Applichem was a specialty chemical manufacturer and the market leader for its main product named Release-ease.

Release-ease was a chemical which was added to plastic molding compound, helping separate molded parts and the mold

in an easier and cleaner manner. There were different requirements for Release-ease over regions. In Europe, customers

preferred packages of 50 kilos and used products within 12-month shelf life. Whereas, in the U.S. and other regions,

customers purchased packages from 0.5 kilo and product shelf life could range from 1 to 3 years.

Applichem had four plants: Gary (the U.S.), Frankfurt, Mexico, Sunchem (Japan). The management team was thinking

that Gary plant was operating ineffectively. Therefore the company conducted a study to compare the performance of the

four plants.

Competitive environment analysis

Applichem was dominant in market share globally and had advantage of the earliest registered patents. However,

competitive environment contained potential threats:

First, market demand for Release-ease was forecasted to be flat in the incoming five years. The slow growth of market

implied that Applichem had to be efficient and competitive to maintain the current market share.

Second, the biggest competitor, a U.S.-based company locating their only plant in Luxembourg, performed very well

in Europe. Meanwhile, the requirement of product quality and specifications in Europe is not homogeneous with other

market. Therefore, it was crucial for Applichem to pay attention on European segment to be competitive. In the U.S., there

was competition with a local manufacturer. Although a manager of Applichem thought that this rival did not have a long

term business, the company should not be complacent. In Japan, Applichem was the only company of which products

To determine this, a cost analysis must be conducted to verify the benefits of keeping production of Release-Ease in their current locations, or moving production to another location. When determining the cost benefits, transportation and production cost differences must be considered. Recommendations Through careful analysis, it is recommended that Production of Release-ease be maintained in Gary, Indiana. Instead of abandoning the Gary production facility due to its lack of production efficiencies, measures to improve the facility should be implemented. Ceasing production of Release-ease in Japan is also recommended. Although the plant in Japan is more technologically advanced, its high production costs and low productivity levels are valid reasons for eliminating the Release-ease production lines. Their nature and performance is discussed below and summarized in Table (1) : Gary Plant It is the company's first large manufacturing facility. It had designed capacity of 26 million pounds a year and produced 18 million in 1982 with 1000 non-union workers. Advantages: * The plant has very loyal employees, which can lead to low employee turnover rates. Not only are employees loyal to Applichem as a company, but they are also loyal to the plant manager as well. The two groups of STZ induced diabetic had divided into 2 batches. First batch of diabetic rats was consisted of 6 rats for both groups while the second batch was consisted of 9 rats for both groups. All of the rats in two groups had fasted for 12 hour before induced diabetic via STZ injection. After an injection, the rats with level of fasting blood sampling (FBS) above 200 mg/dl will take for further investigation.
