Question No. 3. My individual, Athena Salman, displays public service and public policy on a day-to-day basis by engaging with potential and existing voters. In many of her conversation with voters, she tries to make sure citizens understand their role in shaping public policy. Citizens have the choice to take part of the election process or make actual policies by lobbying, protesting and keeping elected officials accountable for their action or lack thereof. Engaging with voters has been a yearlong commitment by Athena that has resulted in a better Arizona. By that, I mean there was an increase in voter turnout in the Arizona state primary within the democratic party. The turnout increased about 30% compared to the last election in 2012. In 2012, there was a total of 7,100 votes, in contrast, 2016 had over 8,400 votes. With more voter turnout, this allows a better accuracy of what issues matters the most within the district and which candidate is more likely to fulfill those promises. Just with Athena’s campaign alone, 200-300 people became newly registered voters. Not having a current business card made the whole experience a little less professional. The attempt by Athena to create a state work study sounded like a tremendous idea to make the burden of paying for school a little easier for the low-income students. With the current body of legislators, I do not believe a bill like that will even make it pass the committee. The idea of the government having to pay for 50% is something Governor Doug Ducey will not be a fan of. As we have been reading in class for the past couple of weeks, Governor Dough Ducey will not break the promise of increasing taxes, especially for something like higher
