Question 1: Determine how each corporate culture differs from the other.
When computing, software tools, and consumer electronics are mentioned, two companies immediately come to mind: Apple and Microsoft. While the two are alike, with the innovation of computer products, their corporate cultures show where the two differ and how it affects the success of the business. Apple was started by three men but one continued work for Apple on and off up until his demise, Steve Jobs, Apple's most important corporate culture. Jobs knew how to “leave something to the [consumers] imagination” creating utter excitement and the patience for the item to release. What led Apple to success was by running Apple as a startup corporate culture and the fact that “no other business is tougher on its partners by enforcing strict codes of secrecy” (Colvin et al., 2013). The strategies Job put into place seem to make Apple “a brutal and unforgiving place, where accountability is strictly enforced, decisions are swift, and communication is articulated clearly from the top to ensure no misunderstandings” (Lashinsky & Burke, 2011). Jobs held every person in place of power more and more accountable by “eliminating passive aggression and encouraging debate as new ideas are formulating” (Merchant 2010). This teaches leadership and ensures that Apple can and will continue its “computing and software duties” long after his tenure is up. It’s hard to argue this may be an undesirable strategy with the continued success Apple has seen. Bill Gates laid a strong foundation for Microsoft to thrive with the creation of his software corporation. To some “Microsoft seems to be a company without culture, but that notion changes upon entering the Sigma Building, which houses Microsoft Research Asia” (Wu 2009). Microsoft is branding itself not only in America but in Asia, the world’s most populated continent. Ballmer the current CEO is very positive and hopeful about Microsoft’s current and future endeavors, “the company is in terrific shape and one of its [Mircosoft] strengths has always been its culture of self-criticism” (Greene, Hamm, Brady, & Der Hovanesian, 2005). The ability to identify weaknesses within your own business is instrumental in success. You allow changes to be made before consumers can criticize the product.
Question 2: Analyze three (3) ways that each unique culture has benefited by the other's competition.
Apple and Microsoft use each other’s strengths to help advance their weak areas. First, Apple has great PCs and Microsoft provides the programs to make it run smoothly and easily. For example, Apple's Macintosh PC is highly technological which targets those who are more advanced with technology. Most of which are in a younger demographic. A majority of older PC users or beginning computer users look to Microsoft software because it is easier to understand than the few programs Apple users are offered with their Macintosh PCs. According to Cruikshank, “Gates demanded that Apple grant him the right to use the MAC OS in return for releasing the new Microsoft apps (63), so Apple, with its back against the wall consented . Second, the two create products which in turn cause the other company to brand a product after it; for example: Apple's creation of the iPad & Microsoft's Tablet. Third, they sometimes tend to create a product similar to their competition and fix issues already put in place by consumers to increase the demand for their product; for example: when Microsoft made a friendlier market for its users when downloading applications on the mobile phone. Microsoft has benefited by tapping into the video gaming world with the Xbox as well as internet search with Bing, two industries its competition has not.
Question 3: Speculate how each would continue to thrive if its current corporate culture would need to change in the near future. Be sure to state what change(s) you are speculating on and what led you to identify that possibility. Apple would continue to thrive even without Jobs hardnosed management, which Apple has proven since his recent death. Jobs kept things in perspective and always made sure he had few or no weak links. He was like a dog which smells fear; he could smell the passive aggression a mile away, which kept his employees on their toes at all times. The company will change the benefits and extra perks offered to their employees. One can only believe so because Jobs was instrumental in the employees always being on their toes. He expected this and didn’t feel that they needed to be rewarded for doing their job. Microsoft will continue to thrive even if their current culture of a relaxed work environment changes a bit. A little discipline never hurt anybody. It may change the atmosphere but in the end, if executed correctly will yield positive results. Microsoft will have to become tougher on their employees about leaking information on upcoming products. Their partners must know they mean business and keep hints away from the public until necessary.
Question 4: Use at least five (5) quality academic resources in this assignment.
Colvin, G., Fry, E., Taylor, I., Olster, S., Bradley, R., Akhtar, O., & DuBois, S. (2013). 50 greatest business rivalries of all time. Fortune International (Europe), 167 (5), 82.

Apple Mac Book Invention vs Innovation

...Invention vs. Innovation Invention and innovation are often treated as synonyms in conversation, which is simply not the case. Though they are similar in meaning, there are nuances that are lost if the wrong word is used. Dictionary.com defines invention as “a new, useful process, machine, improvement, etc., that did not exist previously and that is recognized as the product of some unique intuition or genius, as distinguished from ordinary mechanical skill or craftsmanship.” Innovation, on the other hand, is an improvement upon or makes an important contribution to a device or process already in existence. That is the important difference between the two—invention creates a whole new object or process while innovation makes that object or process better. Some companies call themselves leaders in innovation because they own many patents. A patent is “the exclusive right granted by a government to an inventor to manufacture, use, or sell an invention for a certain number of years,” according to Dictionary.com. Although they do research to determine whether it is legal for the applicant to hold the patent, the US Patent Office does not test any invention to determine if it is actually useful. Thousands of patents are on file for useless devices or processes that have helped precisely no-one and made no impact on any industry. If a patent is useless, it may be an invention, but it most certainly is not an innovation. One example of outstanding innovation often given is the MacBook...

Apple vs Microsoft

...MICROSOFT VS MACBOOK INTRODUCTION May 2006 marked a special moment in computer history. Apple introduced the MacBook: the first consumer Apple laptop that runs on an Intel chip. This is significant because Windows users now can truly compare Windows-based laptops to the MacBook family. The speed of the MacBook is on pace with the speed of PC laptops. Windows users have less and less reasons to remain Windows users. Running parallel to the increasing reasons to consider Mac over Windows is the fact that our world has evolved from a desktop world to a laptop world. Laptops are so fast and well-equipped nowadays that they serve the needs of not only consumer users, but also professional users such as graphic designers and high-end Photoshop users. There's now only two groups of users that should even consider buying desktops:1. mega-power users. This includes hardcore gamers, 3d animation users and professional video editors. These guys need the fastest machines available to make their processor-hogging routines running faster and faster.2. super-budget users. You can get a nice desktop for $500 nowadays. nice laptops go for about $1000+.That leaves the rest of us. And that's a large group. Laptops offer a freedom that no desktop (or even an iMac) can offer: Portability. Use the laptop on the couch while watching TV. Use it at your desk to get serious work done. Use it on the deck to enjoy the spring weather. Use it at the coffee shop or library to simply look cool. Plus, they...

...Mac Vs. PC “The biggest ongoing discussion has to be the one that’s dominated the technological world for well over two decades: the Mac vs Pc debate” (Intel.com). Many have debated that Pc is better than Mac while others have debated Mac is better than Pc. Only a few have said that it depends on what it’s used for. If only we had more insight to both sides of Mac and Pc. Many people pick a computer based on what they are used for to and don’t find the computer that’s right for them. Others don’t find out the facts about each computer and just go with the cheapest because it’s cheap, even though they would be getting a cheap computer it can still be the wrong kind of computer for them, plus it wouldn’t work to their advantage. Before reading this you have to dismiss the ideas you had about Mac’s and Pc’s. If you put aside what you think you know about Pc, and Mac you will understand what computer is best for you. “Mac is a line of personal (PCs) designed, developed, and marketed by Inc. ...Corporation, 2013). There are three main operating systems Windows, Mac, and Linux. When it comes to popularity and market share the most popular operating systems are Windows and Mac. Linux is an operating system that is popular with desktop users (HubPages, 2013), According to HubPages, “Windows is the Operating System with the largest market share. However, this doesn’t make it the best when it comes to quality and consistency as it is constantly marred with problems of viruses and malware (HubPages, 2013).” It usually had an affordable price tag at first, but the consumer is charges extra items like soft wear and anti-virus expenses that add up (HubPages, 2013). Linux is usually thought as a less effective than Mac and Windows, however it does offer many software programs that are similar to the Windows and Mac programs for free (HubPages, 2013). All three computer operating systems have Intel processors that make them unique. According to Pearson Certification Team, “Macintosh computers have Intel processors, they are not PCs. Likewise, the Mac OS is not compatible with PC hardware, and PC- based operating systems, such as Windows and Linux, do not normally run on Macintosh computers (Pearson Certification Team, 2011,p 282).” From my personal experience, I prefer Apple products. I like the designs, the speed and the operating system. I cannot afford their products though, so I am using Windows as well. I feel like Apple is a much smoother operating system. ...other operating systems. Linux uses a tree like structure for memory management, and also using a numeric algorithm to make the best use of its valuable memory. The memory it manages is maintained in structures which enable protection of them by converting the list into the tree like structure. The tree is also balanced and not too much in depth. This helps for the information to be reached much more easily because it is closer for the processor to grab and use. It also cuts the time it takes for the processor to reach the data that would otherwise take longer to reach. The Virtual Address Descriptors marks the nodes within the tree as reserved, committed, or free. MAX OS works in a similar fashion to UNIX. Mac Memory Manacement

...Mac Memory Management For rough draft Mac OS is available on two processor architectures: the Motorola 68k series and the PowerPC. Mac OS has a flat address space, shared between all processes. There is no per-process memory protection. Application code runs in supervisor mode, so there is no instruction protection. Mac OS has virtual memory, in the limited sense that a larger fixed address space can be simulated, by storing the entire address space on disc. This size of this address space is fixed at boot time. The lowest part of memory is occupied by the system partition. This contains some system global values which applications should not access directly, although there is nothing to prevent them doing so. Historically, the Mac OS used a form of memory management that has fallen out of favor in modern systems. Criticism of this approach was one of the key areas addressed by the change to OS X. The original problem for the engineers of the Macintosh was how to make optimum use of the 128 KB of RAM that the machine was equipped with. Since at that time the machine could only run one application program at a time, and there was no fixed secondary storage, the engineers implemented a simple scheme which worked well with those particular constraints. However, that design choice did not scale well with the development of the machine, creating various difficulties for both programmers and users. ...Mac vs. PC/windows The technology market has severely impacted the world in the last decade. Apple and Microsoft are two companies whose competition to dominate sales has been mostly developed with computer sales. Apple’s computer is named “Mac” and Microsoft’s product can be recognized as windows PC. Microsoft has millions of customers because of the amazing job that the company has developed on marketing. However, Apple’s computer is undoubtedly better in three aspects: Productivity, security and design. The lighter you are, the faster you can run. This is an advise usually used for athletes, but can be applied for computers too. Mac has an immediate processing, because it does not have useless applications by default, and so, the software works faster. Furthermore, the apple keyboard facilities, as the multi-touch, give to the user a higher list of options to control the computer. On the other hand, windows PC wants to provide a big amount of options to the customer, for instance, more than 40 game by default. The computer usually gets slower for having apps that never are used by customers. However, the processing speed of computers can be affected for other reasons; malwares are one of these. A malware is malicious software used to corrupt computers. Apple has many restrictions for computer developers and its programing language is much more exclusive, because the software and hardware are both created by the same company. This strategy lets Apple to be much more careful...

Mobileme Case Study

...In July 9, 2008, Apple computer Inc. announced that the .Mac service would replace by the new MobileMe service. According to the company’s description, the new service would not only cover all the .Mac service, but also bring much more to their customers. . Mac offered the services such as 10GB of online storage, Web Gallery, E-mail account, Backup, iDisk and Tools for managing multiple Macs-including: Back to my Mac, sync etc. (My first Mac. n.d.). On top of all these services, MobileMe expended the service and enhance some of them. Find my Iphone was added, Iweb publish was added, and web applications also available. In addition, it supported multi-platform (Cory Bohon.2011). Since MobileMe was a replacement for the .Mac service and most of the services are similar, the MobileMe can fit into the category of improvement or revisions of existing products. As just look at the services that MobileMe provided, it seems like another great step for Apple. However, MobileMe was one of the worst products of the Apple Computer Inc. First, from the marketing point of view, product is the heart of the marketing mix, is the starting point (Lamb. Et al.2010). A product is something that performs, reliable and durable, so it meets the minimal expectations and earns customer trust (Ivan Knowles, 2012). As a new product, MobileMe did not meet the standard and people were disjointed by the service. “Unfortunately, after a week of intense testing of the service, I can’t recommend it, at least...

Operating Systems

... 3/21/15 An operating system takes input in the form of zeros and ones -- bits -- and runs them through various circuits and processors, the hardware behaves according to built in rules. We define these rules using gates, which take input and produce an output in a structured way. The operating system allows complex programs to access hardware to get results. Only the hardware's physical properties can limit what programs can do. You could design an operating system by physically programming it into a computer's circuits. This would require building electrical pathways using millions of gates. But such an operating system would be slow and you would need the patience of Jonah to use it. That's why operating systems like Mac OS X and Windows are software. Software is flexible and hardware is not -- you can make changes to software with updates. To do the same with hardware would mean switching out physical chips and circuit boards. Operating systems are like the manager for a computer, it’s the job of the OS to monitor what software needs and what the hardware can provide. When you run applications on your computer, the OS allocates the resources necessary to complete the task. That can include processing power, memory and computer storage access, among other things. Ideally the OS will make sure that your computer's hardware is never overtaxed. NT1110_StudentName_Module1_Lab.doc ...
