Do Computers Result in Unemployment

...Many commentators linked the two and the matter became a great concern that the computer revolution which was only starting at that time would remove any need for the people to work. It was thought the need for all the jobs like proof readers, library assistants, mail couriers, programmers, accountants, financial analysts, secretaries, administrators, etc will be removed which will create unemployment. Not having anyone who currently fits this role, a need has arisen for recruiting to solicit candidates with the necessary attributes to fulfill the company’s needs. The HRIS Supervisor will be responsible for the overall “health” of the HR and Payroll system(s). To develop the competency model for HRIS Supervisor, XYZ used the O*Net Website and reviewed both the Computer Systems Analyst and Human Resources Manager jobs pulling relative competencies from each to make up the HRIS Supervisor competencies. The areas that the competency model addresses are Tasks, Tools & Technology, Knowledge, Skills, Work Activities and Work Styles. ...contained the five key characteristics of modern computers:- 1. An input device 2. Storage for numbers waiting to be processed 3. A processor or number calculator 4. A unit to control the task and the sequence of its calculations 5. An output device Augusta Ada Byron (later Countess of Lovelace) was an associate of Babbage who has become known as the first computer programmer. An American, Herman Hollerith, developed (around 1890) the first electrically driven device. It utilised punched cards and metal rods which passed through the holes to close an electrical circuit and thus cause a counter to advance. This machine was able to complete the calculation of the 1890 U.S. census in 6 weeks compared with 7 1/2 years for the 1880 census which was manually counted. In 1936 Howard Aiken of Harvard University convinced Thomas Watson of IBM to invest $1 million in the development of an electromechanical version of Babbage's analytical engine. The Harvard Mark 1 was completed in 1944 and was 8 feet high and 55 feet long. At about the same time (the late 1930's) John Atanasoff of Iowa State University and his assistant Clifford Berry built the first digital computer that worked electronically, the ABC (Atanasoff-Berry Computer). This machine was basically a small calculator. In 1943, as part of the British war effort, a...

...George Babbage is an experienced software developer working for Acme Software Company. Mr. Babbage is now working on a project for the U.S. Department of Defense, testing the software used in controlling an experimental jet fighter. George is the quality control manager for the software. Early simulation testing revealed that, under certain conditions, instabilities would arise that could cause the plane to crash. The software was patched to eliminate the specific problems uncovered by the tests. After these repairs, the software passed all the simulation tests. George is not convinced that the software is safe. He is worried that the problems uncovered by the simulation testing were symptomatic of a design flaw that could only be eliminated by an extensive redesign of the software. He is convinced that the patch that was applied to remedy the specific tests in the simulation did not address the underlying problem. But, when George brings his concerns to his superiors, they assure him that the problem has been resolved. They further inform George that any major redesign effort would introduce unacceptable delays, resulting in costly penalties to the company. There is a great deal of pressure on George to sign off on the system and to allow it to be flight tested. It has even been hinted that, if he persists in delaying the system, he will be fired. What should George do next? Identify the pertinent clauses in the ACM/IEEE Software Engineering Code of Ethics that...
