Many are working on raising awareness of the accommodations and that anybody with a terminally ill disease has the right if they so choose to die. They are also making sure that the patients understand that there is no going back so medical groups one of which the Compassion & Choices, have set up such things are webinars, panels, and telephone lines for information to help ensure that the patient knows what’s going to happen and if they are totally ready for the outcome. ...be the place where true beauty can be known" (Tippetts). These are such beautiful words that hold an immeasurable amount of wisdom, spoken by a dying woman. Kara Tippetts, a thirty-eight year old battling cancer implored a fellow cancer fighter, Brittany Maynard, to not end her own life with the assistance of a physician. Physician assisted suicide is when a patient with a terminal diagnosis is deemed sick enough to end their own life through lethal doses of medicine provided by a doctor. It is a practice that has been on the rise beginning in the early 2000's. Its main purpose is to allow patients to "die with dignity" and end their suffering. While...

...HSC ENGLISH CREATIVE WRITING: PERSUASIVE SPEECH EUTHANASIA Imagine a world where anyone, even the curably ill or depressed, is easily assisted in suicide. Where someone else decides when you’re life is no longer worth living. Where it is a societal expectation to die rather than receive long-term care. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the world that awaits us if we legalise euthanasia. Euthanasia, or assisted suicide, is defined as the practice or act of ending the life of a terminally ill person, usually by lethal injection. Though there is no exact specification for what ‘terminally ill’ may pertain to. Who would this definition extend to and who would be eligible to be euthanized? Some laws state that “terminally ill” means that death will occur in a relatively short time. Others are specifically stating within six months or less. Though this definition is futile, as medical experts state it is virtually impossible to predict the life expectancy of each specific patient. As this has been realised, numerous euthanasia activists have increasingly replaced references to ‘terminal illness’ to phrases such as ‘hopelessly ill’, ‘desperately ill’, ‘incurably ill’. In Thomas E. Joiner’s journal Suicide and Life- Threatening behaviour, an article described the guidelines for assisted suicide to be for those with a hopeless condition. The definition of ‘hopeless condition’ included terminal illness, severe physical or psychological pain, physical or mental debilitation or deterioration...

...Persuasive Speech: Euthanasia. The word “Euthanasia” comes from the Greek words meaning “good death.” In practice, it has come to mean the selective killing of those who are old, young and sick. Worldwide, support for the practice appears to be increasing. However, in today’s society, there are deeper and more layers of meaning to euthanasia than before. There are three basic types of euthanasia: Voluntary, non- voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia concerns itself with the express wish of a mentally competent person to die through the assistance of others. Voluntary euthanasia can further be divided into two categories: passive voluntary, which is the specifically requested withholding of unwanted medical treatment, and active voluntary which is the deliberate action of killing the patient at that patients informed request. Should dying human beings be made to suffer horribly during their last days in this world before looking forward to a painful and undignified death when they wish it to be otherwise? The answer is no. As such voluntary euthanasia should be legalized for the terminally ill patients. For many people, euthanasia is a preferable option to dependence and unbearable suffering. A study was conducted on patents’ assessment of states worse than death by Robert Pearlman, a physican specializing in geriatric care at the Seattle Veterans Heath Center. In depth interviews were held with 56 suffering from cancer, AIDS, or who had spent time in a coma from...

Persuasive

...Persuasive Speech Ideas These penguins are persuading their friends to take a dip in the cool water... but you can persuade our class on any of the following ideas or come up with one of your own. Remember these are broad topics so make sure you narrow your area and choose your side so that you can properly defend your position. Also I NEVER censor speech topics HOWEVER keep in mind I want the ideas fresh, some topics are very OVER DONE - for example: "smoking is bad for you" - no kidding I think we would all agree with that. "everyone should go to college" - DUH you are preaching to the choir. "std's are bad you should protect yourself" - well there is a new idea. "drinking and driving could kill you or someone you love" - again no one would argue with that logic. So if you are going to pick a topic make sure you approach it in a fresh and exciting way - for example: "Barbie is a good role model" "Smoking Cigarettes are bad for you, so smoke cigars!" 1. same sex marriage 2. adoption 3. heaven and hell (careful to not preach to your audience) 4. abortion (overdone) 5. TV violence 6. gun control (overdone) 7. TV ratings 8. internet 9. profiling 10. Vietnam 11. immigrant laws 12. exercise 13. ...PAD 525 Discussions 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & so on……. Hope this helps ! Review Texas v. Johnson. Assuming you want to sustain the conviction, make the best argument you can for how that can be reconciled with the First Amendment. Of the opinions that would have sustained the conviction, which do you find most persuasive and why? Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), was an important decision by the Supreme Court of the United States that invalidated prohibitions on desecrating the American flag enforced in 48 of the 50 states. Justice William Brennan wrote for a five-justice majority in holding that the defendant Gregory Lee Johnson's act of flag burning was protected speech under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Gregory Lee "Joey" Johnson, then a member of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade, participated in a political demonstration during the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. The demonstrators were protesting the policies of the Reagan Administration and of certain companies based in Dallas. They marched through the streets, shouted chants, and held signs outside the offices of several companies. At one point, another demonstrator handed Johnson an American flag stolen from a flagpole outside one of the targeted buildings. When the demonstrators reached Dallas City Hall, Johnson poured kerosene on the flag and set it on fire. During the burning of the flag, demonstrators shouted such phrases as, "America, the red, white, and...

Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
