Argumentative Essay On Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a problem that has been plaguing societies for more than centuries. It has being statistically proven that the biggest targets of domestic abuse are women; with 85% of the victims in the world being women while the remaining 15% being men. The ad derives from The Salvation Army, an international charitable organisation that focuses on “doing the most good.” The ad was released in early march by the South African branch of The Salvation Army, when the viral sensation, #thedress, sparked a massive online debate. The viral phenomenon is a picture of a dress that caused some people to perceive the dress as black and blue or white and gold. The Salvation Army took the opportunity of the hype of the trivial conversation to promote awareness on …show more content…
In this case, the “black and blue” that the heading is mentioning are the bruises of the victims of violence. The reason “it so hard to see” them is because women tend to hide their bruises for their own safety. "The only illusion is if you think it was her choice,” raises attention to the common misconception that it is the woman’s fault that they are experiencing domestic violence. People tend to think that if a woman is experiencing abuse they should leave the household immediately but they do not consider the severity of their situation and how difficult it is for them to leave. By mentioning the statistic “One in six women are victims of abuse,” it helps to raise awareness to the audience and to picture how common this illegal act is. “Stop abuse against women." This is a powerful concise sentence that helps to get The Salvation Army’s message across. Under in a smaller font is written the number of a domestic abuse hotline in Cape Town, which the advertisement is directing people who are seeking for help to call

Capital Puneshment

...Rafat Sawaged ENG 090 04/21/2014 Argumentative Essay First Draft Capital Punishment “Death Penalty” For the worst crimes, life without parole is better, for many reasons. I’m against the death penalty not because of sympathy for criminals but because it isn’t effective in reducing crime, prolongs the anguish of families of murder victims, costs a whole lot more than life in prison, and, worst of all, risks executions of innocent people.  The death penalty keeps the population safe by providing a deterrent for crime. Without the death penalty, the consequences for committing murder are not as feared. According to an essay by Professor Jeffrey A. Fagan, “executions [do] not only deter murders” (Fagan 1) with the death penalty in use, many criminals would think twice about committing a crime. Without the fear of capital punishment, many would-be criminals become actual criminals. “The death penalty diverts resources from genuine crime control measures. Spending money on the death penalty system means: * Reducing the resources available for crime prevention, mental health treatment, education and rehabilitation, meaningful victims' services, and drug treatment programs. * Diverting it from existing components of the criminal justice system, such as prosecutions of drug crimes, domestic violence, and child abuse. * Emergency services, creating jobs, and police & crime prevention were the three highest rated priorities for use of fiscal resources. ...

Domestice Violence in the Lives of Black Women in the U.S.

...Vazaskia V. Crockrell-Caldwell Prof. Margaret Griesse T SOC 455: Sociology of Gender 8 December 2014 Domestic Violence in the Lives of Black Women in the U.S. This essay will explore the cause and impact of domestic violence in the lives of black women in the U.S. It will provide general information, such as the definition of domestic violence, statistics, and resources to help survivors leave domestic violence relationships. Following the review of the literature I identify areas which need further research. Since I can remember black women have been characterized as mean and argumentative, but also strong and self-sacrificing for their families. Black families on TV were always portrayed as single mother households. In my community there was also a reoccurring reality of domestic violence against women. This was is in direct contrast to stereotypes I heard about white women, who were portrayed as weak, frail and needing to be protected. Examples include June Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver and the Brady Bunch. But what justified the brutality of domestic violence against black women then and now? In 2011, black females were murdered at a rate more than two and a half times higher than white females: 2.61 per 100,000 versus 0.99 per 100,000. [1] In the U.S. domestic violence against black women has escalated. In 2010, Marissa Alexander an African American woman shot a warning shot at the wall in order to scare Rico Gray, her estranged, abusive...

Let's Take a Stand

...Shenice Rolle English 120/16 Dr. Craig Smith Informal Text- based Argumentative Essay Let’s Take a Stand Nicholas D. Kristoff stated, “In the nineteenth century, the central moral challenge was slavery. In the twentieth century, it was the battle against totalitarianism. We believe that in this century the paramount moral challenge will be the struggle for gender equality around the world.” Traditionally, men have always been known as the superior gender, while women were seen as inferior. One would think that since time has progressed and ways of thinking has evolved, the world would now be a place where men and women have equal rights; however, this is not the case. While in some countries women have been granted the same opportunities as men, there are still countries where women have little or no rights at all. Some of these countries include Afghanistan, Iraq, Nepal, Sudan and Pakistan. Consequently, women who reside in these countries run the risk of being punished or even killed, if they were to stand up for their rights. A wise author once said “Great leaders are often defined not by their beliefs, but by how they react when those beliefs are tested to the limit.” Despite the fact that she lived in Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai demonstrated her bravery by fearlessly petitioning for women’s rights and girl’s education. Yousafzai is a sixteen year old girl who was shot by the Taliban for being an advocate for girl’s education. Yousafzai survived the shooting and continues...

Male Nurses

...and finally, relatively low salaries. But these strands lead to new questions, wider causes which have nothing to do with social yarn. These new questions have to do with rhetoric and the enduring association of nursing with “women’s work” and “femininity.” Matthew has the audacity to ask how the rhetoric of femininity actually functions. How and why are we compelled to accept images and tropes as ‘normal’ or ‘natural’ when they are anything but normal and natural? Is it possible that the rhetoric of nursing is responsible for the shortage? Or perhaps it is the rhetoric of femininity and masculinity as such? But how did such a crime take place, right under our noses, when so many of us never noticed that an injustice ever took place? This essay is brilliant and provocative because it will not stop until the crime...

History of Indian Sub Continent

...analytical survey of the subcontinent's modern history. The dynamic and complex relationships between changing forms of political power and religious identities, economic transformations, and social and cultural change are studied in the period from 1757 to 2007. In normal circumstances students will be given 6 supervisions in groups of 1 or 2. Key themes and brief overview: The paper begins by examining the rise of British power in the context of economic developments indigenous to southern Asia; it analyses the role played by Indian polities and social groups in the expansion of the East India Company's activities. It tracks the emergence of modern intelligentsias and their definitions of what constituted proper religious, public and domestic behaviour. The paper places these changes in the context of the concurrent decline of Indian handicrafts and the impact of British revenue arrangements on rural society, and explores India's place in the...

...11 Position Papers I f you like to argue, you will enjoy writing position papers and argument essays. The purpose of a position paper or argument essay is to explain both sides of a controversy and then argue for one side over the other. This two-sided approach is what makes position papers and argument essays different from commentaries (Chapter 10). A commentary usually only expresses the author’s personal opinion about a current issue or event. A position paper or argument essay explains both sides and discusses why one is stronger or better than the other. Your goal is to fairly explain your side and your opponents’ side of the issue, while highlighting the differences between these opposing views. You need to use solid reasoning and factual evidence to persuade your readers that your view is more valid or advantageous than your opponents’ view. In college, your professors will ask you to write position papers and argument essays to show that you understand both sides of an issue and can support one side or the other. In the workplace, corporate position papers are used to argue for or against business strategies or alternatives. The ability to argue effectively is a useful skill that will help you throughout your life. 221 CHAPTER AT–A–GLANCE Position Papers This diagram shows two basic organizations for a position paper, but other arrangements of these sections will work too. ...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...
