Animal Rights To Pets: Sea World

Animal Rights Almost all of society grew up eating meat, dressing in leather, and going to zoos and circuses. Many families bought their pets from pet shops and breeders, rather than adopting one from a shelter. The world lives on eating McDonalds cheeseburgers and wearing UGG boots for fashion. Animal rights is the belief that animals have a right to live free of human use and exploitation. These rights are the philosophy of allowing non-human animals to have the most basic rights living up to their desires of living free from unnecessary pain and suffering and premature death (“Primer on Animal Rights”). Unfortunately, over time animals have lost rights, and many live in despicable conditions today. I am very interested in animal rights and have conducted in-depth research. After studying credible sources, I am able to discuss this topic. Animals deserve to have rights due to being incapable of making …show more content…
They are captured by chasing the animals until they can not go any further then trapping them. This proves that the animals are unaware and uncomfortable about what is happening to them. When placed in captivity, all marine life is forced to swim in circular tanks, with no where else to go. Orcas who are 95% of the time submerged in the ocean are now living in 40 feet deep tanks where the sun is constantly shining down on them. With the help of black zinc oxide to hide the burn, the public does not see how the sun truly affects these poor animals. The pain these animals are forced to deal with shows how little these businesses actually care about the animals. Marine animals also develop skin problems from living in heavily chlorinated water. While living in small tanks, no animal can live freely or safe of harm. Government issues on this problem are lax and need to be reinforced for better living

The Ethical Treatment of Animals in America

...The Ethical Treatment of Animals in America Arline Edmiston SOC 120: Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility Professor Susanne Elliott September 11, 2012 As with the majority of subjects that involve ethics, there is always more than just one point of view. It is not any different when it comes to the ethical treatment of animals. In fact, it has been the subject in which a few near war like situations have happened. For example, there are people who believe that any time an animal is killed even if that animal did not suffer they still see it as being wrong. Although, on the other hand there are people who relish in the ability to be able to eat meat and kill animals. However, the bottom line is that most people are somewhere in the middle over how they feel about what happens to the animals of the animal world that we share our world with. I will be going over some of these ideas and also be talking about some the groups associated with these ideas. The issue of animal rights is a very complex and touchy subject. There are both positive and negative sides to the animal rights issue. Both sides of which seem to have major contradictions to both themselves and to each other. Animal rights people have proposed that in the basic interest of the animals such things as avoidance of suffering should be given the same attention that it would be given to any human being. One such animal rights organization that believes this is PETA or People for the Ethical...

Natural Perceptions

...Chris Clarke on how Disney's treatment of animals
has altered our sense of the wild and cleared the way for environmental decline. As the close of the twentieth century approaches and our world becomes more and more urban our knowledge of nature is increasingly second-hand. Those of us in cities, whose non-human neighbors tend toward rats, pigeons and dandelions, are dependent on the media for our understanding of the natural world – or at least that part of it not adapted to urban life. It is from movies, television and packaged tourism that we derive our sense of nature. For the last half century, it has been Walt Disney and his corporate estate that have provided that sense. In doing so Disney has instilled an appreciation of nature in generations of media consumers. Many environmentalists and animal-rights activists credit Disney with awaking their concern for the environment. But this appreciation has not been delivered in a value-free package. From the outset Disney’s nature films have supported the notion that the natural world’s chief value lies in the profit that industrial society can extract from it. At first this support took the form of simple paeans to the righteousness of logging, mining and urban development. Now, amidst the increasing commodification of everything from tribal myth to basmati rice, the value extracted from nature is the right to define nature. Disney covets that right and will gain it at our peril. Not much besides hindsight distinguishes...

Animal Rights - Ethics

...into Animal Rights In May of 2007, two humpback whales, a mother and her calf, found themselves stranded in a fresh water river off the coast of California. They were in the process of migrating from Alaska to Mexico, when they made a wrong turn under the Golden Gate Bridge, and into the San Francisco Bay. They landed over 90 miles away from the Pacific Ocean that they needed to return to for survival. Their skin began showing signs of distress and injury, and the public decided it was time to get involved. They began sending in all their ideas on how the whales could be coaxed back through the river, into the bay, and off to the ocean. They sent e-mails, made phone calls and visits to government agencies, and came up with countless original ideas that they wanted to share with officials. The longer time went on, the more worried people were becoming about these whales. Fortunately, the Coast Guard was eventually successful in coaxing the whales back through the channel and out to the Pacific after many failed attempts. Why do people care so much about other living creatures? Another question I must bring up is should we be spending so much time and effort on them when there are many other human needs of people that need to be met around the world? I will be connecting many ethical philosophies to this idea of Animal Rights throughout this discussion, and hopefully you will be able to formulate your own moral stance to the answers of those questions. Shark Finning

...slowly dies. The shark may either drown, bleed to death or be eaten by other creatures. The shark can’t move or defend itself because it has no fins so it just sinks to the button of the sea; helpless. Shark finning is one of the most monstrous things you can do to an innocent animal. It’s like cutting a person’s hands and legs and leaving them alone. The person is vulnerable and defenceless. It’s such an evil practice to perform because the creature suffers and dies in pain. Some people wonder why the fishers toss the finless shark to the water as it’s really heartless to leave an animal to die like that. The fishers try to avoid paying for the fish because they are charged for every kilogram they bring in the boat. Shark meat is rarely eaten and therefore it’s very cheap. Fisher men care for the fins as they are expensive and light. The fishers would have had a loss if they brought the whole shark with them and that is why the toss the finless shark back to the sea. The shark eventually dies in a really cruel way and the fisher earns quite a lot of money for something that belongs to the shark. This practice can be easily compared to fur trade as we the human are stealing an essential piece of an animal. Humans have the power over animals as we are smarter and stronger. This doesn’t give us the right to steal from a weaker race. When the sharks are tossed back to the water, it takes a few hours until the shark dies, many inhumane things happen while the...

Peta

...an interest group, with examples. The interest group that I will discuss in this paper is the one of the most well-known animal rights groups in the world; People for the ethical treatment of animals, commonly known as, PETA. Founded in March 1980 by Newkirk and fellow animal rights activist Alex Pacheco, the organization first caught the public's attention in the summer of 1981 during what became known as the Silver Spring monkeys case, a widely publicized dispute about experiments conducted on 17 macaque monkeys inside the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. The group first came to public attention in 1981 during the Silver Spring monkey’s case, a dispute about experiments conducted by researcher Edward Taub on 17 macaque monkeys inside the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. (Eldercare Home Health, 2012) The case led to the first police raid in the United States on an animal laboratory, triggered an amendment in 1985 to the United States Animal Welfare Act, and became the first animal-testing case to be appealed to the United States Supreme Court, which upheld a Louisiana State Court ruling that denied PETA's request for custody of the monkeys. Pacheco had taken a job in May 1981 inside a primate research laboratory at the Institute, intending to gain firsthand experience of working inside an animal laboratory. Taub had been cutting sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys' fingers, hands, arms, and legs, a process...

There have been a lot of laws passed over the years to protect animals. Scientists have changed the way they experiment on animals. For many year’s scientists used animals to experiment on to enhance the human knowledge. Dogs, rabbits, and other animals were being used for experiments; after the experiments were done the scientist Bernard said “those experiments were unnecessary”. Canada's Seal Slaughter

...get off the ice floes. The seals that are successful getting off the ice floes but are already shot will slip beneath the water’s surface where they will slowly die from their wounds. Then, once the vessel reaches the ice floes the sealers run to the shot and wounded seals with their hakapiks, which are large wooden clubs with a curved ice pick at the end to drag the seals across the ice. When the sealers reach the wounded screaming baby seal, they then club it over the head. Hopefully, but rarely does it this happen, the seal will be dead. Finally, the sealer jabs the hakapik pick into the seal’s back to the vessel, where it will be skinned, all the while the seal is shaking and moaning still. This is not an acceptable way to be hunting animals in today’s society. Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is not big enough to regulate the commercial hunt, and there is too much waste in the seal hunt. The apathy of hunters towards the barbaric manner in which the seals are treated extends to those within the Canadian government. John Efford, former Canadian Minister of Natural Resources (“Why”) is quoted as saying: “Mr. Speaker, I would like to see the 6 million seals, or whatever number is out there, killed and sold, or destroyed and burned, I do not care what happens to them…the more kill the better I will love it.” The...

Atmospheric Pollution

...thing that was asked was to give a detailed description of the problem. Coming up with a detailed description was not a problem but difficult and time consuming. I have come up with a number of problems that atmospheric pollution, or global warming, has on people, animals and the world. Map Results I have found a map that shows the locations where there is air pollution. On this map, there are images of blue, purple and red dots. These dots represent the U.S. Industrial facilities that use toxic chemicals. The city and states with a high count of toxic usage had the blue and red dots next to them. These city and states are as follows: Phoenix, Arizona, Salt Lake City, Utah, San Diego, California, Los Angeles, California, Riverside, California, Bakersfield, California, San Francisco, California, Stockton, California, Sacramento, California, Las Vegas, Nevada, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle Washington. There are 34 city and states including Canada that are highlighted in purple. I find that this type of pollution is worse for the atmosphere than the typical types of pollutants. Toxic pollution can, will, and has already started to destroy the atmosphere. This is also more harmful on humans and animals. Pollution Changing the Weather Pollution is in the process of changing our weather drastic enough for everyone to feel and notice. For starters, the...
