Arthur Seaforth Blackburn was born on 25 of November 1892 at Woodville, South Australia. Arthur Blackburn was the youngest child of Rev. Thomas Blackburn and his second wife Margaret Harriette Stewart, née Browne. He was educated at Poultney Grammar and finished his study at the University of Adelaide. Arthur Seaforth Blackburn died on 24th of November 1960 from natural causes.
Blackburn enlisted in the 10th Battalion AIF (Australian Imperial Force) as a Private soldier shortly after the outbreak of War in August 1914. He was member of the “10th Battalion” the Adelaide Rifles and went to camp at the Morphettville racecourse. After his training, he landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Gallipoli is a peninsula, which is located on the northwest coast of the gulf of Turkey and Dardanelles. Battle of Gallipoli or as known as the Dardanelles Campaign, was an unsuccessful attempt by the Allied Powers to control the sea route from Europe to Russia during World War I. Troops from New Zealand, Britain and France joined the same boat as the Australians. The Australians landed at Anzac Cove on the 25th of April 1915, they established a weak foothold on the steep slopes above the beach. During the early days of the Gallipoli campaign, the Turks tried to drive the allied troops off the peninsula. There was unsuccessful allied attempts to break through the Australian attacks on Lone pine and the Nek and all attempts ended in failure for both sides.
