BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY

There are many different reasons why individuals abuse animals. Animal cruelty covers a wide range of actions (or lack of action), so one blanket answer simply isn't possible. Each type of abuse has displayed certain patterns of behavior that we can use to help understand more about why people commit the crimes we encounter today.
Animal cruelty is often broken down into two main categories: active and passive, also referred to as commission and omission, respectively.

Passive Cruelty (Acts of Omission)

Passive cruelty is typified by cases of neglect, where the crime is a lack of action rather than the action itself - however do not let the terminology fool you. Severe animal neglect can cause incredible pain and suffering to an animal.

Examples of neglect are starvation, dehydration, parasite infestations, allowing a collar to grow into an animal's skin, inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and failure to seek veterinary care when an animal needs medical attention.

In many cases of neglect where an investigator feels that the cruelty occurred as a result of ignorance, they may attempt to educate the pet owner and then revisit the situation to check for improvements. In more severe cases however, exigent circumstances may require that the animal is removed from the site immediately and taken in for urgent medical care.

Active Cruelty (Acts of Commission)

Active cruelty implies malicious intent, where a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal, and is sometimes referred to as NAI (Non-Accidental Injury). Acts of intentional cruelty are often some of the most disturbing and should be considered signs of serious psychological problems. This type of behavior is often associated with sociopathic behavior and should be taken very seriously.

Animal abuse in violent homes can take many forms and can occur for many reasons. Many times a parent or domestic partner who is abusive may kill, or threaten to kill, the household pets to intimidate family members into sexual abuse, to remain silent about previous or current abuse, or simply to psychologically torture the victims, flexing their "power".

Major concerns in animal cruelty
1. Animal Neglecting
The most common type of animal cruelty is neglect or abandonment - that is, people not providing adequate care for animals in their charge. These types of cases often involve situations where an animal is left without food, water or shelter, or when proper veterinary care was not obtained. In many of these cases, the underlying reason can sometimes be explained by the caretaker's ignorance. This is why many animal control officers and humane law enforcement officers will first attempt to educate the neglectful caretaker, rather than immediately citing them or arresting them.

While ignorance can be blamed in some of these situations, an additional cause that seems to be a major contributor to neglect and abandonment cases is that the pet owner simply does not care. Even people with only the most basic knowledge of animal care can see that an animal has degenerated to the point where it is only skin and bones.

Many times, animals are purchased as pets, and simply forgotten about. Animals in this situation however do not merely gather dust. They are slowly starved or dehydrated to death, literally bled dry due to parasite infestations, or slowly garroted by their own collars.

Body Condition
• EMACIATED: Ribs, backbones, pelvic bones, etc. all prominent from a distance. No visible body fat, obvious loss of muscle mass.
• VERY THIN: Ribs, backbones, pelvic bones easily visible. No palpable fat. Minimal loss of muscle mass.
• THIN: Ribs easily palpated and may be visible with no palpable fat. Top of backbone visible. Pelvic bones becoming prominent. Obvious waist and abdominal tuck.
• UNDERWEIGHT: Ribs easily palpable with no visible fat covering. Waist easily noted, viewed from above. Abdominal tuck evident.
• IDEAL: Ribs palpable without excess fat covering. Waist observed behind ribs when viewed from above. Abdomen tucked up when viewed from side.
• OVERWEIGHT: Ribs palpable with slight excess fat covering. Waist is discernible viewed from above but is not prominent. Abdominal tuck apparent.
• HEAVY: Ribs palpable with difficulty, heavy fat cover. Noticeable fat deposits over lumbar area and base of tail. Waist absent or barely visible. Abdominal tuck may be absent.
• OBESE: Ribs not palpable under very heavy fat cover, or palpable only with significant pressure. Heavy fat deposits over backbone and base of tail. No waist or abdominal tuck. Obvious abdominal distension may be present.
• GROSSLY OBESE: Massive fat deposits on chest, spine, and base of tail. Waist and abdominal tuck absent. Fat deposits on neck and legs. Obvious abdominal distension.
2. Animal Poisoning and Shooting
Poisonings and shootings are the most common types of animal abuse we see in cases where a cat or dog was permitted to roam the neighborhood, either deliberately or by accident. All animal cruelty is tragic, but cases involving the shooting or poisoning of a companion animal are often even more tragic because in most situations, the act could have been prevented.

Individuals who allow their animal companions to go outside unsupervised are putting those animals in very real danger of being harmed by people who are irritated by animals' barking, defecating in yards, digging in flowerbeds, or bothering other animals. Those who are left alone in fenced-in yards or tethered at the end of chain are at the mercy of cruel neighbors or passersby who may maliciously harm them. It is imperative that pet owners supervise animals' time outdoors and ensure the safety of the animals they care for by taking them for walks on a leash, visiting parks, or playing in a safe, secure yard together.

3. Animal Crushing
Crush videos, also known as squish or trampling videos, cater to fetishists who gain sexual gratification from watching women torture and kill small animals by stepping on them.
Typically, those crushing will use their buttocks or feet, making this fetish popular amongst many foot fetishists, as crushing by feet is usually the main focus. The foot (barefoot or in shoes) is thus often idolized by someone with a crush fetish.
With the explosive growth of peer-to-peer file sharing networks, the availability and production of crush videos is already increasing dramatically.
Additionally, the increasing popularity of websites that thrive on displaying shocking and violent videos is putting more of these types of videos into the mainstream.

4. Bestiality
Bestiality (or zoophilia) is a paraphilia defined as an affinity, attraction or sexual attraction by a human to non-human animals. Because this topic deals openly about the nature of bestiality, it is intended for mature audiences only.
The term bestiality actually tells us much more about cultural attitudes toward animals than it does about sex with animals. Concern about bestiality generally focuses on human beings; thus experts tell us it is usually harmless while debating its frequency. If we call it forced sex with animals, we reclaim the animal's perspective as a central concern. It is more prevalent than we can measure and is not harmless; it is always animal abuse.

Types of sex with Animals
• Opportunistic or Safety-Valve sex: "I need a sexual release... they're available... there are no human partners around... I'll get it with an animal."
• Fixated Sex: Animals become love objects and are the exclusive sexual "partners" for a human.
• Domineering sex: When batterers, rapists and pornographers force sex between a human and an animal for purposes of humiliation, sexual exploitation, dominance and control. C.J.A. Safety-valve sex is often seen as a casual act of the curious young, as sexual exploration rather than deviancy.

5. Animal Experimentation
It is said that over 70 million animals are tortured and killed in laboratories each year. Rabbits are routinely blinded in a process named the 'Draize' test. The Draize test protects companies from potential lawsuits, and does not necessarily protect or guarantee human safety. Purchasing cosmetics from companies who specify no animal testing is one small step that can be taken to prevent animal cruelty. The medical research field also take part in animal experimentation.

6. Animals for Entertainment
Since 1990 captive elephants have killed 43 people. Elephants are peaceful animals, and this suggests that their treatment and cruel training techniques cause the animal to suffer and act in defence.

Bullfights and cockfights still exist in today's world. Bullfights in particular being incredibly gruesome and cruel, with animals being tortured and having spears thrown into their backs until they finally succumb to a slow death.
Greyhounds after finishing their racing life are often killed or sent for experimentation.

7. Fur Farms
Animals are 'harvested' for their fur on 'fur farms’; millions of animals each year are killed. Animal cruelty is also prevalent in the trapping of animals, which is one known method many trappers use.

Even those of us not directly engaged in the more nefarious activities of this nature metaphorically shrug and, remaining oblivious to the suffering, turn our attention to the relatively inconsequential and superficial as more appropriate and deserving focal points for our sympathy.

Animal Cruelty

...1013.087 9 December 2010 Cruelty towards Animals and Their Rights If killing animals was entertaining to the people by abusing them and possibly causing them to fight, would you join the cruel humans that are doing this just to have fun watching animals fight and be abused? Animal cruelty comes in different ways from animal abuse, fighting the animals, and even mistreating them. Cruelty to animals is growing all over the United States even out of the US, especially dog fighting and cock fighting has grown dramatically. Animals used for other purposes are being abused more. The poor animals feel pain and suffer every time they are killed or mistreated. Even though my own father commits animal cruelty, still does not change the way I feel towards animal cruelty. My father thinks it is not bad to fight roosters, but I always tell him that fighting them is very cruel to the rooster. Two main animals used for fighting are roosters and dogs. They are trained and forced to fight each other to death, which cock fighters find interesting and gamble their money. Animal Rights and Human Obligations Second Edition, Ed. by Tom Regan and Peter singer, specifies the rights of animals, treatment of animals, killing and value of life of animals, etc. It has various authors on each specific topic that makes it more interesting. I argue that animals should be given their rights and not be tortured by humans for no apparent reason...

Animal Cruelty

...Animal Cruelty It’s dark, quiet, and you’re all by yourself. You whine and yell for help but nobody seems to hear you. The people you thought were your family abandoned you, left you all alone in a small confined cage. There is no place to use the bathroom, other than where you stand. The awful stench of your faeces grows worse and worse each second. The only food they left you with, you ate in the first day. Now the only thing keeping you alive is your desperation to eat and drink your own waste and the will to survive. You are a dog left to die by its owners, with the thought that you are lower than humans and have no real importance or worth. I have always been an animal lover and it has always disgusted me to see an animal being mistreated. Even when I am watching a movie and an animal gets hurt I always cringe with sadness. I remember I had these neighbors; we were good friends with them. They always wanted to have a dog but either they never had the money to take care of a pet or they just did not know how. That never stopped them from constantly having a dog. I remember two specific dogs they had, one was a mixed bulldog, Daisy, and the other was a Jack Russell Terrier, Jack. Daisy was such a beautiful sweet dog, but the way she was treated was poor. If they did not have any dog food they would feed her cereal and milk. They also considered spraying her with a hose while she ran around in the backyard a bath. The worst thing that happened to her was that one day...

Animal Cruelty

...Animal cruelty Recently a series of cat-abused cases had infuriated all walks of lives in Hong Kong. Actually the cases of animal abuse are rising unceasingly in these years. The former chief of Health and Food Bureau Dr. York Chow Yat-ngok(2011) claimed that it had received 534 complaints related to animal abuse in 2011,which was the three times of the 187 cases in 2008. There are three major causes lead to animal abuse. Firstly, it may relate to the broken childhood of abusers. According to an article, a former animal abuser, who killed three dogs when he was young, said the roaring of dogs always scared him when he was still a child. Therefore, when he grows up, he showed hatred towards dogs. A foreign psychologist revealed that a large part of animal abusers had the experience of suffering from domestic violence in their childhood. The hatred make them become abusive to others especially defenseless animals in their later lives. Secondly, there are too many stray animals in Hong Kong. Some volunteers feed stray animals regularly. Street animals then always gather on the street and lead to hygiene problems and aroused discontent of citizens. Thirdly, some immature teens abuse animals just for fun. It seems to be a trend recently that record the process of abusing animals and then put the clip on YouTube, and gaining the sense of pride by accumulating the clicks. To make it clear, before searching the solution of relieving the animal abuse problem, we need...

...should be doing more to prevent animal cruelty. Everyday, all over the world, animals are mistreated and abused by incompetent, cruel owners; often just to satisfy human pleasures. We are supporting the abuse and ignoring simple rights that they should have. For instance, do you agree that a dog has the right not to have pain inflicted on him or her unnecessarily? Infuriating and heartbreaking: we are still standing by and allowing this to happen. It is even more sickening when we realise that, everyday, ignoring the cat down the street being kicked by its owner or selecting what perfume or make-up to buy in our favourite shop- we may actually be contributing to the abuse of animals. Whether, a neglectful owner or science technician, we must do more to reduce this horrible reality. A huge number of the domestic animals are suffering in terrible conditions. Domestic abuse is prevalent in all areas of society today. Millions of domestic animals never know a caring human touch and live hard lives on the street before dying painful deaths. The three most common pets abused are dogs, cats and horses. To put this into a shocking reality, in the year 2007, the internet source buzzle.com, declared that a dreadful 64.5 percent of dogs were reported with some sort of abuse, 18 percent of cats suffered at the hands of mindless humans and 25 percent of other animal species[->0] were reported to have undergone some sort of cruelty. This is in comparison to the total...

...caused uproar amongst millions of animal lovers. While this press undoubtedly raised awareness of the perils of animal cruelty, there are still hundreds and hundreds of cases that go unnoticed every day. For how loving and caring animals are to human beings, it is about time that we stand up to those who mistreat them and give animals the support they need and deserve. There have obviously been several animal activist groups over the years such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) but there is still so much we can do to raise awareness of this issue and make a difference. There are varying degrees of animal cruelty, however, one no better than the other. It is important to recognize each one and the motives behind the owner’s abuse because there needs to be different ways to handle these crimes. There is blatant abuse, such as in the Michael Vick case, where owners put animals in an atmosphere that is detrimental to their health and well-being. As for Vick, he bred and trained dogs to become vicious fighters as a part of his operation called “Bad Newz Kennels” (Schorn 1). CBS Sports Anchor James Brown asked Vick in an interview what had motivated him to continue to run this operation despite him knowing the risks and consequences of doing so (1). Vick cited that despite knowing everything he was doing was wrong, it was the competition and adrenaline that kept him in the business (1). The second form of animal cruelty can be best described as overall...

Animal Cruelty Laws

...Animal cruelty laws should be tightened in the United States because pet owners and companies around the country are still treating animals very poorly and using them in the wrong ways as test subjects for their products. Thousands of animals are abused every day and only half the time is something done about it. Animal cruelty should not be a small issue, it needs to be properly addressed. Animals that have been abused and neglected get stuck with long term psychological and sometimes physical effects. The animals become helpless, hurt and most times abandoned. Animals cannot communicate with humans like we do so we must be the voice to put an end to their abuse. Common animals that suffer from abuse, and domestic violence are...

Animal Cruelty

...Animal Cruelty ‘Humanity needs to respect all living things that we share this planet with, animals, the environment (WWF, 2012).’ However, animal cruelty has been reported in different parts of the world and has continued at a very fast rate. It is a growing problem that needs to stop. I have always loved animals, especially dogs. For this reason, I defend my belief that animals should be treated with dignity. One must ask, what goes on in people’s mind that leads to this type of heinous actions on animals? Where does the root of the problem begin? This paper will analyze the causes, signs and prevention of animal cruelty. There are two forms of animal cruelty. One is active cruelty that is deliberately inflicted to cause harm (CFAWR, 2010). The other one is passive cruelty which the harm inflicted through willful disregard, in turn generating into long-term suffering. Regardless of the kind of cruelty, the effects are pronounced in the animals. Those abusing animals are highly likely to perpetrate violent crimes against humans. Negative behaviors like animal cruelty emerge from traumatic past. Animal cruelty in this regard is presented as diagnostic criteria for determining conduct disorder. This disorder is found in people who abuse both animals and humans. Clinical evidence considers animal cruelty as one of the signs that are shown in the initial phases of conduct disorder, normally at age 8 (CFAWR, 2010). Most of the studies that have been carried out in the recent...

Animal Cruelty

...Cruelty means inflicting pain and causing suffering. Animal cruelty is a nationwide problem rapidly growing in today’s society. Animals are being beaten and starved everyday and millions of helpless animals die each year because of heartless owners. There are many forms of animal cruelty; some of the most common forms are scientific research, abandonment, and mistreatment. Scientific research is a necessity of life, so it is said. Society needs to research to improve economy and the products of everyday life. This is all well and good, until something has to suffer. Many times companies test products on animals for the safety of humans. Monkeys, rats, mice, dogs, and cats are some of the candidates used for laboratory research. The major problem with animal testing is the animals usually suffer in a traumatizing experience. Many animals endure burns, hair loss, rashes and gashes. Some companies go as far as to place metal wires and rods in the animal’s head. However, researchers justify this inexcusable treatment with “it’s for science”. Yet you have to wonder if scientists think how they would feel in that situation. There are many companies out there that do not use animals for testing their products. Yet these companies still have popular products that are bought daily by all. For instance the company Lip Smackers, sell all kinds of lip-glosses, chap sticks and makeup and they do not use animal to test their products. Many parents buy these items for their children as presents...

Animal Cruelty Commercial Analysis

...Animal Cruelty Commercial "Woof Woof", do you hear that sound? Oh great it’s another one of those dying dogs commercial… If you are one of the many individuals that have stumbled across one of Sarah McLachlan’s animal cruelty commercials, then you might have felt the emotion coming from it. It is extremely sad and will make your happy day turn into a depressing puddle of sorrow because of those clips of the poor dying animals. This short two-minute commercial uses many rhetorical devices to persuade people to donate money but particularly focuses on the use of pathos, sympathy, and empathy toward the audience. The commercial starts off with a close up shot of a dog that looks sad, then a statistic fact about animal abuse pops up. Then a small donation is kindly asked to help the organization prevent animal abuse. The BCSPCA (British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) put together this video to help spread awareness on this ongoing issue and obtain donations to help rescue animals that are suffering from abuse. The targeted audience are people who are over eighteen years old or animal lovers, and/or who have money because it cost about sixty cents a day to help the organization. ...for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or "ASPCA", is a non profit organization dedicated to preventing cruelty of animals. There are abused animals all over America and ASPCA wants to find and rescue these animals with the help and support of the people of the United States. ASPCA released a very heart breaking commercial persuading the viewers to help these animals. It is very persuasive because they use visual images demonstrating the harsh and cruel environments these animals suffer in, which saddens most people to the point where they want to do something to help these animals. ASPCA is an extremely upsetting commerial because it makes you wonder how somebody could do that to an animal. It is also meant to be upsetting for the viewers. The reason for this is because when people watch something that hurts them in some way, most of the time, the outcome is that the people will want to do something to help. That's what ASPCA is aiming for. They want their viewers to recognize these traumatic lifestyles that the animals are living so that they can do something to help. ASPCA also adds...

...rockets out to the universe, build a hundred store buildings or even destroy a whole country with nuclear weapon. With this kind of power, we live as a superior. We get primary access to natural resources and often use animals to get what we need. For example, farm animals have been our great source of meat, dairy product, clothing and labor from thousands of years ago. But the way we obtain these may seem unfair to some people. The notion of hurting and slaughtering animal is always cruel. There have even been shocking reports of how slaughterhouses are run, in which they kept animals in an overcrowded, filthy environment and poorly nurtured before killing them. Although this prompted regulation laws, it still distressed some people. I was also disturbed when I learned how milk factories biologically modify cows to produce milk faster. The milk factories genetically modify and dose cows with special hormones, which speeds up milk production ten times faster than natural rate, then the cows are hooked up to milking machine all day long. It seemed very cruel. But from a different perspective, human preying on weaker species may be natural thing to do, just as how tigers would prey on jackals. It is essential for our survival. As much as it's unfair to hurt animals, some sacrifices do bring great benefit to the society. For instance, by experimenting medicine on rats, we are able to save millions of lives. In a way, it makes...
