Are you ready, Boots

Are you ready, Boots is a short story written by Maggie Alderson in 2005. Are you ready, Boots is about an English girl named Lulu and her black leather boots. I will go through the following themes: Summary of the content, Characterization of Lulu, A comment on the role of men and a Conclusion.

It begins with Lulu, her very good friend Spencer and another friend are in New York in four days.
In a shoe department sale she finds these stunning boots, so fantastic that she they were made for her, and she buys them. But when they’re back in England, Lulu doesn’t want to wear them because they were so expensive. But six month later when she’s about to go out with Spencer, he asks her kindly, and encourages her to wear them. When she does that night, she meets a very attractive and kind man called Charlie. Later that night she walks directly to him (with her leather boots on), starts to talk with him and starts to flatter him. He become Lulu’s boyfriend, and he seems to be the one and only. It’s only Spencer who doesn’t think it’s okay, maybe because he is envious. After some time, Charlie proposes and she says yes. The same night she decides to wear the same dress, including the boots, like when they met each other first time. But when Charlie sees the boots, he asks her to take them off. Lulu makes a decision and leaves.
Charlie is a different kind of man. He is not funny and the same kind of nice like Spencer. But he meets Lulu at a time, where Lulu needs a man. He is handsome and good looking. There is no place in the text, where Lulu’s feelings for him is described, so I started thinking, that she maybe not loved him.
Lulu’s good friend Spencer and Charlie, Lulu’s boyfriend in the end of the story have important roles. Spencer is the guy who cares about Charlie. He’s always there for her, and I think they have been friends in many, many years.
You can see Lulu’s character in through her thoughts, language, dealings, and I also think, she doing it through her associates. She is the main character Lulu lives in London, but maybe she is from the States. She seems to have a close friend, or perhaps a previous close friend in a guy named Spencer, who lives in New York, but who lived in Charleston before that. It could be, that they grew up together in any case they know each other and seems to meet every time there is an opportunity. Lulu is most likely a woman, maybe not a teenager, but more a younger woman maybe in the Thirties. She says that she left school more than ten years ago, but perhaps not so much more. Regardless she is living a life as a younger person, than she actually is; I mean she drinks shops and so on.

It is okay to judge people's choice of clothing, if their choice of clothing is a provocation to others. But just because you have a different kind of taste, you are not allowed to judge other, because of their clothes. I also think that it depends on how close you are to the person, who maybe asks you, if you like her/his clothes. I think you should tell the truth.

Are You Ready Boots

...1: Characterisation of Lulu. Lulu seems to be self-assured and confident. This comes out it line 3 "Nancy Sinatra eat your heart out" and in line 8 "...all I could do after admiring myself". If she wasn't confident, she would not be admiring her own reflection in the mirror. She is also fashion-conscious, this is shown in the beginning of the story (line 5), when she buys an expensive pair of boots "they weren't just boots - they were actual Manolos". Only people interested in fashion would care if the boots were a brand a not. It also shows in line 11 that she is funny and has a sense of humour. "Grrrr... Copping a vamp pose..." In line 21, she reveals that there are two sides to her. The sensible side and the more pleasure-seeking or maybe irresponsible. "while the sensible side of my brain tried to reason with the champagne-fuddled one" At first she might seems to focus on the exterior, this comes out in line 83-84 "A good looking boyfriend..- Had a Porsche" , however she later reveals a more sensible side in line 133, where she looks beyond "the dashing, handsome exterior" and comes to the realisation that he is a "bigoted bore inside" (l. 134) 2: Comment on the role of the two male characters. In many ways, Spencer and Charlie represent the two sides there are to Lulu's personality. Spencer being the reasonable side by making her see......

Guidance Strategies

...keep the day flowing smoothly. One day, we were all going to be getting ready to go outside and play, since it was sunny and warm. My co-teacher, who works with the preschoolers, begins to get her children ready to go outside first, since most of them are able to get dressed by themselves. One of the children begins to grab everyone’s boots and coats and throw them into the center of the rug. My co-teacher sees this, gets down at the child’s level, looks him in the eyes, and says, “Why don’t you grab your boots and coat instead? Your friends are able to find theirs when they have finished using the bathroom.” This child then said, “But I can’t find them!” So my co-teacher then said, “Well, have you checked in your bag? I think I see a sleeve sticking out.” The boy looked up at her, smiled, and went and found his boots and coat and proceeded to put them on. My co-teacher then proceeded to tell the children to sit down on the rug and wait for their names to be called to line up at the door to go outside. When one of the children tried to go before their name was called, my co-teacher explained to him, “I’m sorry, but I did not call your name yet. You need to wait until you hear your name before you may line up.” One thing I really notice, if the use of clear positive directions, especially when it comes to transitions – this one in particular, where you have many children trying to get themselves ready to go outside and work off some energy, and some children can......
