dog that is capable of expressing their unconditional love and unwavering loyalty. When you think of a pet the two obvious choices that come to mind are a dog or a cat. Some people may try to argue that a cat is a better pet, but a cat does not greet you at the door like a dog, nor is a cat as affectionate as a dog. A cat is more independent than a dog, they tend to come around when they need something where a dog actually identifies with their owners mood. My dog can actually sense my mood and react accordingly; when I am sick or sad my dogs lie with me just offering comfort. If you walk through any neighborhood you will see owners out with their dogs. Whether it is a walk down the street or a game of fetch in the park dog owners are more likely to be active and social. A common neighborhood staple has become the dog park where people gather to socialize with other owners while their dogs socialize with other dogs. I have yet to...

Writing to Remember

...April Horrocks EN2010 November 10th, 2014 Angels September 5th, 2011. I still remember it like it was yesterday. The weather was calm; it wasn’t hot, and it wasn’t cold. The wind wasn’t even blowing. Yet, somehow, it was still very yucky out. I didn’t realize this at the time, but it was the perfect weather for death. My phone rang at 5:14 AM, and it was a number I did not recognize so suddenly out of my sleep. I decided to ignore the call. Then seconds later, my phone rang again. This time I picked up, not knowing the moment I answered my life would be forever changed. At first I could not recognize the person on the other end of the line, because of all the pain and crying in her voice, but shortly I realized the person on the other end was the mother of my best friend. Burton Thomas Brown, also known as BT, was found dead on his parent’s couch. He overdosed on what we now know to be Xanax and painkillers. His heart just stopped. The instant I heard those words come out of his mother’s mouth, I think my heart stopped as well. I felt it shatter into five million tiny pieces, build itself back up, and shatter again five million more times. “Why would God, my God, allow for such a horrific thing to happen to such a beautiful person?” is the question that kept running through my confused mind. “Why BT?” I thought to myself, “Why now?” In the days that followed, I experienced a pain I had never knew existed. In comparison to child birth, it was much, much worse. This...

Before Dark

...I’m breaking both rules and my Aunt Gina is going to murder me. But she hasn’t flown in years and can’t remember the sweet tranquility and since of freedom and pure joy you get from flying. It’s just too much for me to give upIt was well past one in the morning and Mike and I were out downtown again. We missed the Light Rail. Again. “No, Mike that's not the point, I don't care about groundings. The point is it's your fault but when you get me home she's going to melt and say, 'Thank you Michael for bringing my irresponsible nephew home,” I smirked, “I'm half tempted to tell her exactly how angelic you are.” He gave me a horrified look, “Luke, come on.” I laughed at my friend knowing I would never do such a thing. Mike's reaction was understandable. Mike was son of Michael the Archangel. I am Lucian Morningstar, son of the devil. Right now he's committing treason against his father and heaven. The penalty for treason is getting cast out of heaven depending on severity of the crime they could go as far as casting you here to earth as an immortal human bound in the weak (in our terms the human is the weakest form of life) human body the shock of it could send you spiraling into a coma and you will be a immortal vegetable. In my opinion it's all bullshit to me. “Here use my cell to call Gabrielle and ask her to come and pick you up,” mike saw the look on my face then quickly added, “Come on Luke how mad can she get.” I snatched the phone, “You have my sister on speed dial?” I frowned...

...Coursework The sands were pearly white. I was memorised by the sea, as sapphire blue as my dear wife’s eyes. It was peaceful. Tranquil. The sun starred it’s raze down on the razor sharp sand. The aroma of hot dogs and filled my nostrils, permeating through the air. Just like the busy streets of New York, but the calm morning breeze of amity island was all I could feel around me. Not a single cloud in the sky, the day seemed as though it was going to be a perfect day, but what is perfect? Then like a flock of birds, they started to arrive, propelling and fighting over the best spots of the beach they could find. I gaze over like an eagle stalking its prey. Piercing screams, high-pitched laughter, children splashing, squishing, and shouting with joy. Beads of sweat trickled down my face as the sun, a gold coin in sky, effervescent, piercing through my skin like the diamond encrusted sand on the soles of my feet. I felt as though I was in paradise. I begin to notice the smiling shore ripple with force, accompanied by piercing screams and shouting. I emerge from my deck chair in alertness. Suddenly, a slim figure is swallowed by the gaping mouth of the Pacific Ocean. My heart begins to beat, race and pulsate, almost like the prey running away from the predator. In relief, she emerged, like a moth cradled in its cocoon, cradled on the shoulders of a friend. I declined back into the embracing arms of my chair feeling composed. I am still on edge, it almost seemed that as though it...

...shy, and drastically soft-spoken. I always have been, and probably always will be. My friends like me for that quality. That’s with friends though. One of my teachers this year constantly harps on my quietness. He says hi to me in the mornings, and it seems to me that he always says something like, “Why do you always sound so timid when I say hi to you? You’re not like that during class. So, why so shy now?” I’ve never legitimately answered him. But, I honestly don’t know why, because I’m only like that in school. Sure, I’m a little soft spoken, and sure I’m not the most talkative in that class, but I’m not unconfident. I’m just naturally soft spoken. I don’t normally raise my hand and blurt out answers, or go up to a teacher and have a random conversation. I don’t like talking in front of people, because I’m afraid of what they think. I’m afraid of being judged. It’s like I’m a whole other person. Frightened, and timid. On the other hand, at home I am a COMPLETELY different person. If my mom was to hear any of my teachers say, “She’s just an angel.”, or “She’s just so sweet.” .My mom probably wouldn’t believe any of them. At home I’m loud and I tend to speak my mind. Plus, my brother and I NEVER get along. I can get along with everyone else in the world but him. Something about him just sets me off. From the time I was born till about the age of five I was, in fact, a perfect little angel. After my brother had been around for a year things started...

...No Angel She fears the loneliness after losing the one closest to her. On the one hand, she might want to remember him and keep him in mind, honoring his memory, but on the other hand, she might want to move on. She has to liberate herself from the pain and loss, if she wants to move past the overwhelming situations that she faces occasionally: seeing her father in all of his shape, after he passed away. This is the actual situation of the first person narrator in Bernie McGill's short story ”No Angel”, which was written in 2010. Throughout this contemporary story, we hear about a woman named Annie, dealing with the loss of her father. Not only has she lost her father, but also her brother, who died as a teenager 23 years ago, and her mom, who died just a few months after. Annie lives alone now, and is having a tough time. With no family of her own to depend on, she is literally on her own, all the way up in distant Northern Ireland. The plot of the short story involves Annie meeting her father after his death, through different occasions. These supernatural occasions are divided into sections throughout the story, which is reflective of the distinctive composition. Instead of a coherent text, which normally characterizes the short story, there are different sections each consisting of a supernatural experience, which Annie, the narrator, experiences. The story jumps in time, from one occasion to another, which gives the story a special touch of its own. Some on the text...

Four Strateges

...thinkers of all time. Personality makes us who we are. I’ve learned that it guides me in how I make my life decisions and that I carry my personality into every situation. The type of personality you develop through the stages of life can adversely or positively affect your current life situation. In reading the chapter on the Dispositional Strategy I felt the authors were successful in relaying the information in such a way that made it easy to understand. The question that arose in my mind was is my personality made up from the gene pools of my parents and already predisposed or does it develop over time? For example, the idea of saying African-Americans are lazy or Jewish people are cheap, Italians are hot-headed, is a label that was placed on groups of people many decades ago and does not give a person the proper insight into one individual’s personality. I did not agree with the connection of describing groups of people by nationality or race in dispositional terms. After reading through the sections and doing some more research I have come to my own assessment that our personalities develop over time as we grow and are exposed to new experiences throughout our childhood. We start to develop our likes and dislikes, and I think that falls in line with the Freudian theory Freud’s theory on the Id and pleasure principle, ego and superego fell in line with my thoughts. The idea of the brain being broken down into “sections” and developing from infancy made sense...

...a day...60 minutes an hour...but only one like you in a lifetime. There are two reasons why I wake up in the morning: my alarm clock and you. Great minds contain ideas, solutions and reasons; scientific minds contain formulas, theories and figures; my mind contains only you! Love can be expressed in many ways. One way I know is to send it across the distance to the person who is reading this. If I could change the alphabet, I would put U and I together!  Minsan caring is better than loving. Minsan tea is better than coffee. Minsan smile is better than laughter. Pero nobody is better than you. There is night so we can appreciate day, sorrow so we can appreciate joy, evil so we can appreciate good, you so I can appreciate love. You look great today. How did I know? Because you look great everyday.  What is love? Those who don't like it call it responsibility. Those who play with it call it a game. Those who don't have it call it a dream. Those who understand it call it destiny. And me, I call it you. What is love? It is what makes your cell phone ring every time I send text messages.  If love can be avoided by simply closing our eyes, then I wouldn't blink at all for I don't want to let a second pass having fallen out of love with you.
