The Dangers of a Plant “It’s natural so it can’t be bad” is one of the many lies marijuana users tell themselves in order to indulge themselves on this so called “medicine.” Marijuana users claim the drug makes them feel good, it makes them calm down. They also say marijuana is not a drug, and not nearly as harmful as other drugs and alcohol. But, are these claims correct? Of course not. These are some of the many lies marijuana users tell others in order to spread the use and legalization of this drug. According to recent statistics from “DrugFreeWorld.org,” cannabis is the number three in the top five harmful substances which account for admission into drug treatment facilities in the United States. Although users may argue marijuana is not nearly as harmful as it has been perceived through the media, the drug wreaks havoc on a person’s health, destroys families and leads to prolonged and free drug abuse.
The risks of using marijuana far outweigh the “benefits” of the drug as it can lead to health issues regarding the heart, lungs, and brain. According to “AddictionBlog.org” the most common reasons people use marijuana are to relax, curiosity, and its deceptively low perception of harm. Yet, most of the users of marijuana are so ill informed of what the drug actually does to their bodies. Admittedly for most users of marijuana, it does “relax” the user in distorting their perception of the world; however, this temporary fix only leaves permanent damage. Prolonged use of marijuana has proven to be linked with loss of memory, learning, and trouble with thinking and problem solving. According to “alcoholism.com” marijuana also produces “anxiety, fear, distrust, and panic” and also “increases the risk of a heart attack by four times” that of a person who does not use the drug. In addition, the use of marijuana is not as harmless as most users believe

Legalization of Marijuana

...The Benefit of Legalizing Marijuana Of all legal reformations that should be made, the legalization of marijuana is perhaps the most necessary. If legalized on a controlled basis, it could greatly benefit our country in a variety of ways. Clearly the most controversial topic is marijuana's benefit to the medical community. The economy would also be a beneficiary of marijuana's legalization through taxation and all the while crime rates would inevitably decrease throughout the country. While many citizens are opposed to the legalization of marijuana they are often misinformed and misguided. Marijuana is a drug that is overlooked and can be used in many positive ways. There are many people that oppose the idea of legalizing marijuana and their point of view can be justified, but marijuana can be used for other purposes than getting “high”. Although there are valid points to each side, ultimately, if legalized the benefits of legal marijuana could greatly outweigh the risk. It has been documented that marijuana can severely reduce some effects of cancer. Also, it is known that marijuana has prolonged the lives of people who were diagnosed as terminally ill. Many rely on the drug to ease their pain and suffering. Another useful benefit is its aide in reducing nausea in chemotherapy patients. Medicinal uses for cannabis date back to 2737 B.C. when the Chinese emperor and pharmacologist Shen Neng prescribed the drug for gout, malaria, beriberi, rheumatism, and memory problems...

Legalize Marijuana

...Heading Heading Heading Title A lot of people in America perceive marijuana and people who use marijuana as something so horrible because of the way that the government portrays it, but most of those people who think this way fail to know the truth about marijuana. The fact of the matter is that the “dangers” of marijuana are over exaggerated and its classification is way out of proportion. Views about the use of cannabis have evolved over the decades. Cannabis has been around for centuries and legally used and distributed as a natural resource until it began to gain restrictions and regulations in the late 1800s and early 1900s soon leading to the illegalization of it in the 1930s with the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 (Guither). In the eyes of many people, the reasons for the illegalization of growing and distributing the hemp plant are untrue or over exaggerated, and this paper will address why marijuana should be legalized in America. The reasons for why the government should take the action of legalizing the use of marijuana, or cannabis, are endless, but this paper focuses on the facts that cannabis has a multitude of known, positive uses, that legalizing it will take thousands and thousands of good people out of prisons, and that legalizing the use of marijuana could actually have economically positive effects on the country. Marijuana has been around long before it was known as a recreational drug in the early 1900s. The known uses of the hemp plant go back to as early...

Our Right to Choose

...ITT-Tech The topic of legalizing marijuana has become a very hot topic here in the Unites States of America. With sixteen states having medical marijuana laws already in place and seventeen states with pending legalization legislation (http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=002481); many communities are split on the issue due to misinformation and stigmas. Even though marijuana is stigmatized as a gateway drug that leads children to harder drugs, marijuana should be legalized for medicinal use because it is incredibly expensive to keep marijuana illegal and adults deserve freedom to use marijuana as medicine without having to deal with the criminal element or fear of being unjustly prosecuted. The gateway effect states that marijuana acts as a stepping stone, or a gateway, that leads people to harder drugs. They support their argument with statistics that show that most people who use hard drugs have tried marijuana before (http://www.mjlegal.org/gateway.html). What though is the gateway theory? Is it based on facts brought to light by years of scientific study? No, in fact the gateway theory does not explain anything at all. It is simply an observation that has been vague at best and dispersed by media outlets and the governing body. It is true that many people that use hard drugs such as heroin, cocaine, or LSD did in fact use marijuana before they tried the harder drugs. The true reason for this is marijuana is much more accessible due to its popularity...

Marijuana Paper

...Marijuana: also known as Mary Jane, reefer, pot, weed, and myriad ever-changing names. Whatever the term, the name is on everyone’s lips as the last five years saw scattered medicinal marijuana clinics located primarily in liberal states gave way to a wildfire movement of decriminalizing marijuana state-by-state. As of this writing, twenty-four states and the District of Columbia have instituted forms of marijuana legalization: twenty allow patients with certain incurable or degenerative and painful conditions to access marijuana for medical purposes, while Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Alaska, and DC have decriminalized marijuana for both medical and recreational purposes (State Marijuana Laws Map, 2016), with possibly as many as fourteen with potential legalization measures on the ballots this November (Rough, 2016). With public opinion shifting so quickly and marijuana becoming increasingly commonplace in American culture (pop and otherwise), it’s hard to imagine that this drug has been largely illegal and controlled in the United States for a century. Proponents of marijuana legalization argue that the initial criminalization of the plant has its roots in racism and capitalism, and that marijuana became the political sacrifice to the looming economic giant that was timber production in the early 1900s in the face of cheaper and more sustainable hemp competition. Criminalization of marijuana simultaneously created another reason to demonize people of color, especially Mexicans;...

Positive Outcomes of Legalized Marijuana

...Trevor Dibble Mrs. Willis English 11 May 23, 2014 Positive Outcomes of Legalized Marijuana The word "marijuana" has risen an eyebrow in almost every American today. Those that oppose legalizing the use of the plant automatically believe its use is to smoke it, but those that do not choose to use marijuana are thought to be in favor of keeping it illegal. Opposing views on the subject of decriminalizing the plant has caused much controversy over the past twenty-five years and still remains an important issue. The legalization of marijuana in the Unites States would drastically reduce crime in our cities and form a more productive society through its positive uses. The war on drugs deals with every level of society. Every year, the U.S. government spends large amounts of money to control drug use and to enforce laws enacted to protect society from the dangers of certain drugs. Some argue that the fight against drugs is not needed and that society has already lost the war on drugs and the only way to remedy the problem to end most of the fighting altogether is by decriminalizing the use of marijuana. William Buckley says, "Pot is harmful, but people should not go to jail for smoking it.” Buckley was a college professor at Columbia University and admitted to smoking marijuana on a national television show in 1973. At the time Buckley was quoted to say, "There were a half-million arrests due to pot use in 1973 respectively this makes the realization that...

Marijuana Debate

...over-crowding of our penal institutions, the diversion of our tax dollars from more productive areas, the corruption of our law enforcement agencies, and directly and indirectly the erosion of our civil rights? Since I am confining this paper to discussing the laws prohibiting marijuana use, I will concede that it fits the first two categories above; i.e. it is by law, illicit, and by its nature, mood-altering. With the third category we enter upon shaky ground. There is no scientific proof that the prolonged use of marijuana exacts a greater physical toll on the user than the equivalent abuse of nicotine or alcohol. Under the name Extract of Cannabis, marijuana was once widely used medicinally in the United States, and still has minor medicinal uses in other countries. There is only one species - Cannabis Sativa - which yields both a potent drug and a strong fiber long used in the manufacture of fine linen as well as canvas and rope. The seeds are valued as birdseed and the oil, which resembles linseed oil, is valuable because paints made with it dry quickly. A Chinese treatise on pharmacology alleges to date from 2737 B.C. contains what is usually cited as the first reference to marijuana. Through out the history of man in just about every culture the mention of this substance is found used both as a fiber...

According to an article, ??????? in 1619 the first American law pertaining to marijuana was passed by the Virginia Assembly, which required every farmer to grow the plant (????). Fibers from the hemp plant were used in the production of ship sails, rope and clothing. Drugs and Society

...John Finkbiner 12-12-11 Drugs and society 1. In the book, Strassman tries to illustrate through his clients the statement “these reports challenge our world view, and they raise the emotional intensity of debate: “Is it a dream? A hallucination? Or is it real?” “Where are these places? Inside or out?” in chapter 12, before introducing the different stories, Strassman states “Rarely did the DMT environment take center stage during someone’s trip” (p.176). There is no right way to answer those questions. Based on his volunteers and their experiences during their DMT trips, the one question that was answered was while tripping on this drug, what is reality? Different people saw different things, experienced different things, felt different things. But with all the people’s experiences, there were common themes in most trips; whether it was perceptions of DNA, seeing different shapes, seeing entities, or other things. From reading all of the examples, the questions above are answered by the participants as the trips are a reality. Strassman states this when he says “perhaps you think these perceptions are not so strange after all. We all dream of unusual places and things. However our volunteers not only saw these things, but felt an unshakeable certainty that they actually were there” (p.183). The volunteers all went somewhere in their trip. The felt real emotions. Mary Jane

...Brown May 1, 2012 Why Marijuana should be legalized In society today, Marijuana is looked down upon because it is considered a drug and controlled substance. Most people don’t realize the positive effects that marijuana can have on a person struggling with the side effects of cancer treatment such as chemotherapy. Marijuana has also shown that people who have a hard time eating or keeping food down are finding it easier to eat due to marijuana. Stress can be caused by anything from school to life at home, therefore making marijuana the perfect substance to “ease ones mind” and take their mind off of the stress they are dealing with. Although marijuana is illegal, marijuana should be legalized because studies have shown that marijuana, helps relieve side effects of cancer treatment, eating disorders and stress. Since marijuana's first recorded use dating back five thousand years ago, it has never gained much popularity until the last century with prohibition and antiwar movements. Now, more than ever, propositions to legalize the plant have risen and been subject to controversy and heated debate. Marijuana is the most widely used drug in the United States and considered to be the most harmful by the government with its anti-marijuana stance and laws aimed at controlling its use. With marijuana use rapidly growing, the United States national debt has never been so high, and the search for seemingly 'incurable' diseases raging on, marijuana has the potential to solve many...

Legalization of Marijuana

...Institution Course Date Legalization of marijuana Introduction In most regions, the use and possession of marijuana are considered illegal. Marijuana is also known as cannabis. For many years, cannabis has been termed as an illegal drug. Today some countries in the world have legalized marijuana. To be specific, a small amount of cannabis has been legalized in regions such as Europe, South America and North America. In USA, some states such as Washington and Colorado have also legalized the possession and the usage of marijuana for medical reasons. Most countries in the world have great penalties for the usage and possession of cannabis. It should be observed that these penalties range from very simple to severe punishments. The punishment for the small amount of marijuana is not the same as the punishment for the possession of a large amount (Earleywine, 2005). The paper does explain as to why cannabis should be legalized. Lack of evidence The main reason as to why the legalization of marijuana should be lawful is that there is lack of evidence for its legalization. From a philosophical point of view, people have the right to make choices and decision for themselves. Of course, it is the function of the government to limit those choices and decisions if the action that is taken by a person does not affect with the rights of other persons. Persons who choose and decide to use cannabis do so because of their free will. Marijuana should be legalized because for its medicinal...

The Gore Vidal was published on September twenty-six nineteen seventy, so the discussion on marijuana has been talked about over forty-four years now. It is about time that the American society accepts legalization of marijuana. Many Americans do not see anything wrong with a doctor prescribing them “legal drugs.” People think of marijuana in a negative ways because they are against the law.
