That’s a Crown Question, Bro This article concentrates on baseball player Miguel Cabrera, the third baseman for the Detroit Tigers. The article states how Cabrera’s batting in the 2012 season wins him what is known as the Triple Crown, by leading the American League in batting average, home runs and runs batted. In Cabrera’s last 32 games of the season, he batted .347, hit 12 homeruns and drove in 32 runs. In mid August, Cabrera sprained his right ankle. It took him a week to tell Detroit medical staff, which did not surprise them, since they know Cabrera would not consider been in the disabled list. Despite of his injury, he continued playing and only missed one game. Back when Cabrera was a 20-year old, nine years ago, he played his first World Series with the Florida Marlins. Scouts and teammates saw him, back then, not only as a player, but a fantasy. They saw him as a potential player been able to play any position. Now, he is back in the Fall Classic as something more meaningful: the player he always wanted to be. Cabrera wants to know the pitcher’s basic tendencies. He can solve any pitcher. He does not want to play for stats, nor want fans or reporters elevating him above his teammates. But he also knows how talented he is. Cabrera was introduced to baseball at a very young age. His mother, Gregoria, was a softball legend in Venezuela, and his father, Miguel Sr., played professional baseball there. Like any other person, he has problems and has been through two incidents that have change his public image. Is image, however, is starting to change, and not just because of the Triple Crown. He is a lighter, happier player. “You feel that he’s made a big turnaround in his life” says Tigers assistant general manager (Rosenberg, 2012).
“It’s like something pushed me to go in the field and play with my heart. You don’t

...Running head: UNV-501: ARTICLE SUMMARY UNV-501: Article Summary Melissa Osborne Grand Canyon University Title: UNV-5: Article Summary This article titled “Read-only participants: a case for student communication in online classes” discussed the importance of communication in online courses as well as the reasons why students succeed or fail in these online courses. To obtain answers to the concerns previously listed, an 8 week study of students in an online class was conducted. This study consisted of monitoring online communication and classroom activity among students with different backgrounds with geographical location and age being two of the main contributing factors. From this study, results of both success and failure were discovered and documented. From the aspect of success, the following results were found: First, classes that had online discussion helped students that would normally be introverts in a traditional class, to be active in discussions. Second, this type of class helped to improve the learning of students by creating questions and answers (in the form of posts) of high critical thinking skills. Third, online discussions that were developed created a community of support and healthy interaction (L. Nagel, et al., 2007). Fourth, the facilitator (professor) that was very interactive with his class became a great asset to the online class because he provided feedback and affirmations to the students through posted replies. Because...

...Summary of “A Cell-Based Systems Biology Assessment of Human Blood to Monitor Immune Responses after Influenza Vaccination The goal of this study was to create methods and define protocols that may be used in future systems vaccinology studies. Having these tools at the ready can lend a hand in investigating the various reactions of different cell types to the immune response generated after vaccination. Scientists used influenza vaccinations in this study. Among the questions addressed the most important was if it was possible to develop these protocols and methods to study immune response to vaccinations in various individuals. One question addressed was how to “investigate the contribution of individual cell types to the immune response after vaccination.” (Hoek) Another question was is there any changes in protein-coding or non-coding RNA transcripts after vaccination. To answer their questions, the scientists established an efficient way to purify human T and B cells, natural killer (NK) cells, myeloid dendritic cells, monocytes and neutrophils from venous blood. Having this method not only helps conclude a hypothesis, but can be used in the future to help other scientists conduct their experiment. Using this high dimensional molecular approach, scientists can use systems biology to identify changes in the blood caused by vaccinations or other perturbations. Their results reveal that RNA and protein expression profiles from each individual sorted cell type differ from...

...Article Summary With online education becoming more widely accepted and available around the world, many people wonder about the differences between traditional classrooms and virtual classrooms. One difference is student participation and communication. In a traditional classroom setting, some students are able to earn credit by just attending class, not necessarily participating in class discussions. What do those types of students look like in an online environment? Does their lack of participation affect the learning process for others? How does class participation equate to student success? With this case study, the authors sought to answer those questions exactly. More particularly, the study examined online students who fail to fully engage but are still able to show educational progress, referred to as read-only participants or ROPs (Nagel, Blignaut, & Cronje, 2009). The authors wanted to understand the connection between participation and communication and course success. They organized an eight-week online Masters course using WebCT as the learning management system (LMS). Twenty-two middle-aged students, from all over the world, participated in the course. Students were required to participate through class discussion via forum posts, group assignments, and other research. A collaboration rubric was created by the students as a group assignment and used by their peers to measure their group participation. After the course, the facilitators requested...

...Third Party Reimbursement and Risk Management Article Summary Outline A. Summary 1. Introduction 2. Studies B. Personal Reaction 1. What I learned 2. What I think C. Application in classroom setting 1. The HIPPA Act 2. Ethics as the core A Risk management gives rise to various policies, which focus on making patients and clients secure since they can access care in diverse hospitals. Indeed, the exposure of patients to various risks during the treatment process affects their livelihood. The article indicates that most patients and legal representatives are not genuine since they sue the health care providers to their own advantage. Consequently, physicians acknowledge issues, which are not to be reimbursed. Apparently, attitudes focusing on revenge by patients create a croaky affiliation amidst the facilities, lawyers and patients. Attributable to the friction, medical lawsuits have become expensive. Studies equally exemplify that the patients ultimately become the beneficiaries of the lawsuits. The patients, being the determinants of the claim, necessitate the utilization of funds as compensation. An additional issue pertains to reduced government involvement in the damages yet its judges play a major role in making decisions. During litigation process, more time is spent. It equally emerges that court judgments register the premier amount of recompense in comparison to cases settled locally...

...Summary of Articles Bibliography Mallon, G. P. (2006). Busting Out of the Child Welfare Closet: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender-Affirming Approaches. Child Welfare, 115-122. The subject of working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) children, teens and their families is virtually unrecognized by the child welfare system. In order to make changes and human service professionals to start effectively assist this population, significant changes must be made. The focus must be to embrace the child and his lifestyle and show the family that they can function to the best of their ability. The first step is acceptance and to recognize that this effects all areas of child welfare services. This will not occur unless the case manager takes them out of the “heterocentric” world. Policies and laws must change. The government must take a step back and realize that this issue is not going away and ignoring it by worrying about the implications of funding programs to support this alternative lifestyle, will only make this population for more alienated. Agencies working with the LGBT community should look at the work those areas such as New York and San Francisco, where the youth are sheltered by local laws and acceptance of their lifestyle is tolerated. Information alone will not make a transformation. Acceptance and training must infiltrate all areas of the agency. The youth and their families must be met with understanding and guidance.
