There are many technology companies in the world today, all are fighting to be innovative and gain market-share. Each company has successes and failures, one such company, Apple, has risen above most others. Apple has had many successes and failures, many of its success have related directly back to its culture and have driven technological innovation.
Three of Apple’s biggest successes are the iPod, iTunes, and iPhone. Introduced in 2001 the iPod offered consumers and easy interface to house up to 1000 “on the go” songs. For Apple, the iPod offered a monopoly type product with high margins. The iTunes application also rolled out in 2001 and offered users and easy interface to search and download music and movies. In 2002, Apple released the Windows version of iTunes instantly revolutionizing the music delivery market. To date Apple holds the number one spot for sales of MP3 players. The introduction of the iPhone combined the functionality of a cell phone, the iPod, Apple operating system and camera. Now users had mobile entertainment in the palm of their hands.
Three of Apple’s biggest failures are the Power Mac G4 Cube, Motorola Rokr, and PodNano 3rd Generation. The PowerMac G4 Cube is still known as being a revolutionary product to the industry. However, it was high priced, overheated and hardware components had a tendency to breakdown. The Rokr was a joint venture between Motorola and Apple to produce the first “iPhone” type mobile phone. Product Development was in control of Motorola. The end result was poor interface, minimal storage and low phone quality. Even Steve Jobs complained about the product. The iPod Nano; 3rd Generation was Apples attempt to make the first generation iPod less balky. Due to the balkiness of the product it grew a reputation as the”Fat Nano.” The flaws where later corrected with modernized product offerings and Apple returned the Nano

...Successes: Some of Apple’s biggest successes were Apple’s creating the first Intel chip equipped for its Macintosh computers and a few new software packages. Along with the iPod and iTunes which would not have had nearly as much impact if they hadn’t been matched with iTunes and App Exchange. A major key to Apple’s continued success is its ability to keep pushing the envelope in the areas of innovation. Three areas that Apple’s Scott Anthony, managing director, says contribute to their decade of success, “don’t focus on building beautiful products, think in terms of platforms and pipelines, and take a portfolio approach.” Failures: Some of their failures include the Mac Portable computer the Newton-handheld computer, released to early, before world was ready. Another drawback some consumers feel is the setting up of elitist or exclusive boundary or barriers to their products. For example, the Apple iPod products will only allow you to download iTunes songs from Apple iTunes which speaks to their digital rights management system which prohibits customers from utilizing competitor’s products. Success linked to culture Successes linked directly to the change of the sixty to seventy hour work week for employees endured during the middle nineties, the culture at Apple began to change and when into the survival mode, almost everything controversial was excused for ensuring the survival of the company. Case 1

...Established on April 1, 1976 Apple (then Apple computers Inc) has risen in these past 30 plus to be one of the most well-known companies in the electronics world today. Their innovative thinking and creative products have taken the world by storm. The truth behind it though is that they have not always been successful there have been times when they have fallen short of the mark and failed to gain the success that they have been known for. The following are a few examples of their successes and a few of their failures. Successes IMac (1998) Off Apples many successful endeavours none of them have outshined the IMac. Introduced in the year 1998 at a price of $1,199 the system took the technical world by storm. The IMac system was in interesting bit of technology having the CPU and the monitor built in one brightly coloured casing. The IMac was called an industry altering success the reason simply being that the digital age was in full swing and the IMac gave more power than anything on the market at the time, it was more compact than thing on the market at the time and it looked better with its candy coloured body. IPod (2001) One of the driving forces behind Apple’s success would have to be their tendency to make technology smaller and small, with even more power. This premise was very evident in the October 2001 release of the IPod music player. The selling point for the IPod was that it was 1000 songs in your pocket. At the time the world was deep into the CD era heading...

Apple Computer Successes & Failures

...Case Analysis 1: Apple Computer NETW583 – Strategic Management of Tech For this brief paper I have been asked to answer the following three questions about the company Apple Inc. : What were some of Apple's biggest successes and failures? How much of Apple's success can be linked directly back to its culture? How do the actions of Apple apply to the TCOs? The best way I can most effetely answer these questions is to start with the second question, How much of Apple's success can be linked directly back to its culture? I think that a Apples success can be significantly linked directly back to its culture. This question is easily supported by what happened when Apple hired John Sculley as their President and CEO in 1983 and pressured Steve Jobs to resign in 1985. During this period of time Sculley brought a corporate culture from Pepsi into Apple which was a significant change from what the company had been used to with Jobs leading the company. During the time that Sculley was at the realm Apple saw significant failures in which I will outline when answering the next question and he changed business models which adversely affected Apple to the extent that some say he almost drove Apple into the ground for good. After Jobs return in 1997 he immediately started driving the businesses culture in a completely different direction in which he focused on the experience his products gave the user and went on to inspire others in the company to be creative and come up with...

It seems to harness creativity, stimulate new ideas, and launches successful, profitable, revolutionary products. I believe that Apple’s biggest success is its ability to leverage its innovation processes to seize new opportunities in the marketplace and grow its business at an incredible pace. Steve Jobs, the co-founder and CEO of Apple, often boasts about the company culture and how it’s based upon innovation, forward thinking, and focus on the “experience”. Aside from obvious iPhone and iPad successes, Apple manifested many of its incredible products from incredible misses early in its history. Lisa and the Newton were both recklessly ambitious projects that failed, but were in line with Jobs’ forward thinking mantra. In 1983, the Lisa incorporated features like a drop-down menu bar, windows, a hierarchal file system, the ability to copy and paste, icons, folders and a mouse, while its competitors relied on cryptic text and keyboard commands such as MS-DOS. This user experience had previously existed only in research labs. The use of virtual memory coupled with a fairly slow disk system made the system performance seem sluggish at times. One of the main reasons of Lisa's failure was its astonishing price of $ 9,995 dollars (equivalent to $20,000 in 2010). The Newton, with its small size and handwriting-recognition software, is still considered by many to be a pioneer and...

Apple Computer Case Analysis

...Case Analysis 1 – Apple Computer: Research how Apple managed to reinvent itself over the years Question 1. What were some of Apple’s biggest successes and failures? Describe why. Apple has had plenty of successes and failures. Three of Apple’s biggest successes were the iPod, iTunes, and the iPhone. The iPod MP3 player introduced the world to a new technological advancement in October 2001. The iPod was so popular because it permitted access to thousands of songs and videos at the fingertips. The iPod is still a best seller 10 years later. I think the iPod has been a success because it has given customers relief from common CD problems, such as scratching, skipping, and misplacement. The iPod keeps customers’ musical library at their fingertips, which never scratches, skips, or becomes misplaced. iTunes is Apple’s popular media management software. iTunes has been successful by allowing customers to keep a library full of movies, music, mobile apps, ringtones, audio books, and podcasts. iTunes is the media management software that makes transferring data to the iPod and iPhone simple. I think iTunes has been a success because it has changed the way customers sort and keep track of their various music files, movie files, mobile apps, etc. The iPhone is Apple’s creation that launched the beginning of the smartphone phase. The iPhone does just about anything. It allows customers to download more than 120,000 high class apps, as well as use the built-in iPod. The...

Case Analysis 1 – Apple Computer

...What were some of Apple's biggest successes and failures? Describe why. I believe Apple's biggest success was the beginning or Apple's initial offer Apple I in 1976, this was mostly a prototype since there where only around 200 Apple I computers produced; they were all hand-built by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. While Steve Jobs handled the distribution and marketing of the Apple I, he was responsible for devising clever advertising tag-line: "Byte into an Apple." That was the beginning of Apple's innovating strategy, first out the door with the interactive graphical microcomputer, that Steve Jobs used to build upon, trough successes and failures. To Steve Wozniak it was about the product, reducing cost, simplicity, etc., but to Steve Jobs it was about to embark on building Apple computer corporation, a culture, a vision, at each reiteration he would discover a new principle of innovation, but I believe he would not truly understand that, until some twenty four plus years later, it will be interesting to see whether Tim Cook the new COO of Apple, keeps Apple on course, on the vision. Now, let's look at some of Apple's important success, like Mac OS X, server version was introduced in 1999, while the desktop version was introduced in 2001. Then there was iTunes, this was the BIG one, truly a innovative idea that would put Apple over the top (regardless that Apple is proprietary in nature), as one of the innovating companies, along with the iPod, also introduced in 2001, the...

...Apple’s biggest successes and failures? Describe why.  I would say the biggest success of apple’s product are;  Apple II ( unit sold 5-6 million) ( $1298)  Powerbook 140 (Units sold 300,000) ($1649)  Ipod ( Unit sold +220 million) ($399)  Macbook (Units sold +10million) ($1099)  iphone ( Units sold +4million) ($299 w/ contract)  Worst products and Biggest Failures  Apple III- so pricey (started $4500 and ran up to$8000) and it is bad. They replaced 14000 units. This unit grew so hot inside its fan less, cramped interior that chips would literary pop out of their sockets. Consumers rejected this unit and it just had 75000 unit sold over its 3yrs lifespan.  Apple Lisa- It is again a hell a lot of money ($10,000). Apple asked customers to cough up for it’s impressively innovative but otherwise unspectacular Lisa. It is not fast, and it wasn’t particularly hardware front. By that time, IBM-based PCs were substantially more affordable compare to Lisa. Lisa was dead and buried on 1985.  Apple Newton- Scorned in comic strips such as Doonesbury, and suffering from a digital glandular problem that kept the unit nearly as bulky as a small notebook, Apple’s Newton – widely considered to be the first tangible PDA – wasn’t an immediate failure. Indeed, the Newton was considered by many to be ahead of its time. But it’s oft ballyhooed handwriting recognition feature flopped initially (though it was later improved upon) and its price point, like so many other Apple products...
