APA Style Formatting

Plagiarism can be intentional. Buying a paper, submitting a friend’s, paying someone to write a paper for you, piecing together text from websites are only some examples. Most of the time, though, plagiarism is unintentional, resulting from a failure to cite sources or to cite them properly according to a style guide. Use this handout as a general guide to APA formatting and refer to the official APA Style Guide for full details: http://www.apastyle.org/ APA Style General Formatting  Standard letter paper size 8.5” x 11”  Typed at 12 pt. Time New Roman font and double-spaced  1” margins on all sides  Page header and number on all pages  Page number in top right corner of EVERY page. Title page starts as “1.”  Title in top left of EVERY page  Title page: “Running head: TITLE OF PAPER”  All other pages: “TITLE OF PAPER”  Use the “Page Header” tool in Microsoft Word Title Page  Double-spaced and in the upper half of the page. Include the full title (may take two lines), the writer’s name, the institution name. Do not bold or italicize anything.  Some professors may require additional information. Be sure to follow what your professor wants (date, professor’s name, course name/code/section, etc).
Running Head: TITLE OF PAPER

TITLE OF PAPER Your Name Ryerson University Your Professor’s Required Information

Abstract  Not always required, but advised  Located on page 2: First line, centered: “Abstract” (plain text)  Do not indent first line  In 150-250 words, detail the important points of the paper  Should include a concise summary of the key information (research topic, questions, participants, methods, results, and conclusions)

Introduction to APA Style What is APA style? APA is an editorial style recommended by the American Psychological Association (APA) for preparing scholarly manuscripts and student research papers. It is the standard format for papers, articles, and books in the social sciences. In addition to providing standardized rules for formatting a paper (margins, line spacing, etc.), APA style provides a consistent method for citing ideas, quotations, facts, and paraphrases borrowed from other sources. This standardized format for identifying sources used in a paper makes the paper more credible and ensures that other authors are given credit for their original thoughts and ideas. Are there other styles? Just as APA style is used by teachers in the social sciences, teachers in the arts and humanities may ask you to format your paper in MLA style; a history professor may ask you to use Chicago or Turabian; a biology professor might want you to submit a paper in yet another format. There are slight differences between the formats and each has a unique set of rules. Note the differences between......

Student Guide Paper

...Student Guide for Paper 1 Spring, 2012 Due by February 6, 2012, 11:59 p.m., Texas Time 1. Write a short term paper on a business / economics topic of your choice. Think of this paper as a short literature review. Note 1: Your research papers must be your own original work!  Be sure to give proper credit when you borrow or use someone else's words and ideas, including your own previously written works. See the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association pages 15-16 for specific information on Plagiarism and Self-Plagiarism. If proper credit is not given to the work of others, the paper will be assigned a grade of 0. Note 2: If you choose to use the same topic for Paper 1 and for Paper 2, remember that your review of related literature for Paper 1 will be part of the research design you develop in Paper 2. Choose sources for Paper 1 that will fit well with the research design you plan to develop in Paper 2. Note 3: Write your paper in third person. Scholarly works such as Paper 1 generally are written in third person to avoid reader concern about bias in an empirical study. 2. Use APA formatting. A large portion of your grade will be based on formatting. The items below provide basic APA formatting information that will help you as you begin the formatting process. You may have a formatting need, however, that is not covered in this basic information. You are responsible for reading all...
