Adichie Interview

...Adichie interview Literature means a lot for our common understanding of things. Literature goes beyond gender, race and class as Adichie points out in the interview. She’s reflecting how literature influences human life and takes root in her own life. She grew up reading Russian books, without fully understanding the many little details, but with a general understanding of the main things and themes. She was able to put the emotion of it in context to her everyday life. Adichie tells us how she felt as a kid, always wanting to become a storyteller, always observant and never really there as a whole person – even though it must be annoying for the people around her, she continues with a smile. She’s trying to deal with the assumptions about writers and their choices, which aren’t always deliberate choices, but often come suddenly, from the inside or maybe even the outside or with inspiration from the spirits, as she declares in the interview. Literature creates opinions and binds people together, no matter where you come from, as we can see with “The Thing Around Your Neck”. It’s simply easy to relate to. When we read “The Thing Around Your Neck”, I also pondered whether it was a story from her life or not? In this interview she discloses that none of the stories are from her personal life, but somehow they all are. Her personal life affects her writing, as on the other hand her writing affects the life of other people and their outlook on life. Adichie wants us...

Work, Work, Work

...Anyone looking to work in the restaurant business shouldn’t be expecting to just walk in and know exactly what they are doing. I run food, which sounds easy at first, but after awhile it becomes an extreme pain in the butt. Something as simple as giving food to a customer can become utterly annoying. I learned many things through working in restaurant. “It’s dog eat dog world”. This sentence reminds me how hard to keep restaurant business. One of the biggest misconception about the restaurant business is that people seem to think it’s easy -going. I can say one thing for sure, a popular restaurant will never be an easy-going restaurant, but working at a popular restaurant is the only way to make any sort of money. making money in a restaurant can often become competitive. For the servers and food runners, it’s all about making money, so it is inevitable that some workers are going to butt heads. Sometimes, I find myself hustling over to a table of people before another one of my workers can get there, it’s almost laughable but that’s just the way it works. Some might even go as far to say that the business is “dog eat dog” amongst the workers. It really is simple, whoever waits on the most tables is going to make the most money. Don’t get me wrong though, a server could wait on the most tables all night, but if their service isn’t good the amount of money they makes will be...

Book Report

...backs to soaking the most disagreeable teacher using water guns from an upstairs window, my friends and I tried all those seemingly interesting things to enjoy our carefree childhood. Nowadays, when retrospecting those bad little tricks, we would just laugh and joke. It seems that no one really cares about what children do and all those wrong doings should be forgiven. But still there is one thing that we regret till these days. It started from an April spring noon. Still in a daze after the long nap, I shuffled in the hallway and directly bumped into a man around the corner. I looked up to find who he was and immediately recognized him as the water bearer of our school. This unamiable middle-aged man lived in our school’s small warehouse with his wife and two sons. Looking hairy and unkempt, he always had a gloomy air around him. His eyes were glazed, deep set, frightening. His rough poker face made me instantly not sleepy at all and I awkwardly said:”Sorry. I just...” Not surprisingly, he spoke nothing, just cast a glance at me and then left. And it was at that moment that something evil occurred to me--I wanted to fool him. It must be fun. I kept walking, thinking about my plan and caught a glimpse of the warehouse which he lived. It was next to the stairs of our teaching building with a high, rusty iron gate. “It must be annoying if we knock that door heavily, isn’t it?”I murmured. What a “brilliant” idea! Excitedly rushing into the classroom, I couldn’t wait to tell...

...and many other but those three are the ones that are displayed the most. Out of all qualities Abigail displays devious is the one greatly revealed. Throughout the story there are many events that happen that Abigail had something to do with, with each event Abigail always has a different story from what actually happens and convinces people that her story is the truth. One event that happens that displays this would be when Abigail was in the woods with the girls dancing and took it to the next level by drinking blood and taking off her clothing. Before the questioning of what happen in the woods Abigail states “Shut up! All of you. We danced. That is all, and mark this, if anyone breathe a word or the edge of a word about the other things, I will come to you in the black of some terrible night, and I will bring with me a pointy reckoning that will shudder you! And you know I can do it. I saw Indians smash my dear parents' heads on the pillow next to mine. And I have seen some reddish work done at night. Old Spice Comercial

...My favorite commercial is the Old Spice commercial that starts with a man in a shower and ends with him on a horse. Even after studying the film terms and how things are shot I just couldn’t figure out how this was shot, so I did some research to find out. I just had to know! Here is what I found and it worth the time to watch, it is so cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDk9jjdiXJQ The entire commercial is filmed in one take. There are no voice-overs. It is all a medium shot. The first scene is a man in a shower holding the product in question. They use a crane to remove the shower and drop a sweater onto his neck, but it is done so fast you can’t tell and he is suddenly on a boat. The item in his hand appears to turn from one thing to another right in from of your eyes. They are then careful to keep the camera just above his waist level and he is slid onto a horse so in the next shot he has moved from the boat to a horse. It looks almost impossible to be done without computer editing. It is amazing, but there is almost no computer graphics used. Clever scripting, great camera angles, and an awesome set are what make this commercial stand apart from the rest. As Leo Laporte says “this commercial just makes you want to smell like this...

Dear Diary

...Dear Lord tell me why. I’ve been sitting here for hours just thinking about yesterday. It seems like every time I do think about it my heart shatters even more as tears run down my face like two never ending rivers. While I sit, I ask God over and over what did I do to deserve this. But of course there is no answer or reply. There are a couple of things that really hurt me yesterday and I mean REALLY!!! I was so hurt when Claudio said I as in me cheated on him when I know I did no such thing. Doesn’t he know how much I love him? Then another thing is my father; how could he say those things? How could he want to kill or disown me like that? He says he’s ashamed of me but after hearing what he said it is I who is ashamed of him. He should believe me because I’ve never done anything to sway his trust in me. I’ve been a loyal and faithful daughter. But the good things about this situation are that the Friar, Beatrice, and Benedick believe me. For this I am most thankful because it shows me who I can really trust. Now, there’s a plan for me to play dead so that Claudio can feel guilty for ‘killing’ me. The thing is even if I am madly and undeniably in love with him will I be able to forgive him easily. I feel the same towards my father will I forgive him easily once he finds out I’m innocent. There is so much to think about but I don’t yet. This situation is so hard on me. I’m not use to this kind of treatment, this torturous pain and it’s so hard to deal with...

Important Things

...Important Things I have many important things in my life that I could not live without. From people I know, to places I visit, even the music I listen to all means something to me. The very first thing that comes to mind when someone asks me what is important to me are the people that are important to me. My sister Krista is by far the best sister I could ever ask for; if I need anything she would be the first person that I go to for help. For example one time I got kicked out of a party at 3am and Krista came to pick me up. She is always there to talk about my problems and help me out. Obviously like any other normal siblings we do argue a lot, but it never lasts for very long. Krista is by far my favourite family member. Another person in my life that is extremely important to me is my nephew Cole. He is one year old and is the cutest baby I have ever seen. Cole can cheer me up even when I am in the worst mood. I remember one time I was having the worst day and nothing seemed to go right. I was being rude to everybody and nothing could make me smile. When I got home from school my sister showed up for a surprise visit with Cole and I instantly got the biggest smile on my face. It is impossible for me to be in a bad mood around him. Another thing that comes to mind when I'm asked what is important to me are the material things. I could never live without my iPod; I have a different playlist of music for every type of mood I am in. Music makes me happy when I'm upset...

...history. His road to success was not so easy though. He was mistreated by all of the other white players in the league because they didn’t like him. Jackie Robinson was constantly getting big cuts on his legs because when he would slide into base, the other players would get him with the bottom of their cleats. Jackie Robinson was on the Brooklyn Dodgers so many of his own teammates did not like him. Many of the pitchers from other teams threw the ball at him which gave him many bruises. Despite all of this, Jackie Robinson became a star in baseball and led the Brooklyn Dodgers to a World Series appearance. This example of Jackie Robinson shows that no matter how much adversity you go through, if you keep on working hard, you can achieve great things. Heroes also show the great quality of perseverance. Harriet Tubman is someone who showed exemplary perseverance. She was a slave that worked hard, but was still abused by her plantation owner. One day she decided that she was going to escape and that’s exactly what she did. She made it off the plantation and eventually found some people that thought slavery was wrong and decided to hide Harriet in their attic. They then helped Harriet find all of the safe houses. Once Harriet made it to freedom in one of the northern states, she had a thought. She thought there were so many other slaves that were...

Count on Me

...Students are facing with many issues in their lives, and because of the competing things for your attention, it’s hard to concentrate on studying. Studying can seem very boring when compared to any other exciting activity. You may even prefer doing non-sense things rather than to study your lessons. Too many people treat studying as the thing to do when you get around to it or have some spare time, too many people look at studying as necessary task, not an enjoyment or an opportunity to learn.( Grohol, 2006 ) Studying is important in our lives, especially to the lives of the students. Each student as unique individual has different abilities, approaches, ways of thinking, interests and ways of studying the lessons. These individual differences have significant influences on ones learning style and acquisition. Each student has different methods and ways of studying and these methods are sometimes helpful but some are not as effective as the others. (Oppapers, 2010) One reason we often don’t start studying until last possible minute is that we have misjudged how long it will actually take as to absorb and understand the material we are studying. If you are a student attending classes, you have probably experienced many moments when it is hard to make yourself settle down and study even when an important exam is coming up. Most student put off studying until the very last minute. The night before the exam you’ll stay up all night cramming, getting little or no asleep at all...

What Is God

...but most of all, unexplainable. God does and did many unexplainable and unfathomable things. Things that have been proven true, and said that they really did happen. Yet, there are still some people who do not believe, or want to believe that there could possibly be something or someone out there who can control everything that happens around us. Or that could control what our future holds. I am not one of those people. I am the type of person who believes fully that these things did happen, and I believe that the reason behind these happenings was God. Over the span of the universes existence, God has shown time and time again just how powerful he is. He created the heavens and the earth, night and day, man and woman. God is truly a majestic and wondrous being that no one will ever be able to fully describe. Even trying to describe a little bit of is a very, complicated and strenuous task. To me God is the one and only, the head hancho. The true meaning of existence lays in his hand, he is the judge and the jury. Yet, he can be your best friend when no one else is around, the easiest person to talk to, when no one else seems to understand. He is truly the answer to your prayers. I have found that God is more than just something I can believe in, he is something I know is there. Its strange, because I have always been the kind of person that needs answers to everything, I need to know why things happen, and if I know why I want proof that it did. But with God it is a completely...

But to no one else is it ever as beautiful--except the rare man who manages to recover it, who knows that it has to be recovered. Garcia Lopez de Cardenas discovered the Grand Canyon and was amazed at the sight. It can be imagined: One crosses miles of desert, breaks through the mesquite, and there it is at one's feet. Later the government set the place aside as a national park, hoping to pass along to millions the experience of Cardenas. Does not one see the same sight from the Bright Angel Lodge that Cardenas saw? The assumption is that the Grand Canyon is a remarkably interesting and beautiful place and that if it had a certain value P for Cardenas, the same value P may be transmitted to any number of sightseers-just as Banting's discovery of insulin can be transmitted to any number of diabetics. A counterinfluence is at work, how- ever, and it would be nearer the truth to say that if the place is see? by a million sightseers, a single sightseer does not receive value p but a millionth part of value P . It is assumed that since the Grand Canyon has the fixed interest value P, tours can be organized for any number of people. A man in Boston decides to spend his vacation at the Grand Canyon. Literature

...ENG 1010 April 21, 2013 1. In the story Hard Choice the character of Sarty appears to be struggling with pleasing his father. The problems lies that Sarty knowing his father way of thinking is not the best and noble way of doing things. Sarty struggling with the issue of he knows that by getting revenge is not necessary the right to do. I think what makes this story more effective is the fact that Sarty went with his right mind and choose not to stay in that type of up brining because he knows what will become of his life. These are choices that in someone shape or form a lot of individuals deal with similar situations with their families and having to decide what they know is right and making the choice to do the right thing or wrong thing. 2. One of the weaknesses of Hard Choices in my opinion is the story telling how these three individuals are struggling of entering adulthood but what are their flaws that they are hiding. Does not tell how they handle situations under pressure. The story was engaging enough. 3. I would like the story of Hard Choices go into a lot more background information about the three individuals and their family lives. 4. What makes the Initiation into Adulthood so strong because the story deals with children growing into adulthood and learning how to make their own decisions and views on adulthood and forming there on identity into society and standing up to what he or she believes. “ At an early age...
