A Brave Deed
Is risk taking an essential component for writers ? It is now very common for many writers to produce their work and think of the idea of “playing safe”. It is reasonable for writers to w want to secure their job as this field is very narrow and challenging. Working for Guardian newspaper, Glenn Greenwald and his team writes about the United States government’s surveillance towards their citizens and through the examples he researched with the help of former central intelligence agency employee, Edward Snowden. The article is a clear example of how a writer demonstrates the skill of risk taking. Greenwald took three main risks which includes the possibility of losing his life for reporting such sensitive information as well as not being allowed to enter the country and that his American passport would be cancelled to losing his job and receive criticism. The approach that Greenwald and his team took by secretly interviewing Snowden to publishing the article is a whole process of taking risks and being able to broadcast the truth to the public. The article “Edward Snowden: the whistleblower behind the NSA surveillance revelations” written and researched by Glenn Greenwald and his team. The article discusses the issue of the American government spying on their own citizens to sharing intelligence with Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters. Through interviewing Edward Snowden, a former central intelligence agency, the team has been able to gather detail information such as the core program of the national security agency called “Prism” which is similar to a database in which the

government has access to very private information of a normal person around the world as long as they use the networks that participates in the program.Once the article was published, it impacted United States and their allies. As Snowden fled to Hong Kong for numerous weeks, and then leaving to Russia, it has caused tense relationship between the parties, causing it become a world known topic. In today’s society, technology has been dominating our lives and that all humans are becoming dependent on. Greenwald usually writes with his laptop and sends it over to his colleagues to publish the article. However, prior to the writing about the American government’s surveillance program, he has written other articles online and publishing by himself. When articles are published online, it is very likely the audience of the people would become more diverse. The audience of this article is from teenagers that are spending an extreme amount on social networking sites to every single person that uses a computer as it could affect them. As Snowden mentioned in his interview with Greenwald, if has an email of the target, he can pull up everything that relates to that person. The article is written in a way to alert computer users about their identity online and that privacy is important when accessing a computer. If privacy settings are not adjusted to the user’s preference, it would be a risk as information can be recorded. Greenwald demonstrates risk taking skills to analyse to the audience in how the internet is a double edge blade. What is risk to you? In this article, readers may find the article shocking to read as computers has been slowly accustomed into our daily lives and drastically change how we operate during our spare time and work. Greenwald shows the characteristics of taking risks throughout this article. When writing about such sensitive topic, he could possibly endanger his life, being banned to enter United States due to assisting Snowden and also chances of losing his job as a writer due to disapproval by the public. Within the main article that Greenwald published, there

were also more related topics such as and in depth explanation of the “Prism” surveillance program generated by the American government to articles where he writes about being approached by Snowden through encrypted emails. “You have no idea what you’re into here. These people will kill you if they have to.” This is one of the lines said by Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) in the movie the movie “Bourne Ultimatum” to the reporter whom carries national security level data during the scene in the train station when being chased by CIA agents. Revealing highly classified national files may seem like it would only happen in Hollywood movies. However, it could happen in reality because a lot of what happens in today’s society can be reflected into movies. Greenwald could possibly result in to a similar situation just because of exposing highly sensitive information. When interviewed by New York Times, Greenwald and one of his teammates Laura Poitras, were asked about establishing a meeting with Snowden. The two were told by Snowden through encrypted email to meet in Hong Kong and was given instruction to wait at a restaurant and look for a man with a rubik’s cube. Greenwald and his team would have put their lives into danger as they may get threatened by the American government. “We would remove the batteries from our mobile phones and put them in refrigerator of Snowden's minibar, and placed pillows around the door to prevent anyone outside the room to listen in on their conversations.” said Greenwald. This shows the importance of being safe and secure while conducting an interview with Snowden as well as analysing the files that Snowden has. Although Snowden has left Hong Kong and flee to Russia, the possibility of the American government seeking revenge towards Greenwald and his team still exists, since they all have viewed the files that Snowden has stole. Through the process of meeting with Snowden, to conducting the interview and processing the information, Greenwald and his team have jeopardise their lives to retrieve strong evidence support their work pieces reported to the audience.

Is it necessary for Greenwald whose nationality is American to report such information to the world, knowing that it can affect the American government? When Snowden fled to Hong Kong, the American government has taken in to action to charge him with theft of government property and has terminated his passport. Greenwald would be unlikely to be prosecuted with any charges but may suffer from losing his identity as an American. Currently Greenwald lives in Rio De Janeiro with his partner, he spends most of his time playing with his dogs and reads blogs online. With the help of the internet, it allows his job to become more convenient. Although

Greenwald has immigrated to Brazil early 2001, if he loses his American identity, it is unlikely that he is allowed into American territory. Is it worth it? Greenwald would not be able to see his family that supported him and also his friends. It may seem that the friendship and family are minor aspects but these are very simple core necessities of a human being. Greenwald demonstrates the essential trait of a reporter of responsibility. Reporters should be responsible to letting the public acknowledging what is happening in the world. With the whistleblower’s information, Greenwald shows the courage of reporting while knowing that the he could potentially lose his identity as an American. Jobs are very crucial for every person, as it provides us money to support for ourselves and families, injecting cash for us to spend on our wants and needs. The words that an employee would never want to hear coming out from their employer’s mouth would be “YOU’RE FIRED!” Glenn Greenwald mentions in the interview that he was uncertain to whether believe Snowden when communicating with him through encrypted email. He did not know if he it was fake or it was a scam. His risk of continuing the case would affect his job in the Guardian. Based on what he had before meeting with Snowden and conducting the interview, he does not have absolute idea whether the information that he reports is genuine.. However, when the dates start to get closer, and when he first met Snowden, he said that he felt nervous due to the fact that Snowden

shows him the data that he has with five of his computers that he carried with him, even when viewing the data, he was asked by Snowden to cover the camera with red cloth to avoid surveillance from the government. Greenwald could have believed that it was a scam and not decide to work with Snowden and continued to earn his salary. He decided to take the risk of trusting and believe Snowden. If the research he and his team collected and after all that months of planning results be all fake,, he would suffer from major criticism from the public and ultimately harm his career as a journalist and his future in the journalism industry. Is it worth all the nuisance just to get more attention and profit? Many would argue that Greenwald and his team’s reports are mainly for their crave towards fame and fortune. Greenwald has been awarded numerous times for his success in promoting independent journalism with most of his works becoming New York Times best seller and he has been around many universities giving speeches to students studying in law and journalism. If he wanted fame, he would never do this type of article as it involves with too many risks, he would have just stayed in America to continue writing books and publishing articles of other types in his house rather than living in a remote area in Brazil. The motive of becoming popular and wealthy are aspects that cannot be used to accuse Greenwald for this article. Taking risks is very important as we progress in life’s journey, we all have to improve and become better than ourselves. The main step to become better than yesterday is through the process of taking risks. Albert Einstein once said “A ship is always safe at the shore - but that is NOT what it is built for .” This is one of the quotes in where I have on my wall and it motivates me to take risks and try to become a better person than I was yesterday. I believe that Greenwald is a brave writer as he does a thorough interview with Snowden and explains in his articles on how “Prism” works and what the Federal government is doing in the surveillance program. In today’s world, being a reporter is very stressful and they often worry about researching topics that

may not be true. Especially Greenwald is American, I believe that he his a courageous person as he reported something that would affect their own country. With the potential of facing death, sacrificing his American identity and to losing his career as a journalist shows that Greenwald is a clear example of a risk taking figure. Kalam Cosmological Argument Essay

...The Kalam Cosmological Argument: (KCA) Of the things debated in society, perhaps nothing is more hotly contested than the existence of a God. Over the course of time there have been many arguments made from many different angles. For example, an argument in favor of existence is the teleological argument also known as “fine tuning,” or the “argument from design” argues that the universe is so organized as to suggest the necessity of a designer. (1) Likewise there are many arguments against the existence of a God; perhaps the most well know is the “problem of evil” which argues if there is an omniscient, omnipotent and morally perfect being, he (or she) would know where evil is, have the power to destroy it, and being morally perfect would...

...Jordan Gruschke English 112 Mr. Sexton 4/30/12 Collaborative Classical Argument Essay Our group made the decision to argue on the likeliness of life to exist outside of earth. We choose to argue from the pro side of the topic. Our claim is that it is likely that life exists outside of earth. Our biggest thought when doing this debate was that we wanted to go with the strategy that went to the side of bacteria life existing and not so much that little green men exist. We had brainstormed many reasons but we narrowed it down to our best four. Our first reason is that the scientific community out there all believes that it is likely for life to exist. So with so many smart people agreeing with us we thought it would be necessary to include this in our argument. Our second reason is that there have been a lot of recent discoveries of planets that have the means to harbor life. So with all these planets that can harbor life that increases the likeliness that life does exist outside earth. The third reason we came up with is just more in depth of the planets that can harbor life. We picked two of the most popular planets which are Kepler 22b and Europa. They are the best choices for a place to have life exist. Our fourth and final reason was our strongest one. It is the evidence that we found from mars, like the meteorite that had evidence of bacteria life. We believe that the opposing views are going to mainly be that we are crazy. They are going to think that we are going...

...is found. It's almost a certainty that unless someone has not shared a toilet with the opposite sex, one has undoubtedly debated at least to a certain extent whether or not the toilet seat should be down or up. Which is it? This research shows that the toilet was made with a lid for a reason. Gentleman, that reason is not for a back rest while doing the deed. It’s actually made to close. If everyone, not just men, would put the seat down and close the lid, we would have such a smaller issue on our hands. That smaller issue would be making this a habit. Hopefully, readers can benefit from this essay and gain some useful knowledge regarding this issue to say the least. There are many resources that explain the pros and cons of leaving the toilet seat in the downward position. For example, an article written by Martin A. Andresen, “Up or Down? An Efficiency-based Argument for Optimal Toilet Seat Placement”. Andresen theorizes that there is an actual mathematical equation that can be used to determine efficiency. Andreson concluded, “…results clearly show that if the number of females is greater than or equal to the number of males the optimal placement of the toilet seat is down” (Andresen). After reading Andreson’s commentary, while this theory is somewhat valid, coming up with an actual equation for solving this problem is a bit much. For example: (Andreson) “This ratio is bounded by zero and unity. If the TSR is greater than 0.50, the optimal toilet seat placement...

...Argument Essay By Joseph Peterson Ivy Tech Community College Argument Essay Guns or no guns? That seems to be a big question these days. A lot of the reason behind the discussion is mass shootings that occur so often now days. Other forms of violence with guns happen, but the most controversy over guns usually occurs after a mass shooting. The reason for that is that mass shootings tend to be more mindless and more innocent people are hurt or killed in mass shootings. The thought of what if I or one of my families was in one of these mass shootings always hit home afterwards, and so we think of ways to prevent them from happening again. I have a question though is guns really the issue or is it really another issue? I think that the anti-gun activists use every shooting as just another door to support their views against guns. I can see why they do since guns are used to the shootings, but taking away a normal citizens right to own a gun and defend themselves against crimes is not smart. These shootings are not done by normal citizens and could still occur even if they took away guns from the normal citizens who just want protection. Police are not always there when you need them and sometimes you need to protect yourself first as we can see from different crimes that take place today. What would stop a mass shooter from buying guns illegally? Do they not think that they could? Drugs are illegal but still sold and used everywhere every minute. One argument...

...Argument Essay Animal Testing Twenty million animals are killed annually as a result of animal testing. Approximately fifteen million of these deaths can be attributed to medical research. The belief that animal testing is necessary in the development of medical treatments, prescription drugs, cures and vaccines, is a common misconception; test results are often inaccurate therefore using animals for medical testing is not only cruel to the animals but it’s also dangerous for humans. There are a rising number of scientists, doctors and healthcare professionals who are extremely opposed to medical testing on animals. It is believed among this group that results obtained from animal experiments cannot be safely applied to humans because 83% of substances are metabolized differently by animals than humans. Records show that less than 2% of illnesses found in humans exist in the animal kingdom; that is until scientists put them there. Most drugs available today were originally tested on animals; however, four out of ten patients who take prescription drugs will suffer from severe side effects. Over two million people are hospitalized annually because of prescription drug side effects and hundreds of thousands die. There are also the many prescription drugs that are recalled after they’ve been on the market for several years; this is a direct result of inadequate testing before FDA approval. Pharmaceutical companies claim to have positive results from animal testing;...

...We Are Detrimentally Dependent on Technology October 13, 2010 Abstract Technology comes in many forms and no aspect of our lives is untouched by some form of technology or another. Technology is defined as “the practical application of science to commerce or industry”. Technological development into present day has been meteoric to say the least. With the advancements of nearly every aspect of human life having some tie with technology, one might start to see a synergistic relationship between humans and technology. However, while some would believe this relationship has been beneficial for us, we believe there have been detrimental effects from our growing dependence on technology. 1 Introduction No one can argue against the fact that the human race has made enormous bounds in advancements in the last century. From developments in technology which affect society, how we communicate, the field of medicine and education. Technology has not left any aspects of our lives untouched. There will be no shortage of people who would argue that the technological advancements of the 21st century have been beneficial to society. While beneficial, we believe that, as a society, we must realise the magnitude of our dependence on technology and the ramifications if it were to be taken away from us. This paper argues that humans have formed a detrimental symbiotic relationship with technology in its many forms. This paper will investigate the changes that technology has affected, and show that...

...I’m stuck! That is the simple explanation for wanting to pursue an MBA degree. I received my undergraduate degree in accounting and since graduating I have gained eight years of experience within the accounting and finance industry. Within this industry I have financial accounting experience and experience in financial analysis from working at a CPA firm, the public sector for the State of Alabama, a mid-sized insurance company headquartered here in Montgomery, AL, and now within the banking industry. With the exception of the CPA firm where I started out as entry-level, all of these places of employment I am and was a mid-level employee, where I am now stuck. To move out of the mid-level hole and into a position of management or at least a senior-level position within my current organization, an MBA is a requirement. Also, in today’s economic climate an MBA degree also creates a level of job security. An MBA degree lets people know that you have an increased knowledge of business acumen, which, therefore makes you a valuable asset to your company or organization. An MBA opens the doors of opportunity, such as being considered for advancement within my current organization, a position of higher pay and status with another company or laying the foundation to be a successful entrepreneur. Through my experience I have only worked in one environment in which an MBA degree wasn’t a requirement for advancement. As a staff accountant for the State of Alabama, they have a...

...Controversies About Death Penalty Death penalty is the most severe punishment that can be given to a person in response to a crime committed. Throughout history human kind has dealt with its social behavior with rigor and benevolence and a sense of right or wrong. This topic generates one of the most controversial debates around the world because there are people pro as well as against it. In the United States, opinions are just as strong between the followers and the protesters of the capital punishment (White). As a topic of general interest the factors that should be taking into consideration when talking about death penalty are: religion, morality, justice and revenge. Conservatives believe that in some cases the maximum punishment is required in order to deter crime (Nice). Going back in history, centuries ago when the English colonies arrived to America death penalty was the only way to punish criminals for their offense. They had the same sentence either for theft or for murder (Banner 5). United States inherited the English way to condemn criminals following their regulations but rules have change since then. In the present, death penalty is only given to who commit the gravest crime. However, crime rates have not altered. Conservatives strongly believe that death penalty is the best way to fight against crime rates showing everyone the consequences a person have to overcome if is responsible for a felony. But this is not a valid point because even many centuries ago...

...Amanda Guzman July 23, 2015 EWS 19 President’s Authority The article “Presidential Power” by Christina L. Lyons represents a dispute that Congress is having with President Obama believing that he is overstepping his authority with executive power. To begin with, Republicans are making accusations saying that Obama is accusing Obama for abusing the Constitution and Democrats are defending him by saying he’s taking action because Congress is taking long to respond. Many presidents have overstepped the boundaries of using executive power to accomplish policy goals. But the debate over executive power has been building up over the years and has led a conflict between Republicans and Democrats. Between the Judicial, Legislative and Executive branch there has been a great gridlock with no one coming to an agreement. Due to the gridlock the conflict between Republicans and Presidential power has been a battle. Eventually, both sides will have to come to some sort of a compromise, whether a law comes into place of presidents having a limit to executive power. (Lyons, 2015, p. 219) During President Obama’s presidency, he has exceeded his power of enforcing executive orders over 210 times. That’s an average of 33 executive orders a year issued by President Obama alone. Executive orders are unbreakable legal orders given by the President to Federal Administrative Agencies. This power allows the president to create laws or determine how existing laws should be carried out. President...

...The benefits that a multicultural education would offer to a country like the United States are immense. It would bring instruction that suits the cultures of different races to the educational system. Many may ask why multicultural education should be supported, the difference it would make, and others question how it could be taught. What kids learn in their class when it comes to their interaction with other individuals will be reflected in the future, which is why we should be concerned of teaching our children to interact with other children today. The road to progress and success requires change. But why support the integration of multiculturalism? Having a system that supports multicultural education will encourage children to strive for more. It will reduce prejudice and empower social culture. Supporting diversity will help us remove racism and prejudice from our society. It has always been our purpose as a nation to become “One under God,” however that only means that we embrace others into our country. We should teach our young ones to embrace our culture and those of others as well because that’s what distinguishes our nation. The United States is a nation of opportunity for all; it’s a land of freedom. For people of other countries, this country represents a brighter future. We could really nurture a spirit of prosperity if we allow diversity into our lives. It has even been said that engineering companies enjoy hiring liberal arts majors because...

...Automobile radically changed the human society. Now, it is hard to imagine to live without automobiles. Though some people may criticise the problems automobile has caused, I believe that automobile has improved our lives. First, autobobile connected distanced cities. Before autobobile was invented, people who travel had to depend on animals, for example, horses, or walk for long. It was not possible to travel between distanced cities, but such a long journey was very hard and time-consuming. After automobile became popular, people can travel long way in much less time. As travel becomes easier, the relative distance between two cities shrinks. Thus, each city can rely on the other city's production and the economy will develope. Second, automobile can make the economy more efficient. It may be true that automobile has caused serious environmental pollution, but the expanded economy has increased production. In many countries, there are plenty of natural resources, but not suit for agriculture. Before automobile became popular, natural resources was consumed in inefficient ways and the residents who live in such area starved though they may have gold. The development of trade has made it possible to exchange natural resources and food. Consequently, many people have become wealthier than before. Third, automobile can provide fair opportunities for many people. In ancient era, civilization tended to emerge in rich areas. In desert, or mountains, people were required to...

...Writing 102 Section 97 11 April 2013 Casinos: The Golden Nugget of the Gulf Coast It was all started in June of 1990 when the state of Mississippi legislature legalized dockside gambling along the Mississippi Gulf Coast with the Mississippi Gaming Control Act. Then, in late August of 1992, the Isle of Capri casino’s first riverboats docked at the east end of Biloxi Beach in Biloxi, Mississippi to take in passengers to gamble on shore and since then Gulf Coast has never looked back. However, not everyone in 1990 was in favor of the newly enacted Gaming Control Act especially along the Gulf Coast. Many of the coastal resident families and others living near these towns have been living there for generations and were not ready to see their “sleepy town” transformed into “the nation’s hottest new gambling hub” (Myerson). Many of these residents and public officials believed legalizing gaming would promote “crime, higher rates of divorce, and poverty from personal bankruptcy” from residents spending their life savings (Myerson). Now more than twenty years later the exact opposite of oppositionist’s future predictions have occurred and casinos have been the greatest thing to happen to the Mississippi Gulf Coast since the seafood industry began. The coastal casinos do countless great things such as lower property taxes, fund public school projects, give back millions of dollars to charity, greatly enhanced the tourism market, drives the economical activity, and much more...

...Mercedes Davis English 091 March 11, 2011 An Open Reader Reading is the foundation of our life. Without reading we would be like lost souls in the world. Everywhere we go and anything we do we have to read; at work, school, driving, etc. People who do not know how to read are limited in life, they cant get a job, and the everyday life would be a struggle. Someone who knows how to read has no restrictions, the sky is the limit for them, they are our lawyers, doctors, and teachers. In Moody’s article “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading”, he expressed his love for the unpopular selections, and how he learned how to dissect his readings. Moody also states that nobody will ever be able to tell him how to read, and also believes there is no right or wrong way to read. In Moody’s article “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Ready”, he explains his high school and college reading experiences. He tells us how his, Mr. Buxton, taught him how to analyze Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Mr. Buxton did not give him his own interpretation and made sure Moody noticed how Shakespeare repeated somethings to help Moody come to a conclusion. In eleventh grade Moody’s teacher Mr. Flanders encouraged Moody to develop his own relationship with the Gospels, in his religious studies. Then Moody continued onto college where he read Umberto Eco’s Role of the Reader, where he was introduced to Eco’s “Open Text” philosophy. He also read some of the great European and Latin Americans articles. After his...

...There are many successful people that have left their mark in the world. These people started with having a goal, and a determination that the goal would come true. For example, Jack Canfield, author of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul books, is a man that decided to change the direction of his thoughts. Canfield made a choice to have positive thoughts of success and to not focus on the negative thoughts. Canfield decided what he wanted to become in his life. He set his mind and thoughts on nothing else, but that goal. The greatest teachers that have ever lived have told people of the power of positive thinking: poets from William Shakespeare, Robert Browning, and William Blake to great thinkers including Socrates, Plato, Sir Isaac Newton and Pythagoras. Greatness does not limit itself to a certain kind of person. There are many facts through out history that support the idea of having positive thoughts, and with those thoughts, bring positive results back to the thinker. It is very clear that - Positive Thinking will lead to having positive results. The Law of Attraction states like attracts like. In the book The Secret, Rhonda Byrne describes The Law of Attraction. Byrne breaks down the law’s principles in more detail and explains the power of positive thinking. Byrne states, “Everything that’s coming into your life you are attracting into your life.
