Psych 640 week 3 Individual VISUAL AND VERBAL IMAGERY paper
Write a 500- to 700-word magazine article that discusses visual and verbal imagery. Include the following in your article:
A contrast of verbal and visual imagery
An argument about which of these you consider most important
A justification of your argument with research
Include at least three scholarly peer-reviewed articles, in addition to the course text.

Imaginations allow individuals to use information and construct his or her own ideas. For example, individuals can imagine what his or her dream home looks like. This individual can see the home and describe what the home looks like. Anderson (2010) defined mental imagery as the processing of perceptual information without an external source. Visual imagery is the brain’s way of processing information as if the individual is actually seeing it; whereas, verbal imagery is the processing of information as if the individual is saying or describing the information. Visual and verbal imagery can use cognitive maps to make sense of his or her environment. A careful analysis of visual and verbal imagery allows an individual to draw conclusions about which form of imagery is important to them.
Types of Imagery
Visual Imagery
Visual imagery is activated within the individual’s occipital cortex area (Fery, 2003). Motor actions require individuals to assess the size and shape of objects; thus, visual imagery provides the positions and movements associated with these tasks (Fery, 2003). Fery (2003) conducted an experiment in which individuals were shown a movement and were required to imagine the movement. The individuals were asked to draw the movement in which they had seen (Fery, 2003). The results confirmed visual imagery is appropriate when individuals are required to replicate a drawing (Fery, 2003). This particular drawing required the individuals to focus…...

Nursing Expertise Self Report and Reflection

...Nursing Expertise Self-Report Scale and Reflection Dawn Haag HCS/350 October 29, 2012 Polly Hanson The purpose of this paper is to provide my reflection of the results of The Nursing expertise self-report scale and how the results will be used to improve communication skills in health care settings. The scale used in this assignment, developed from Patricia Benner’s model of clinical competence, measures self perception by a nurse progressing from novice to expert. Her model suggests a link between experience and expertise using a scoring method. “The nurse-expertise self report scale has 20 items scored using a Likert Scale from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree” (Hansten & Jackson, 2009, p. 178). Based on the scoring of those 20 items as determined by a point value assigned to expert and novice, this writer scored 85 out of a possible 100. This score, according to Benner’s system, reflects experience resembling closer to expertise rather than novice. Acquiring 28 years of nursing experience, I would expect to have evolved closer to expert than novice in patient care, however; I know with each new day and each patient or situation, an opportunity exists to learn something new. I have often identified communication skills as an area that I could improve upon. In the early stages of my career, communicating with my patients seemed easier than communicating with my peers and superiors. Over time, I have become a more confident communicating with my...

Expertise Scale

...Nursing Expertise Self-Report Scale- Reflection Answering the Nursing Self-Report Scale made me felt that I have a long way to go as a Registered Nurse. Based on my answers I am still on a novice stage, far from the expert stage. I mostly base my nursing care about company’s and or employer’s expectations and or rules. There are some few scales that I was not sure of and there are scales that I felt that I’m so naïve to just strictly follow the rules to perform patient care. I guess it just a nature for me to take ownership on my new license and new job. I have to follow the rules to be safe. Another factor that would be preventing from improving is my lack of interpersonal communication skills. I have this passive, shy personality and am reluctant to voice out my opinion. I feel that I just have to go with the flow just to avoid conflict and to please others. The fear of taking risks prevents me from progressing. If I’m resistant to changes I will be forever stuck to the novice stage and never improve to the expert stage. It is very empirical for me to step out my comfort zone and take necessary steps because my priority right now in this nursing career is my patient, not to please my boss or someone else. As an RN, I am now in a position of leadership. I should set aside my fears and focus on what needs to be done. I have to learn to work with others, lead them and get them to understand, and perform the job that needs to be done. I will be willing to ask question or...

Attaining Cost Leadership

...ASSESSMENT REFERENCE: ME/JULY12/2 STUDENT NUMBER: 8772637 ANALYZE THE STEPS TOWARDS COST LEADERSHIP WITHIN THE PRODUCTION RELATIONSHIPS OF A MODERN FIRM. Every business entity must strive to develop a competitive advantage in order to continue as a going concern and thrive amidst severe competition in its industry. A firm can master different strategies in order to ensure its continuous growth and corner a good market share in its industry. One of such strategies is the cost leadership strategy, which seeks to offer a product or service to the consumer at the lowest price possible by identifying the cost centres within its operation and buy implementing strategies to reduce its production costs. A firm pursuing a cost-leadership strategy attempts to gain a competitive advantage primarily by reducing its economic costs below its competitors. The ability of a valuable cost-leadership competitive strategy to generate a sustained competitive advantage depends on that strategy being rare and costly to imitate. (Ecofine 2012). In addition, Allen et al. (2007) cited in Strategy BlogSpot (2011) stated that “a cost leadership strategy is effectively implemented when the business designs, produces, and markets a comparable product more efficiently than its competitors.  The firm may have access to raw materials or superior proprietary technology to lower costs”. Examples of companies that have mastetered the cost leadership strategy include McDonalds and IKEA. For...

Nurse Expertise Reflection Paper

...I, as a Register Nurse do not consider myself an expertise, I still need to learn and am learning new things daily at my work place. I been a Register Nurse only nine years, I worked in med surgery for one year and presently I been working in NICU, I love working with neonates and their families. The best nursing care is given when you are involved with the patient, and their families. I do get attached to the families after many months of caring for them, it is hard not to. Emotionally caring for the patients does not get in the way to give good nursing. I think you have to get emotionally involved to do your best work, if the nurse is passionate on what she/he is doing, the best care will be given. Most of the time the quality of nursing care are based on policy and procedures and at times we have to deviate from this strict rules to do what is best for the patient. I do some time draw from past experiences, at times with hesitation because each situation is different even that at times appear similar. I collect all pertinent information (patient history, labs, Vital Signs, patient assessments, etc…) before I make decisions. I have been able to see if when something goes wrong with the patient but always missed something, as I get more experience in the nursing field I can now automatically see when the patient is taking a turn for the worst. Once in a while there will be a situation when the patient appears fine, and I have a gut......

Nursing Expertise Self-Report Scale Reflection

...Nursing Expertise Self-Report Scale Reflection Marvi Sanchez HCS/350 January 13, 2014 Nursing Expertise Self-Report Scale Reflection The Nursing Expertise Self-Report Scale has given me an assessment of how I see myself as an experienced nurse (Hansten & Jackson 2009).This has provided me an insight of my strengths and weaknesses. My past experiences have helped me in making patient care decisions. Many years working in the orthopedic unit have given me knowledge in caring for my patients. I often get a feeling if my patient will be taking a turn for the worse. My experience has improved my assessment skills. Being aware and knowledgeable of the policies and procedures of the healthcare institution continues to guide me in doing the work that I am supposed to do. I have learned how to organize my work load by prioritizing. By having a plan of care for my patients at the beginning of my shift prepares me to delegate certain tasks or duties in case an emergency situation happens. Getting to know patients has proven beneficial when trying to establish a relationship with them. When I care for my group of patients I make every effort for my patients to trust me as their caregiver. There are many challenges to communicating with patients because each one has a different personality. The different cultural population of our patients is also a factor. I like to get as much information from my patients to get to know them. I start conversations...

... Attaining Expertise Selina Appel Psych/640 Cognitive Psychology May 12, 2014 Brian Newbury Attaining Expertise Encyclopedias describe an Expert as “one who is very skillful and well-informed in any given domain field, one who has acquired special skill in or knowledge about a particular subject through professional training and practical experience” (Webster’s, 1976, p. 800). It is said that humans are the only species to acquire such knowledge in attaining expertise (Anderson, 2009). Expertise refers to the skills, knowledge and characteristics needed to distinguish experts from novices and people with less experience. The process of attaining expertise begins with learning the fundamental skills needed in any particular domain, while learning to apply sound principles of that domain. Another part of processing is to apply critical thinking skills to find solutions to complex problems or situations. Before a person can excel in a particular domain they must first be willing to learn and absorb information. “There is a relatively widespread conception that if individuals are innately talented, they can easily and rapidly achieve an exceptional level of performance once they have acquired basic skills and knowledge” (Ericcon, Krampe, & Tesch-Romer, 1993, p.366). Stages of Acquisition Acquisition is the act of acquiring, learning or developing of a skill. There are three stages of acquisition, cognitive, associative, and autonomous. In acquisition people are able to...
