Art is what gives the community its personality. In order for the piece of art to stay where it is it has to be supported by the agency where it is located and also by the community in which it resides. Agencies where art is found as well as the general public provide the greatest support for art in the community. I live in southern Maryland which is about 30 minutes from Washington, DC. In my community there are a lot of art museums and sculptures in various parts of DC. The art ranges from African art all the way to different types of performance art. The art in my community is very well supported by the agencies and the general public. The agencies that own the art whether it is inside the building or outside, hire people to maintain the work. This includes keeping the sculptures clean and in good condition and also cleaning of the area around where the art is kept. Each agency does fundraisers and events to show off their art. The purpose of the fundraisers is to make sure the art is kept in good condition so they can keep it available for the public to enjoy. They also do events at the museums to bring more public attention to the art they have. The citizens support the art by going to the museum and paying the entrance fees. ...took the summer of 2014 out to do community service. The mere thought of it sounded unappealing to me. Though after experiencing the fullness of service, my ideologies on it have vastly changed and I believe that it is excellent that the prestigious institution of Saint John's College requires hours of community service to graduate, as no one should be allowed to graduate without experience this amazing time. I would like to express about my thoughts about the service project in full; encompassing where I was, who I was with, and what I was able to do. I was at the Art Centre helping kids. The placement was suitable for me. I am quite proficient in the art of visual arts; therefore I decided to help with art. The kids appreciated my presence and I loved being with them a lot. I taught them various origami folds, and also some art techniques. I enjoyed my placement a lot, and with this in mind, it is clear to say that I loved community service. I feel as if I taught the kids in a way that seemed fun and entertaining for them. The placement also carried the scent of familiarity as I had been to the Art Centre a lot for Visual Art classes. The kids there really opened my heart as they were so fun to be with, despite some being very, very annoying. Though overall, I really loved my community service placement. Step Shows showcase multiple teams who stomp, clap, dance, shout, and ignite the audience. I have been viewing Step Shows since my first year in high school. I frequent Step Shows due to the electrifying energy that the step teams display. These teams work hard to perfect their artwork of expression. Some of them even employ professional dancers to assist with the stage shows. Just like painters or sculptors, step teams provide messages and creative expression in every performance. Stepping is a growing art form and an important part of our country’s artistic and cultural heritage. In stepping, the body is used as an instrument. The body motion and movement is part of the story. The step teams maneuver in synchronized progressions to create intricate rhythms through a plethora of footsteps, claps and the spoken word (Degregory PHD, 2015). The winner of the Step Show approached the stage wearing clown outfits including colorful masked faces. The clown outfits mislead the audience to expect a clumsy, unorganized show. We received the exact opposite. The winning step team was well organized and choreographed, regardless of their clown suits. They brought the crowd to their feet with “call and response” chants. To view, many of them had much meaning, with a lot of history and culture in the mix within it. The exhibition was well organized; the paintings were arranged in a meticulous order that evokes interest in each piece as you move from one painting to the other. The works of art were of an abstract nature mostly depicting the essence of microscopic life that exists in nature and what seems like the representation of the developmental stages of sprouting life form. In some of her painting you could see the obvious depiction of nature with landscapes and trees. The artist was able to capture this transformation of nature with the simple strokes of vertical lines and colored pencils on mostly plain white sheets of paper. I believe the goal of the artist was for each viewer to have a connection to the paintings ("Suzan Cofer: Draw Near," 2012). Art on the Square is held in the down town location of the city that I reside in for more than 7 of my life. Art Square is a very art learning display from Art painting to Music concerts. This event began back in 2002 and has been a light in the massive sky of great arts locations ever since. It has always been one of my wives favorite plays so it ended up being what I wanted us to go see. Wicked is a new twist on the classic tale of the Wizard of Oz. It is a play adaptation of Gregory Maguire's book of the same name. In this retelling, the “wicked” witch is actually the heroine of the story, who starts out as the outcast and is coached by Glinda, her big sister. She begins to be popular, which is expressed in a musical number that was one of my wife's favorite songs in the play. However, she realizes her real desire is not to fall in love and pursue the wizard/witch love story, but to be free. During the play the musical numbers played a huge part in telling the story as well as the movements of the characters. With song it was easy to tell what each character was feeling and meaning to express. The songs also cause you to feel similar feelings to the characters. Much of this has come with the sacrifice of morality in order to have the most “shock factor”. This brings about the question, can theatre maintain Christian principles without hindering communication and the development of art, especially in a modern society? With a deep analysis on different aspects of ethics in theatre such as community, technology, duty, and propaganda it is very clear that in order to be true theatre, it must always chose art over morality. Although most theatres find it hard to follow Christian philosophy, they do not have to sacrifice the practice of being ethical in order to remain effective communicators. The idea behind ethics is developing an idea of what is “right” and what is “wrong” within a community and an individual. Ethics differ in different communities because they are based on the values of each community. This is why it is hard to have true Christian ethics in theatre.
