Ozone (O3) Depletion The ozone is a molecule that contains three oxygen atoms and has a strong odor. It is also blue in color. This is much different than the oxygen that we breathe in that it is odorless and colorless. Since around the 1970's there has been a severe problem happening in our Earth's stratosphere. The Earth's ozone layer has been in a great decline of about four percent in total volume observed since then. There are two different but related issues that are happening from mankind which are the steady loss of the ozone in the stratosphere and another loss of the ozone near the Polar Regions called the ozone holes. The way we are finding out how the ozone is depleting is through many observations of computer models and of the atmosphere. We can also introduce chemicals and other substance reactions in a laboratory environment to study what it does to an atmospherically setup like the earths. Through all of these studies we have found that certain chemicals and there are several in particular that increase the rate of depletion in the ozone but the biggest leader in the depletion of the ozone is Chlorofluorocarbons or CFC's and we will get into that later. An example to show how we are losing the ozone layer in our troposphere is a river. A river usually flows at the same level just as the ozone is moving around but remains at the same level. Once mankind starting introducing these chemicals and other elements into the atmosphere it is lowing the level of ozone before it can be remade again. This is

where we are seeing a loss in our ozone and a rise in projects to slow down the emission of CFC's and other things harmful to the ozone.
