Argumentative Essay: Should America Be Bombed Japan?

There are many reasons as to whether America should’ve bombed Japan. First, the Japanese acted horrifically and barbaric towards the U.S. The U.S. wanted to retaliate from Pearl Harbor, our mindset on the moral of “eye for an eye”. They also caused the Bataan Death March, where 78,000 Americans and Filipinos surrendered and then were treated inhumanely in a prison camp despite promises from Japanese commanders. Another reason that we should’ve bombed is that it saved about a million American lives. If America decided against the bomb then there would have been 2 D-Day style invasions, called Operation Downfall, costing about 1,200,000 soldiers to result in causalities and 261,000 fatalities. The military was exhausted and they were weary to fight. Also, the Japanese Field Marshall threatened to execute allied prisoners of war if we went through with Operation Downfall. The bomb was also necessary to shorten the war. Less than 2 weeks after the first bomb dropped, Imperial Japan surrendered on August 15.
Contrary to the beliefs and reasons as to why we should’ve bombed, there are also many reasons as to why we should not have dropped them. First of all, the bombs were made only for defense. America used the bomb as a deterrent against Germany and other …show more content…
I personally believe that bombing Japan was necessary if we wanted to end the war for good. Although hundreds of thousands lost their lives, we prevented millions of lives from meeting their death if we had continued to fight this war against Japan. They did not know surrender and were willing to fight to the death, or commit gyokusai. Then again, I believe that dropping these bombs showed the world how much America prioritizes themselves before anybody else. In all honestly, I don’t know if I support the bombing or not, we destroyed beautiful cities and took so many innocent lives, but it was for a reasonable

...Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

...In Other Words This book addresses the need for a systematic approach to the training of translators and provides an explicit syllabus which reflects some of the main intricacies involved in rendering a text from one language into another. It explores the relevance of some of the key areas of modern linguistic theory and illustrates how an understanding of these key areas can guide and inform at least some of the decisions that translators have to make. It draws on insights from current research in such areas as lexical studies, text linguistics and pragmatics to maintain a constant link between language, translation, and the social and cultural environment in which both language and translation operate. In Other Words examines various areas of language, ranging from the meaning of single words and expressions to grammatical categories and cultural contexts. Firmly grounded in modern linguistic theory, the book starts at a simple level and grows in complexity by widening its focus gradually. The author explains with clarity and precision the concepts and theoretical positions explored within each chapter and relates these to authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages, although a knowledge of English is all that is required to understand the examples presented. Each chapter ends with a series of practical exercises which provide the translator with an opportunity to test the relevance of the issues discussed. This combination of theoretical discussion and...
