...What does art mean to me? When I think of art, my culture is the first thing that comes to mind. I see our awesome designs, our baskets that hold g’ima:w (medicine) and prayers. I think of carving hazel sticks for our stick games. My people have been playing this game since the beginning of time. I think of our creation stories, and all of the pictures we have telling them. There is just so much that comes to mind, being that our whole essence is derived from art. As a Hupa tribal member, my whole life has been centered on art. From the way we dance to the way we make baskets. Art is the way we express our feelings, our surroundings, and our history. That is why we are so emotionally attached to our regalia. From when it‘s started to when it’s finished. Every single element stands for a prayer or medicine, so when the regalia is worn in ceremony, the prayers and medicine contribute to the dance. Then there are our stories, we use art to tell stories, and forever have recorded our history this way. Many cultures around the world use art to express emotions, record history, or to just enhance the communities. I consider myself an artist. ...The exhibit that I chose was in my home town of Delphos, OH. The Delphos Area Art Gallery (DAAG) had a photography exhibit. Most of the art work was anonymous which I found interesting to no be able to put a face or name to the work of art. ...The Birth of Venus Roaming through the many halls and floors of the metropolitan museum of art is an interesting and eye opening experience, especially for someone unexposed to the beauty of art. Although there were many beautiful paintings and sculptures waiting to be uncovered by wandering eyes, one painting in particular captured my attention like no other the instant I happened upon it. As if it were entrancing me and calling me towards it, the vibrant colors and elegant aura of Alexandre Cabanel’s “Birth of Venus” resonated with me, and that was the moment I knew which piece of art had chosen me. Art was my way to express myself and say things I was not able to. Because with art everything is up to the maker, it lets kids experience a measure of success. ...only learning from a textbook, during this semester I’ve learned how to appreciate art in diverse of ways and projects such as having presentations, individual reports, painting, sculpture-making and architecture scrapbook. ...Since my childhood, art has been my direction and an essential part of my life, from designing and making the sets and costumes for plays to making my own jewelries. ...Great Lakes Art Fair For the second art encounter I attended the 2014 Great Lakes Art Fair in Novi, Michigan. It was a short 1 hour drive for a great experience that I will tell my family about for weeks to come. This art fair reminds me of the Black Swamp festival that is in Bowling Green every year. There was art vendors as far as the eye could see. I enjoyed my time there looking at all different kinds of art, from the more contemporary styles, to classical works of art that looked as if they were taken from museum floors. The show consists of 200 artist displays, and includes free access to decorated gardens and a student art display as well. One of my favorite aspects of the festival was just the amount of art there was there. It was interesting seeing artists make pottery by hand, and showing off their tapestries that some of which took years to complete. It was really amazing to see these things, and to see how close and similar their techniques were, as to what we learned in class. Another thing that amazed me at the fair was the glassblowing demonstrators. Glass blowing has always been something that interests me. It was so cool seeing these people take molten globs of glass, and turning them into amazing bowls, vases and abstract works of art.
