Marlene’s Laryngectomy

Laryngectomy according to ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) is “the removal of the voice box (larynx) from the neck, usually because of cancer”. Throat cancer may occur by “heavy smoking and drinking, poor eating habits-not enough vitamins from fruits and vegetables, weakened immune system, exposure to chemicals and acid reflux” (ASHA, 2015).
A Laryngectomy causes different impacts in the person that goes through this procedure. And influences one’s person life in family, social, career, financial among others contexts. Marlene’s story explains how she went through this procedure and how one of the causes of throat cancer, smoking, affected her life.
