Question #1: How did your life change because of the war? Answer: Due to the war, I had no job to fall back to so I had to make a decision of what to do with my career; I could either go to finish my final year of highschool then go to college to become a teacher, I could learn how to teach our sacred language to our children, or I could learn more about history so that I could understand and help our children understand and remind them to never forget our language and culture. Also, because of the war I began to have horrible night terrors; I saw men dying and I could hear all of the awful noises of war along with the enemy soldiers coming at me and screaming.
Question #2: What kept you motivated during the war?

We would communicate relaying secret messages through radios and morse code. The code allowed us to relay secret messages quickly and efficiently over long distances. Without our secret code, we would not have been able to report enemy sightings or when we would attack as fast as we were able to. Before our Navajo based code, the Japanese were able to break every code the American forces used in war. Since the Navajo language was the most difficult to learn, none of the Japanese were able to understand our code.
Question #4: How did Navajo Marines get treated in the military? Answer: As a Navajo Marine I was sometimes mistaken for an enemy soldier, so I was always with Smitty or Georgia Boy so that I would not get attacked by a fellow leatherneck. Other than the fact that some of us had the complexion of the enemy, we were treated the same as the other Marines while we were on the battlefields. Although, once I returned home I could not tell anyone that I was a code talker and I was allowed to share minimal amounts of my experiences in war. Unlike Smitty and Georgia Boy, I was refused help when I asked if I could have a house built for me and my family on our sacred reserve.
Question #5: How were you treated after the war being a retired

Dr Ossian Sweet Chapter Summaries

...1. Jim Crowe laws were never really well-known in the northern parts of the U.S, like Detroit, Michigan or Chicago, Illinois in the early 1920s. These laws were to stop segregation in the southern states of the U.S. Even though segregation is not enforced in these northern residential areas, there was always a division between the whites and the blacks. During WWI, the blacks started coming to the neighborhoods of Paradise Valley in Detroit, just passed 8 mile; regardless of the segregation laws or not. Doctor Ossian Sweet was an African American man who was motivated to change the ways in Detroit. He studied at a college in Ohio and then attended Howard University where he received a medical degree specializing in gynecology. He then moved to Detroit because of the different job opportunities. Dr. Sweet did not realize what he was getting himself into while purchasing a home in a white American neighborhood. White Americans did not want African Americans living in the same residential areas. If so, the whites would leave or start violence in the area. Dr. Sweet and his family moved into a house on September 8th, 1925. He knew there would be some sort of violence as soon as they arrived at their little house on the corner of Charlevoix and Garland and knew that little protection from the police of Detroit was all that they would receive. By the 2nd night...

Women in Combat

...WOMEN IN COMBAT AN INDISPENSIBLE ARMY 21 COMPONENT OR A SIMPLE CASE OF EQUAL OPPORTUNITY? Your mission remains fixed, determined, inviolable – it is to win our wars. Everything else in your professional career is but corollary to this vital dedication. All other public purposes … will find others for their accomplishment; but you are the ones who are trained to fight; yours is the profession to arms. General Douglas A. MacArthur to the West Point Graduating Class of 1962 INTRODUCTION Like the United States military, the infusion of women into the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) was announced with great fanfare and the proclamation of the politically-correct notion that “women have as much a role to play in the Nation’s defence as the men”. Thankfully, unlike the US military, the inclusion of women into SAF did not result in controversies and scandals that the US military faced in recent years as exemplified in the Tailhook[1] and Aberdeen[2] scandals. Amidst continued declining birth rates and greater economic opportunities, the participation of women in the SAF has been generally accepted as an inexorable development within the organisation without much ado, trusting that the authorities have performed the necessary analysis. Is this naturally the case? Are there larger issues that we need to grapple with, given our unique circumstances, noting that up till today, the US military is still debating on the wisdom of opening up military career opportunities...
