...Guns or No Guns Three hundred and twenty-three students have died in documented school shootings over the past 15 years, making it the by far the largest cause of violent deaths in school. A very highly debated topic corresponding with this issue is how to stop it, any many people believe that arming teachers is the way to do it. Many also believe that arming teachers will only make things worse, and that’s what Allen Rostron tries to get across, to parents of teens, in his article Arming Teachers Will Not Reduce School Violence, published in 2012. In this article, Rostron uses many appeals, along with his reputation to provide the reader with statistics to back up his reasoning and to show his knowledge on the topic to persuade readers that arming teachers is a bad idea in the fight against school violence. Though Rostron uses many appeals throughout his writing to persuade us to his side of view, his reputation precedes him. He is a Professor of Law at the University of Missouri Kansas City and has published multiple articles on gun policy and whether or not guns should be used and how they should be used. ...Gun control is a complex and divisive issue in America. People who are in favor of gun control foresee no violence whatsoever if guns were banned. But is that a realistic thought? I will carefully analyze details discussing how an actual gun ban would result. Would a gun ban make the world safer to live in? Would it make the world more dangerous? Prompted by horrific elementary school shooting, President Barack Obama tasked his administration with creating concrete proposals to reduce gun violence that has plagued the country. The President includes both legislative proposals that would need to be acted on by Congress and executive actions he can perform on his own. Many of the executive actions involve the president directing agencies to do a better job of sharing information. Proposed congressional actions include, but are not limited to: (1) Requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales, including those by private sellers that currently are exempt; (2) Reinstating and strengthening the ban on assault weapons that was in place from 1994 to 2004; (3) Limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds; (4) Financing programs to train more police officers, first responders and school officials on how to respond to active armed attacks; and (5) Providing financing to expand mental health programs for young people. These names strike fear in to anyone who was alive to hear about them as they happened. These were mass shootings in very public places, schools. Between the years of 1996-2013 a total of 84 attackers committed 77 attacks on schools in 15 countries killing 502 students and teachers and wounding 496 others worldwide. (See Table 1) It is my belief that these attacks were orchestrated upon the most helpless in our society in order to incite mass fear and chaos!
