The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter Plot Overview

...Plot Overview The first chapter of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter introduces us to John Singer and Spiros Antonapoulos, two good friends who live together in a town in the Deep South and who are both deaf-mutes. Antonapoulos works in his cousin's fruit store, and Singer works as a silver engraver in a jewelry shop. They spend ten years living together in this way. One day Antonapoulos gets sick, and even after he recovers he is a changed man. He begins stealing and urinating on buildings, and exhibiting other erratic behavior. Finally, Antonapoulos's cousin sends him to a mental asylum, although Singer would rather have Antonapoulos stay with him. After Antonapoulos leaves, Singer moves into a local boarding house in town run by a family named the Kellys. The narrator then introduces us to Biff Brannon, the proprietor of the New York Café, the establishment in town where Singer now eats all his meals. Biff is lounging on the counter watching a new patron named Jake Blount, as the constantly drunk Jake is intriguing. Blount goes over and sits with Singer and begins talking to him as though the two are good friends. Then Singer leaves. Once Jake realizes in his drunken stupor that Singer has left, he goes into an alley and begins beating his head and fists against a brick wall until he is bruised and bloody. The police bring Jake back to the café, and Singer volunteers to let the drunk stay the night with him. The narrative shifts to the perspective of Mick Kelly, the young teenage...

...seemed to aid in the success of their collaborations as each complemented the other's writing style. Later Harrison also became a composer, and his works most often reflected his interest in Eastern music and mystical thought. The Beatles, along with Bob Dylan, are considered responsible for renewing an interest in the power of words to the listening audience of the sixties. From the beginning, their lyrics were fresh and devoid of cliché. As they matured, their songs increased in complexity, and they moved from boy/girl romantic themes to subjects infrequently used in popular songs. Lennon's "Norwegian Wood," for instance, dealt with a clandestine affair, and McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby" painted a touching picture of the life and death of a lonely...

The Introduction of Rock Music (Beatles)

...The Introduction Of Rock Music Rock music began in the United States in 1950’s, but it has influenced and in turn been shaped by a broad field of cultures and musical traditions, including gospel music, the blues, country-and-western music, classical music, folk music, electronic music, and the popular music of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition to its use as a broad designation, the term rock music commonly refers to music styles after 1959 predominantly influenced by white musicians. There is basic agreement that rock is a form of music with a strong beat, but it is difficult to be much more explicit. The Collins Cobuild English Dictionary, based on a vast database of British usage, suggests that rock is a kind of music with simple tunes and a very strong beat that is played and sung, usually loudly, by a small group of people with electric guitars and drums, but there are so many exceptions to this description that it is practically useless. Other major rock-music styles include rock and roll, the first genre of the music; and rhythm-and-blues music (R&B), influenced mainly by black American musicians. Each of these major genres encompasses a variety of substyles, such as heavy metal, punk, alternative, and grunge. While innovations in rock music have often occurred in regional centers such as New York City; Kingston, Jamaica; and Liverpool, England, the influence of rock music is now felt worldwide. Popular Rock Groups The Beatles The Beatles...

Popular Culture

...Impact of the Beetles on Popular Culture The Beatles, the band responsible for social change in post war England, and the entire world. A band creating music to transcend all cultures , and in my opinion the band not only forced social change in the world, but they saved the United States, from going in a direction that could only be described as ridiculous. Just prior to the Beetles coming on the scene, the number one single at the end of 1963 was a song called Dominique, by the Singing Nun ( http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2053 ). What were people thinking? All I can say is thank god for the Beetles. We do not know what may have happened if Beetles hadn’t intervened. The Beatles upstaged the celebrity world of the 1950s with their political views, their youthful thinking, and their projected attitude of not having a care in the world. The Beatles had a passion to get their music out to the masses, and had established themselves as a more down to earth group than their peers. They were approachable where stars like Elvis Presley were not. The Beatles continuously proved themselves to their fans, and were willing to go to whatever lengths were necessary in order to please them. School girls were infatuated with the group keeping pictures of their favorite band member in their lockers. Parents described them as a weird looking group, and they were shocked by their mop top haircuts. Parents had coined it as the rebellion of long hair. Teen boys were kicked out of school...

...built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act and producer George Martin enhanced their musical potential. They gained popularity in the United Kingdom after their first single, "Love Me Do", became a modest hit in late 1962. They acquired the nickname the "Fab Four" as Beatlemania grew in Britain over the following year, and by early 1964 they had become international stars, leading the "British Invasion" into the United States pop market. From 1965 on, the Beatles produced what many critics consider their finest material, including the innovative and widely influential albums Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966), Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), The Beatles (1968), and Abbey Road (1969). After their break-up in 1970, they each enjoyed successful musical careers. Lennon died in 1980 after having been shot by a deranged former fan, and Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001. McCartney and Starr remain active. The Beatles have had more number-one albums on the British charts and sold more singles in the UK than any...

The Beatles Studio Techniques

...The studio techniques of the Beatles: how four lads from Liverpool and a radio producer from the BBC changed sound recording forever. The Beatle’s music has been recognized as influential and innovative in many ways, none more so than their innovations and experiments in the studio and with sound recording with help of George Martin. This essay will discuss the studio techniques of the Beatles and how they changed the course of sound recording forever. The Beatles started to experiment in their recording techniques as early as 1964, having achieved incredible commercial, financial and critical success by this stage they were then essentially given free range in the recording studio, this gave them the unique opportunity for experimentation. With the help of George Martin that’s exactly what they did. Prior to the nineteen sixties and the Beatle’s experiments in the studio, sound recording was not a fully refined art that is there were none of the widely used seemingly natural conventions we are familiar with today. A good example of this is the 1966 song Taxman where drums are all panned to left; this might seem like nothing out of the ordinary now but in that time were defining the nature of sound recording. Much of the Beatle’s enthusiasm and desire to create new sound-scapes stemmed from their recreational drug use in particular trying to re-create sonically and lyrically their experiences of the drug LSD. This of course had to do with changing social order, the emergence...

Beatles

...Alfredo Catalan MUL1010 Dr. Teresa Mitchell November 1, 2015 The Beatles The Beatles was an English pop/rock band founded in 1961. It was composed of John Lennon (Liverpool, 1940-Nueva York, 1980), Paul McCartney (Liverpool, 1942), George Harrison (Liverpool, 1943) and Ringo Starr (Liverpool, 1940). It is hard to tell the exact date on which the band was created, but it was in the second half of the 1950s decade when John Lennon and his friend Peter Shotton (who left after some time) created a band named the Quarrymen. In 1957, Paul McCartney joined the group, and not long after George Harrison joined as well. The Quarryman started playing in different places in Liverpool, and that is when the bass artist, Stuart Sutcliffe, joined the group. The name of the group changed a lot, from Johnny and the Moon dogs to animal names that were trending at that time. The first tour the band did was to Germany, where they performed in a local bar called Kaiserkeller. However, the tour did not last a lot because George Harrison was expelled from the country because he was not of age. Later, the bass artist Sutcliffe died, leaving the Beatles with its final members, John Lennon, Ringo Star, and Paul McCartney. In 1962, the music producer Brian Epstein heard the band performing at a bar in Liverpool called The Cavern and without hesitating, decided to hire them. After being rejected by numerous recording companies, the Beatles finally got a shot with Parlophone. The owner of the...

John Lennon- an Inspiration

..."I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I'm one of those people." I truly am one of those people. I was born in 1993, thirteen years after John Lennon was murdered, but he has had an impact impacted me greatly on the way I choose to live my life. I decided at a young age to never conform to other people's views. My mother will not would not admit it, but she had a plan of how she wanted me to act and look around her friends. On the night of Halloween in 1995, my mother attempted to dress me in a Raggedy Anne costume. Instead of being forced into wearing something I had no interest in wearing, I threw a fit. I screamed and threw my fists until I got to wear what I wanted to, which was nothing but my birthday suit. From adolescence to the present I have tried my hardest to be an individual and keep away from stereotypes. I try to let people know that it is okay to be an individual by making a fool out of myself John Lennon sat in bed for a week to inspire peace and I went streaking through my camp to inspire individualism. I may not have made a worldwide impact, but when I explained to people why I had gone streaking, a few younger campers decided to be fearless and participate in the talent show. (This part is a bit jumpy. I understand you're trying to make a new point, but it doesn't flow too well)Friendship has always meant a great...

Rolling Stones: The Rolling Stones

...rising to fame at this time, almost simultaneously, the Rolling Stones graciously accepted the title and carried it to the top along with them, taking no breaks from the spotlight. The Rolling Stones left a lasting impression on the music industry as well as on most, if not all, of the people that have had the pleasure of enjoying their music, including myself. I was first captivated by the Stones as a kid riding along in the backseat, listening to whatever tunes my parents happened to select as the days’ radio station. The Rolling Stones had an obvious monopoly on airtime and had clearly earned it. They brought a new groove to music long before my time, however, that same groove they possessed so long ago was able to pull me in and steal my heart. I had become a megafan. I was head over heels in love with everything about this dangerous, rebellious, not so attractive, British Rock ‘n’ Roll band. The Stones release of Beast of Burden in 1978 was the the first song I had ever heard by the band, but in a much later year. The blues and soul fused style of this song is what demanded my attention. I was immediately infatuated with the song and could not get enough of the Stones. I then listened to hit after hit by the Rolling Stones and fell in love over and over again.  As I grew older, I began to realize the complete impact the Stones had made on modern day bands as well as modern day music. When they were first starting off, they were portrayed as bad boys that were dangerous and too...

Once Oldham noticed them, it only took a week for them to produce their first cover “Come On” This was Oldham's first record ever produced, therefore it was rushed and poorly made; the fans loved it anyway and it climbed up the British charts. Gender Selection

...Running head: GENDER SELECTION Is Gender Selection of a Fetus Ethical? Emily Myer Grand Canyon University NRS 437V 08.21.2010 Gender Selection It is a commonly known fact that countries such as China and India prize their male children far above their females. Investigations have also shown that many parents in these countries have been illegally aborting these less desirable female children as a means of gender selection. As a result, it is estimated that there will be nearly 60 million more men of marriageable age in China than women by the year 2050. (The Economist, 2011) A recent technological development published in the Journal of the American Medical Association report that, “a new maternal blood test can determine a fetus’ sex as early as seven weeks into a pregnancy” (Ravitsky, 2011). Is it possible that this technology, in and of itself, can pose an ethical threat to humanity? Some are already saying that it does. One such critic is Vardit Ravitsky, an assistant professor in the bioethics program at the University of Montreal. She is also the editor of “The Penn Center Guide to Bioethics”. In her opinion piece published on CNN’s website, she asserts that this new technology is safer, less invasive, and more accurate than the options that are currently available to the public, making it much easier to use for non-medical purposes such as gender selection (Ravitsky, 2011). For the purpose of this assignment, the ethical implications of gender selection...
