Antitrust Practices and Market Power

...its search power to drive traffic to its own properties over rival sites and services. After a nearly twenty month high-profile investigation, the federal government announced on January 3, 2013, that its dropping an “exhaustive” probe into Google as it found no evidence the company was abusing its search power. Google was investigated under violating the Sherman antitrust act. “The definitive antitrust statute, passed by Congress in 1890, that prohibits monopolies or unreasonable combinations of companies to restrict or in any way control interstate commerce. Specifically outlawed is two or more persons engaging in monopolistic practices, such as price fixing, although it does not outlaw price-fixing per se. It was amended in 1914 by the Clayton Act, which outlaws interlocking directorates and deals with acquisitions that aim to restrain or eliminate competition. (Your Dictionary Law)” “For example, one element of a duty-to-deal claim under the Sherman Act is proving that Google’s treatment of rival websites harms consumers; even the cleverest economist would be stumped with that assignment. (Singer, 2012)” The Sherman Act prohibits monopolies, attempts to monopolize, or conspiracies to monopolize. A monopoly is a form of market structure where only one or very few companies dominate the total sales of a particular product or service, such as Google. A big competitor is Yahoo. The public suffers under a monopolistic market because it does not have...

Anittrust Laws

...Business Abstract In this assignment, we will review two scenarios of business practices and how these practices influence consumers. We will also explore antitrust laws and the fact that they were established to protect consumers and businesses from anti-competitive business practices. The foundation of a dynamic economy is free and open trade. The benefits of lower prices and higher quality products or services is done through aggressive competition. To maintain this dynamic economy the United States Congress established and passed the first antitrust law. This law was named the Sherman Act of 1890. Two other antitrust laws have been passed since. In 1914 the Federal Trade Commission Act was created by the Federal Trade Commission and the Clayton Act. These laws are still in effect. The antitrust laws were created to promote competition that is dynamic and to protect consumers from mergers that would create anticompetitive business practices. These laws are enforced by the Federal Trade Commission working with the Bureau of Economics. (Guide to Antitrust Laws, 2015) The Sherman Act banishes any monopolization or attempts thereof. The Supreme Court decided long ago that this act doesn't prohibit every restraint of trade. I only prohibits those that are unreasonable. For example, two people that may want to form a partnership may restrain trade but this is not considered unreasonable. Examples of illegal acts are partnering to fix prices. Fines...

...CHAPTER 10 PERFECT COMPETITION Assumptions of Perfect Competition The most competitive market structure is pure or perfect competition, which is as competitive as possible. As previously mentioned, market structures are models that summarize how certain markets are organized and behave. For each market structure we have a set of assumptions or characteristics that tell us what kind of industries the model will explain. Only industries that meet the assumptions will behave in the way the model predicts. The assumptions of perfect competition are: Many buyers and sellers: There are so many buyers and sellers in perfect competition that no one of them has any influence whatsoever on the market. The number of consumers and producers is so great that any one of them is like a cup of water in the ocean – their presence or absence makes no difference at all to the market. Identical or homogenous product: Every producer in the market makes exactly the same product – consumers are not able to distinguish between the output of one firm and the output of another. There are no labels, brands or any other distinguishing features used to make a product look distinct. Excellent information: Both buyers and sellers in this market have good information about the product, especially the fact that there are many other producers all making the same product. Relatively free entry and exit: Firms are able to move resources in and...

History - Short Assignments

...Assignment 1 How was the south changed? The chief accomplishment of the new south was the expansion of textile production, as the number of cotton mills grew from 161 to 400. There was also an increase in the lumber industry, coal production, and tobacco growth. Although, the majority of southern farmers were not flourishing, which caused sharecropping and tendancy to increase between blacks and whites. The bourbons perfected a political alliance with northern conservatives and economic alliance with northern capitalists. They also reduced state expenditures and public debt. Attitudes about race became more strongly felt and the prospect of an electoral alliance between poor whites and blacks that could threaten the power structure became a possibility, so the southern states came up with various ways to disenfranchise blacks. Also, “Jim Crow” laws were enacted to mandate public separation of the races. Legalized segregation reinforced the notions of white racial superiority and African-American inferiority, creating an atmosphere that encouraged violence, and during the 1890s lynching’s of blacks rose significantly. Define the New West. After 1865, the federal government encouraged western settlement and economic exploitation. The transcontinental railroads opened the western half of the nation to economic development and created an interconnected national market. Needing rapid communication, companies built telegraph lines along the railroad as the track was laid...

Just the Basics Chapter Overview Pricing is the second element in the marketing mix. It plays a powerful role, and that role is detailed in this chapter. There are several sections to this chapter and a lot of material to address. The chapter begins with discussing what a price actually is. It makes the point that price is more than just the money the buyer hands over to the seller—the broader view is that the price is the sum of all the values that the buyer exchanges for obtaining or using the product. There is also a brief discussion of dynamic- versus fixed-price policies, and how we as a society have evolved from dynamic to fixed and back to dynamic again. The chapter then moves into the heart of pricing. Both internal and external factors that...
