“At work, engagement is lacking; so is meaning,” written by Neil Amato is an article that was published on August 01, 2012 on the Chartered Global Management Accountant website. This article is reflecting on a recent survey that shows lower loyalty and motivation through a five year slide in those measures of employee engagement. The article suggests that there are three ways in which companies can keep their employees engaged. First, companies need to provide their employees with meaningful work. This can be determined by what motivates the employee and often times can fall upon the boss to do the motivating. Second, Companies need to recognize their employees and reward them for what they have done. This reward program needs to be tied to the employees past work with a measurable contribution or the program will not be valued. Lastly, the article suggests that giving employees influence will allow the employee to feel like what they are doing is meaningful. Allowing an employee to solve problems on their own or have some control over their work schedule makes individuals feel empowered and allows them to feel like they have some impact.

It has been said that the average college graduate will work for nine different companies before they find their match and settle. In this day and age more individuals are going to college and getting advanced degrees to allow them more opportunities within the workforce. Therefore, they are more valuable and if they are not motivated, recognized or given influence then they can easily go to another company to find these characteristics.

The author, Neil Amato, writes without using a lot of technical terms which assists with the ease of reading. The author also does a great job laying out the three points which helps with the flow of the article.
