...Community Windshield Survey Susan Holcomb Community Health Nursing NR443 Chamberlain College of Nursing January 19, 2014 Community Windshield Survey The community I have chosen is Douglasville, Georgia which is about 20 miles west of Atlanta, Georgia and is located inside the Atlanta Metropolitan area. While driving through the community, it seems to be like most other communities in that you can be driving through a beautiful neighborhood and two streets over you can end up in the poverty stricken area where there are drug houses. Douglasville is a very family friendly city. There are lots of young families, middle aged families and a fair amount of young Grandparents who are primary care givers for their grand kids. It is predominately white at 83% with 13% being of African American decent and other races at 4%. Most of the people and families that I was able to see driving through the community were clean and seemed well kept up. Some appeared to be well nourished; some overweight and some appeared to be fit. During the evening survey, I noticed the night life of downtown Douglasville – there were a couple of sports bars in the area with mostly males drinking. It did not appear to be unruly but it was loud. The homes in the community are of a variety. Some neighborhoods, the houses are set far apart, some neighborhoods they were too close to each other; however, this was on purpose. I chose to write about Andrew Young because of his strong feelings about the rights of black Americans. He felt that everyone, black or white, should have equal rights. Andrew fought along the side of Martin Luther King, Jr. and continued the work after King's death. The Civil Rights Movement required many dedicated and determined souls. ...1936, the wife of a NBC executive was murdered and the killer caught partly due to fibers from twine used to bind her during the murder. Ted Bundy was convicted of the murder of a 12-year old girl partly due to fibers found in his van. The trial of Wayne Williams, also based on fiber evidence, differed from other cases in several significant ways. From July 1979 to May 1981, thirty black children and young men were reported missing or found dead in the area of Atlanta, Georgia. The Georgia State Crime Lab found yellow-green nylon fibers and violet acetate fibers on the bodies and clothing of victims. The fibers from the different victims were generally similar to each other, linking them to a single source and tying them to one killer. The Wayne Williams case was the first time fiber evidence played a significant role in a case involving a large number of murder victims. An Atlanta newspaper wrote an article about several different fibers being located on the bodies. After the article, bodies located in the Atlanta area rivers were nude or clothed only in underwear. The release of the information caused a change in the way the suspect disposed of bodies, in an apparent effort to eliminate fiber evidence. Media attention appeared to result in a change in pattern of the suspect. Media attention on the murders and the Williams trial was unique due to the amount and detail of the coverage. ...DISCUSSION: Race, Racism and Sport -- The myth of the superiority of the Black male athlete The prompt to this discussion dictates I articulate why the “common sense” notion that African-Americans dominate sports is false. Excuse me for playing the devil’s advocate, and hopefully I do not lose points for disregarding the instructions, but after reading the chapter I see things differently and an important point needs to be made. If anything, I am inclined to argue Coakley’s hypothesis, along with the other research and history included therein, does more to reinforce the idea that African-Americans dominate sports than it does to discredit the notion that has developed into a stereotype. In my opinion, Coakley’s hypothesis serves to provide sound reasoning and explanation as to how, and why, African-Americans have come to dominate sports in modern America. When I say, “dominate sports” be aware I’m using the phrase quite loosely. I’m referring to the overwhelming majority of African-Americans that make up professional basketball and football teams as well as their collegiate counterparts. In no way am I saying that African-Americans are more talented or perform better statistically; instead, I mean to say that they dominate the populations—there are just way more of them on the field of play. Va. board members to construct a new long-term acute care (LTAC) facility. An LTAC is designed for patients whom require hospital stays of 25 days or more. Recently the U. Va. had been facing capacity issues with an inadequate number of beds. The hospital would gain an additional 25 bed days per patient transferred to the LTAC, thus increasing revenues from patient’s insurance and increasing patient care. Fitzgerald’s previous proposal for the LTAC facility in 1999 was declined by the board. Although recent regulation put a halt to new construction of LTAC facilities beginning in January 2007, Fitzgerald was determined to convince the board of the value the investment would provide. The board required certain restrictions with new capital investments. First, a 5.0% profit margin as the minimum on new investments, with excess to be reinvested into teaching and research. Second, to maintain its AA bond rating in order to keep future borrowing costs low. The LTAC total investment is estimated at $15 million for the 30 year project. Fitzgerald believed he could use bank loan financing to not jeopardize the AA rating.
