Written Assignment #4: Jazz- Rock Fusion

1. The order of solos in this piece is: Zawinul, Shorter, Zawinul. Provide counter numbers for the beginnings and ends of these solos. Zawinul’s solo lasted from 0:19 - 0:46. Shorter’s started at 0:46 and went to 1:03. Then Zawinul had a solo after, starting at 1:03 going to 1:43. 2. Describe the keyboard and piano accompaniment during Shorter's solo. How would you compare/contrast the solo style of Shorter in Birdland with his tenor solo in Miles Davis E.S.P. ? The keyboard and piano during Shorter’s solo is very dynamic. There are lower keys played with the piano and higher more “edgy” notes played with the keyboard. Miles Davis’ solo in E.S.P. is slower and not as fun and exciting as Shorter’s in Birdland. 3. How would you compare/contrast the solo style of Zawinul in Birdland with that of Herbie Hancock in E.S.P. ? Zawinul in Birdland is actually slower than Herbie Hancock’s solo in E.S.P. There is more constancy in Hancock’s solo, whereas there is more freedom it seems in Zawinul’s solo. 4. Do you detect any ties between these jazz-rock fusion soloists and hard bop or free jazz?

There are some similarities between all types of jazz, I feel. Because of the use of similar instruments the sounds and pitches are similar in each jazz song. However, jazz-rock fusion is like no jazz I’ve ever heard before. I have come accustomed to listening to “old school” jazz, and I actually quite like the diversity that this fusion...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...

La Singularidad

...NOTE: This PDF document has a handy set of “bookmarks” for it, which are accessible by pressing the Bookmarks tab on the left side of this window. ***************************************************** We are the last. The last generation to be unaugmented. The last generation to be intellectually alone. The last generation to be limited by our bodies. We are the first. The first generation to be augmented. The first generation to be intellectually together. The first generation to be limited only by our imaginations. We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them. Ielts

Can You Keep a Secret

...Olivia Heywood for all their generous advice. And hugest gratitude as always to Linda Evans, Patrick Plonkington-Smythe, Araminta Whitley and Celia Hayley, my boys and the board. ONE Of course I have secrets. Of course I do. Everyone has a secret. It's completely normal. I'm sure I don't have any more than anybody else. I'm not talking about big, earth-shattering secrets. Not the-president- is-planning-to-bomb-Japan-and-only-Will-Smith-can-save-the-world type secrets. Just normal, everyday little secrets. Like for example, here are a few random secrets of mine, off the top of my head: 1. My Kate Spade bag is a fake. 2. I love sweet sherry, the least cool drink in the universe. 3. I have no idea what NATO stands for. Or even what it is. 4. I weigh 9 stone 3. Not 8 stone 3, like my boyfriend Connor thinks. (Although in my defence, I was planning to go on a diet when I told him that. And to be fair, it is only one number different.) 5. I've always thought Connor looks a bit like Ken. As in Barbie and Ken. 6. Sometimes, when we're right in the middle of passionate sex, I suddenly want to laugh. 7. I lost my virginity in the spare bedroom with Danny Nussbaum, while Mum and Dad were downstairs watching Ben Hur. 8. I've already drunk the wine that Dad told me to lay down for twenty years. 9. Sammy the goldfish at home isn't the same goldfish that Mum and Dad gave me to look after when they went to Egypt. 10. When my colleague Artemis really annoys me, I feed her plant......
