The world revolves around money. However, people take this to the extreme and lets it control their lives. In the 1900’s children were forced into the workforce as slaves of green paper. Their childhood—taken away from them without warning—compels Florence Kelley, a United States social worker and reformer, to bring back their happiness. Her success with improving child labor laws and women’s working conditions makes her an exceptional speaker for the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in Philadelphia. “Child” associates with education, toys, happiness, purity,netc. While “work” correlates with factories, labor, business, but mostly, adults. In lines 18-22, she says “Tonight while we sleep, several thousands of little girls will be working in textile mills, all night through…” which demonstrates the restlessness of child labor. These children spend the time they could be sleeping working. The average child from the age of six to thirteen is recommended nine to eleven hours of sleep. No one wants to deprive a child of his or her adolescence, especially if it is someone they know. Another line says “...boys increase in ranks of the breadwinners…” when usually, the father or male head of the house should be the one providing income for the family. By allowing kids starting at the age of six to work, the audience feels at fault for these inappropriate working hours.
