Scholarships

...average student. You are on athletic teams, but not the superstar athlete of your high school by any means. Students believe that they need to be the best at everything to receive a scholarship of any type, but that’s where a lot of them think wrong. Scholarships are available to almost any student and can be granted to students for more than just grades and athletics. The possibilities for scholarships are limitless and give you the best way to have some or even all of your college education paid for. Growing up many students think they need to be in the top ten or getting straight A’s and passing every test. Which isn’t completely wrong because when you do fall into that category it can make receiving scholarships an easier process. Although, if you don’t fall into that category scholarships are nowhere near impossible to receive because of the hundreds of options provided by companies and colleges in every state. Academic scholarships often called merit scholarships or awards, can be obtained by students who weren’t first in their class maybe, but still received good grades and show characteristics of a good student(“Types” para 2). Every academic scholarship is going to have different requirements and monetary amounts that can be awarded. A lot of companies offering scholarships look for individuals who possess leadership...

...INCREASING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EFFICIENCY 1 Increasing Efficiency in a Community College Scholarship Program Margit Brumbaugh Concordia University Portland An Action Research Proposal/Report Presented to The Graduate Program in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Masters in Education/Educational Leadership Concordia University Portland 2011 INCREASING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EFFICIENCY 2 Abstract This action research was designed to increase the efficiency of a community college scholarship program. The research developed in response to a desire to increase numbers of scholarship applications from students and to streamline the selection and financial reconciliation processes at the research site. The literature search revealed these aims to be common among community college scholarship programs nationwide. Data was gathered through surveys, interviews, and observations. Data analysis suggests that passive information on the part of colleges, lack of student confidence in qualifications, and lack of student awareness of the differences in scholarship criteria are significant contributing factors leading to low rates of application. Data related to recipient selection processes show that committee training, the use of multiple reviewers, and the use of consistently-applied scoring rubrics increase selection efficiency. Results suggest further research possibilities to determine the extent to which various scholarship marketing strategies, and the manner...

High School GPA

...At every school in America, there are students that go to school and work their hardest each and every day. They take the hardest classes and challenge themselves more than anyone in their school. At most schools these students are rewarded for deciding to take the difficult route and challenging themselves by means of a weighted GPA. However, there are also students like this who go to schools that do not have a weighted GPA, and the difficult classes they take weigh the same as a general level class. This is why state governments should introduce a statewide high school GPA, so that equality is provided to every student, especially when it comes to applying to college. Applying to college is important and a statewide GPA scale would positively affect this because, “Honors and advanced-placement classes and also can positively affect an admissions decision” (Weaver 1) and with this said GPA system each student would have the same opportunity as those who go to a different schools across the state. Grading systems have been around since the very beginning of schooling. Instructors needed some way to rank their students so they had an idea of how their teaching was affecting them.“In essence, grading is an exercise in professional judgment on the part of teachers. It involves the collection and evaluation of evidence on students' achievement or performance over a specified period of time, such as nine weeks, an academic semester, or entire school year” (Guskey 2). In the beginning...

...NARRATIVE FOR SGT BEN LAZARUK My name is Sgt Ben Lazaruk and I am applying for the Glider Pilot Scholarship. I am a level 4 cadet at #6 Jim White cross Squadron in Winnipeg. I am also the 2IC, second-in-command, of Mustang flight and an active member of our squadron’s ground school. I joined Air Cadets with a few goals; one of which was to live out my dream of flying and get my glider and pilot licenses hence why I am applying for this scholarship. I strongly believe that I have the work ethic, attitude, determination and dedication that are required to be successful at the Regional Gliding School in Gimli this year. At my squadron, I always attend extra cadet activities like sports nights, bush exercises, leadership and aviation weekends, glider familiarization days and most importantly ground school on Monday nights. Not only do I have an excellent attendance record but I also have a positive attitude towards the cadet program as well as everyone that is a part of it; I am also very respected by my peers. In recent years as a cadet, I have had the privilege to attend three different summer cadet camps. These cadet camps were the General Training and Basic Leadership courses in Penhold and the Basic Survival course in Cold Lake. Outside of cadets, I attend Miles McDonnell Collegiate. I am a grade 11 honors student in the very demanding International Baccalaureate Program. I maintain a very good reputation with my teachers as well as very good marks. I volunteer as a puppeteer...

...Star College – CyFair Honors Program Honors Scholarship Proposal Presented by: Jacob N. Qurashi and Tashara A. Frasier I. Title (Honors Scholarship Proposal )   II. Purpose To create a scholarship for LSC-CyFair students actively enrolled in honors courses or taking honors by contract which will aide students enrolled in these courses and serve as a recruitment and retention incentive to both the honors program and the college at large. III. Introduction a. Background As part of an ongoing student outreach campaign for the LSC-CyFair Honors Program, the Honors Student Organization has participated in many campus events this last year. Interested students frequently ask whether or not the Honors Program offers a scholarship to its students. At the present time LSC-CyFair does not offer a scholarship to its honors students. We believe creating a scholarship will not only help students taking honors classes which typically require additional materials or expenses in addition to those already incurred in the regular section, but can used as a marketing device for the honors program and the campus. Over the last couple of years, representatives of the Honors Student Organization have meet with Student Outreach to encourage publicity of the Honors Program at Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District high schools and local National Honors Society advisors; the addition of an honors scholarship would be a powerful selling point to both students...
