THESIS
Research has shown that sexual harassment has been a growing issue in the workplace. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has developed guidelines to address this type of harassment. The EEOC considers sexual harassment to be a form of sex discrimination, defining it as any pressure to perform acts in order to receive pay, promotion, or other opportunity. The second part of the EEOC’s definition refers to any actions purposely taken with the intent of creating a hostile work environment.
The researchers in this study focus their efforts on the difference in perceptions about sexual harassment. The focus being what is considered sexual harassment and what is not as well as the factors that influence such a perception. Factors such as gender, experience with sexual harassment, and employee relationships with regards to position are examined. The thesis would be supported if the study concludes that those who have been victims of sexual harassment are more likely to view arguable sexually oriented acts in the workplace as more harassing. The thesis would also be supported if the women in the workplace were more likely to see those acts as sexual harassment especially considering manager and subordinate relationships.
METHODS
Researchers asked each student from a business research class at a large mid-Atlantic university to recruit 10 volunteers to anonymously complete a questionnaire that asks for their take on how far certain behaviors must go to be considered

They focused on anxiety, depression and anger which, according to Lin, are triggers for substance abuse (2004, pg. 1114). They set out to talk and interview forty three potential participants who were recommended by their counselors from a residential drug rehabilitation center. This population was chosen due to the rigid course of treatment they were already receiving from the treatment facility in response to the personal calamity being experiences by the client. These were the most severe cases since they usually experienced repeated relapses, petty crimes and a lower motivation for change. While conducting the research what they found was not really surprising but rather normal for this group of clients. The participation started to fall off and by the end of the research they had fallen to less than half of the original commitment...

...RES/351 Article Critique Article Critique Carl Bubeck University Phoenix Abstract The critique of "Attitudes Towards Tax Evasion: A Demographic Study of the Netherlands" will show if the article and the study followed, or failed to follow, the criteria for good research, as described in Chapter 1. I will describe if the writer’s conclusions were warranted and which were not based on the information in the article and its supporting documents. Article Critique In the article "Attitudes Towards Tax Evasion: A Demographic Study of the Netherlands" Ross and McGee attempt to say that the new studies about the attitudes of tax evasion have better support and research about those attitudes. The authors use a variety of historic studies and a recent study to support their theory. Depending on the reason people feel it is ok to avoid paying taxes. Furthermore, the author offers the reader with the appropriate tools to analyze the type and cost relate to training. Training is the answer…but what was the question? Article Critique. “The point of training isn’t to create an “information dump”- it’s to change the way people behave” (Rosner, 1999); this is an accurate description on how people perceive training as an “information dump” in my opinion. Too often training is perceived as a punishment rather than opportunity to grow; I have experience this reaction as a trainee and as an instructor in my organization. In this article the author Bob Rosner outlines training situations and provides examples of the “good” and the “bad” of training outcomes and how important is to have experienced trainers available for training in order to, gather and prepare an effective training section and, to main maintain an appropriate audience’s attention. It is important to mention and the particularly of the article that is outlined in 20 questions with an opening summary that introduce the importance of training to the reader, perhaps with the intention of changing one’s approach to training not the necessity of training. ...Michelle Ortiz Article Critique #1 FIN 340-Dr. Tucker Obama: All US troops out of Iraq by end of year According to www.msnbc.com, article posted on October 21, 2011, President Barack Obama announced on Friday that all U.S. troops will leave Iraq by the end of the year. The president made the announcement at a White House briefing following a private video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister. “As promised the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year. After nearly nine years, the war in Iraq will be over,” Obama stated. More than 4,400 American military members have been killed, and another 2,000 wounded since the U.S. invaded Iraq in March 2003. The two countries have been negotiating over whether the United States would leave behind up to several thousand military trainers after year-end, or if all remaining troops would depart as planned by Dec. 31. The main sticking point has been legal immunity for any U.S. forces that remain. Although this war is questionable, it is fortunate that our United States Army is there to do their duties, and I feel that it is time for our troops to come home. I currently have a brother that is deployed and is scheduled to come back home in December and it really starts to become a question when our troops begin to question this war. This decision is supported by me and I am very thankful to have my brother coming home in December of this...

...Article Critique Com 200: Interpersonal Communication Instructor: Bonnie Stiemke Joyce Duren February 6, 2013 He loves me, he loves me not is a phrase that I often pondered in my young adult life and still do to this day. What is it that first attracts another person to another person? And what is it about that other person that makes you feel as though they are that one special person that you are destined to be with forever your soul mate? In this paper I will examine the views of several people who feel that how we communicate with one another has a direct effect on the nature of our relationships. Let me first begin by giving a definition for communication that I found in our textbook titled “Making Connections: Understanding Interpersonal Communications.” Sole, 2011, chapter 1, section 1.3 defines communication as” A process by which we share ideas or information with other people.” With that said let’s look at the views of one a graduate student by the name of Molly Ireland and psychologist James Pennebaker both of the University of Texas at Austin who reported in an article written by Bruce Bower for Science news titled” Shared Talking Styles herald new and lasting romances” that “ Conversation partners related use of function words such as pronouns, articles, conjunctions, prepositions and negations- augers well for mutual romantic interest and stable relationships.” Ireland and her colleague proposed in an upcoming Psychological Science article that “Unconscious...

First we must define what human development means in the context of this article. It is defined as being “complemented by a number of conceptual frameworks that share similar underlying motivations, but have different emphases, and add value in different ways. It relates human development to other key concepts, showing the synergies between them and also articulating the distinctive contribution of the human development framework. ...Rethinking Marketing Article Critique In the article “Rethinking Marketing” by Rust, Morrman, and Bhalla (2010), the authors discuss how most companies today have access to technology that allows them to frequently interact with customers and that instead of focusing on building brands companies must focus on building personal relationships. The article points out how technology has helped companies learn about their customers buying patterns; but that instead of just “marketing products they need to cultivate customers” (Rust et al., 2010). It mentions how some companies such as USSA and Tesco, a leading UK retailer, accomplish this by having managers spend some time working in the stores or call centers to understand customer’s concerns and show employees how serious management is about customer interaction. According to Rust, Moorman and Bhalla (2010), the most dramatic change companies are implementing in their efforts to shift from Product-Manager Driven to Customer-Manager Driven is the reinvention of their marketing departments to customer departments. It mentions that Chief Customer Officers have increased in numbers worldwide from 30 in 2003 to more than 300 today. (Rust et al.,2010). In addition to that, companies need to pay less attention to current sales and more to the customer lifetime value because a company could have good sales; but, poor prospects for the future. The authors conclude the article emphasizing that these changes need to come from the top down;...

...Article Critique MGMT Jacobson, Janet (2009). “Quality club teaches today’s learners to become tomorrow’s leaders.” A group of young students gather to study quality tools such as affinity diagrams, run charts, and histograms. Koality Kid Club at Hunter Ridge School won the 2008 Academic excellence award and serves 700 kids from kindergarten to sixth grade with knowledge and understanding of leadership skills they will need to become the next leaders of our country. These kids are handpicked judged by the qualities of responsibility, good listening skills, comfortable speaking in front of peers, and cooperation with students and adults. These are the qualities of a good leader and deserve to be treated in an honor program to help build on these leadership skills. This has been a great program not only for the kids but the teachers as well. It gives the students the extra edge they need to make it in the real world and it also gives the teachers a sense of purpose in these kids’ lives. In the program, the teachers go over simple tools such as a run chart, affinity diagram, and fishbone diagram. They relate these simple tools to everyday situations at home such as organizing a birthday party. It not only prepares them for later on in their lives but also helps them exercise these skills in the present. This is a great program for a gifted child that deserves to be treated like the leaders that they have the potential to be. The only question I have regarding...

...Mohamed Mahmoud ENG 108 Professor Jamie Bonell 06 October 2015 Article Critique “An Oil Spill’s Aftermath,” written by Beth Mole is about North America’s largest oil spill noted to be visible from space. The spill occurred following an explosion of a Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico by the oil company BP. Killing 11 rig workers, this was the beginning of an 87-day eruption totaling of about 5 million barrels of oil and hundreds of thousands of metric tons of gas gushing from the well measuring 1500 meters below sea level, known as the Mocondo. Millions of dollars have been provided for research by the company responsible for the explosion and over $30 million provided by the federal government. The rest of the article gives information and statements about the research conducted. There are still many unclear and unanswered questions, scientists and researchers are under plenty of pressure to find the answers to better prepare for the “inevitable” next spill considering there are still thousands of active oil and gas pumps operating in the gulf and plenty more throughout the entire sea. Beth Mole did a great job of writing an informative article stating nothing more than the honest facts about the oil spill. Throughout the article there were no obvious personal opinions about the situation at hand and information was basically given in quotation of documented statements. Every fact was citable, and every statement was quotable. What made it obvious that she...

...Article Critique   Article Critique This paper summarizes and analyzes an article by Ruble and Turner (2000), entitled “A Systemic Analysis of the Dynamics and Organization of Urban Street Gangs.” The authors discuss how street gangs, which are highly complex, open and ongoing social systems with structures, processes and functionality, can be compared to family systems using a systemic and holistic perspective in order to provide professionals with a better understanding and more effective intervention. They discuss many of the motivations that individuals have to join gangs such as looking for closeness, cohesion, and acceptability as well as obtaining a sense of esteem, stability and connectedness that they are unable to obtain from other systems. After describing the demographics and different types of street gangs, Ruble and Turner (2000), apply the “same concepts that are used to describe family systems, such as hierarchies, subsystems and suprasystems, entropy and negentropy, boundaries, communication, and homeostatsis (Broderick, 1990; Minuchin, 1974; Walsh, 1982), to street gangs. They conclude that because gangs function based on an interrelatedness that connects every aspect of gang life together within a complex web of interactions, researchers and professional who seek to provide effective intervention programs must aim to approach street gangs from a holistic and systematic perspective. ...Article Critique Julie Cobia COM 200 Interpersonal Communication Instructor: Jacey Coy December 23, 2014 The article “Close relationship Sometimes Mask Poor Communication” In my opinion is an excellent example of how we as couples communicate. We believe that the other person knows us well and we expect our spouses to understand or read in between the lines certain things we communicate to them. Since we have been together for so long, it should be too difficult. One spouse should have a perfect understanding of what the other one is trying to relay. It is very surprising to know that the statistics showed that strangers understand us just as equally as our spouses. My mind was blown away, by this finding. It is so true that with our busy lifestyles we tend to lose sight on what the other person is trying to convey to us. I have had many miscommunication incidents but I will limit myself and share this one incident. I had made arrangements with my Son to pick me up from work on Tuesday. I assumed he heard me and acknowledged the fact that I was going to be waiting on him that day. I figured I didn’t need to remind him that morning since we had spoken about this before. As you might have guessed, I ended up waiting for my son that Tuesday for fifteen minutes. I had several thoughts in regards to his tardiness and assumed that he either was stuck in traffic, stopped to get gas, or had stopped for milk or...

...Summary of Article: Leaders tend to think that once you designed a strategy it can be performed and succeeded. A strategy should be implemented to make it worth. Thinking differently and doing things differently to get different outcome. When crafting strategy is complete, leaders think that things are now simpler. It is the role of the leader to design strategy and assist in implementation, rather than to delegate it. Many leaders undermine the implementation which will affects negatively on the strategy due to poor execution. When a new strategy is made, people respond in four different ways, which are indifference, resistance, disbelief and support. Three groups concerning responds to new strategy were made; 20 % of the first respondents being saboteurs (resister of new change), 60% Groupies (fence sitters) and lastly Mavericks (those who welcome change). Leaders come up with very good strategies but they may be implemented wrongly, hence they will not be successful. When the strategies are launched, there is no motivation drive to those who are supposed to implement the strategies. At times there is no clear communication to the subordinates who are who should perform the execution of strategy. Effective communication should fill the gap between planner and those who will implement. Planning should be done on a short term of about two to three years. There is need for strategy review; the strategies should be broken into small measurable objectives. Critique According...

York Liberty University AUTISM, ATTACHMENT AND PARENTING 2 Abstract This paper examines Rutgers et al.’s research article regarding autism, attachment and parenting. It is a comparison of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Mental Retardation (MR), Language Disorder (LD), and non-clinical children. This article addressed the issues of autism, attachment security, and parenting among the clinical and non-clinical groups. The author’s attachment security research was conducted using a variety of both screening questionnaires, and several parental self-report questionnaires assessing their parenting styles, parental efficacy, experiences of daily hassles, social support and psychological problems. Through the use of these questionnaires, observations by pediatric psychologists, and a follow-up at approximately four years of age, it was demonstrated that the children with ASD were rated less securely attached than both other clinical and non-clinical groups. Also, the parents of children with ASD reported a less authoritative parenting style and felt they received less social support than the parents of non-clinical children. This paper will delve deeper into their research and consider the results as it applies to the discipline. AUTISM, ATTACHMENT AND PARENTING 3 Article Critique on Autism, Attachment and Parenting ...
