1. Factors that helped Manchester take off industrially include:

a) Very little regulation
b) Cheap labor
c) Proto-industrialization was already happeining in the countryside
d) Factory work was quite reputable amongst the non-conformist religious groups.
e) The laborers already had useful skills like weaving, spinning etc.
f) Manchester was located near a river which would later serve to power the factories.

2. During the early industrial revolution, the city of Manchester had the following characteristics:
a) The houses were built close to the factories which emitted a lot of pollutants
b) These houses were also very crowded, too many people lived in them
c) Sanitary conditions were poor and diseases like cholera broke out

Frederick Engles and Karl Max are known for the social movement called communism. They were of the idea that the Bourgeoisie in Manchester were doing a great injustice to the masses by maximizing profit at the expense of their workers’ health and lives. They believe that this injustice will eventually cause the masses to start a revolution against the Bourgeoisie.

Social Darwinism is the concept that in a human population the strong and healthy are smarter than the poor because they have genes to be that way and the poor will eventually die out as they cannot survive. In Manchester, this is how many wealthy people felt about the conditions rising from the industrial revolution. The wealthy built roads that didn’t go through the slum districts and acted totally ignorant of the plight of the masses.

5. In the 20th century, after new regulations were made:
a) Industries moved out of Manchester as new regulations were made
b) The government built better housing for the masses
c) After a while, families were not allowed to live in these government housing. Only singles could live
