“If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything.” (unknown). This quote justifies Atticus’s decisions and acts. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird a caucasian lawyer proves to Maycomb the city of racism what integrity really means. The novel takes place during the Great Depression which results to many citizens to be close minded considering Jim Crow laws were developing. Fortunately, Atticus a middle class lawyer disagrees with all acts of segregation and immorality. He sticks true to his values even though the citizens of Maycomb would be talking poorly of him for doing what is right and even correlating Atticus with derogatory terms. Atticus demonstrates the significance of acting with integrity and going against the crowd by …show more content…
One example is when Scout is questioning Atticus why he is defending an African American and Atticus disclosed to her “ For a number of reasons”, said Atticus. “The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again” ( Lee 75). Atticus proves that racial discrimination is nonexistent in his book of morals. By defending an African American not only is he doing good for Tom but he can live with himself knowing he is sticking to his morals and defending the man to the best of his ability. Scout and Jem witness Atticus staying up late at night working on the case which no other lawyer of Maycomb is capable of doing. Another time Atticus is a good father to his children is when he emphasizes to Scout how important it is to understand a person before thinking poorly of them when Scout is judging others. “First of all”,he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-”(Lee 30). This quote demonstrates that Atticus wants Scout to realize that everyone is not the same, every has a different perspective and one should empathize with one another. By teaching Scout his own ways of life, Atticus is a role model to Scout on how to be a congenial person. In conclusion, Atticus

The Emperor's Club

...J Gomez September 24, 2012 Business Ethics/ The Emperor’s Club The Emperors club shows the complexity of teacher- student relationships through a moral lens; the DVD subtly reveals the complex connections among fairness, trustworthiness, personal integrity and self-respect. All of which are represented in the organizational culture of St. Benedict’s, and relate to organizational ethics in that the school and the teachers define the values, beliefs and norms which are shared by all the employees. Teachers must make a series of judgments over time. Teachers, striving for fairness conceived of as strict impartiality, must aim to apply the appropriate standards over and over again in a consistent way to student’s performance. One can also note that teachers play many other roles besides that of being a judge of students ’work and conduct, as a result, they may have considerable difficulty achieving strict impartiality. Some might suggest of these roles involving caring for students that caring might trump fairness. In The Emperor’s Club, Mr. Hundert’s emotional involvement with Sedgwick Bell, the student he is trying to inspire, clearly clouds his judgment, because he changes Sedgwick Bell’s grade. The fact that teachers play multiple roles with students with whom they have developed strong emotional relationships adds a special level of complexity to judging their work impartially. Teacher’s serve a diverse group of people, including students, employers and parents...

Reflection on My Personal Values

...As I considered my personal values and the values taken into consideration in the simulations, I concluded that my personal value system had not changed but had expanded. Before performing the simulations, my personal value system consisted of values such as integrity, respect, trust, loyalty, and quality relationships. The new values that I have added to my value system are time and confidentiality. In the following sections, I will discuss my values on time, confidentiality, and loyalty – an existing value. Valuing Time Time has become one of my values because everything that I do and every decision that I make depends upon how I allocate my time to perform and complete my tasks. I also consider time to be an important value because I must consider it when I create and plan schedules to show when project assignments are to be completed. And, time plays an important role on my job when I have to set up conference calls with out-of-state vendors or customers to finalize decisions and job assignments. Valuing Confidentiality Confidentiality has become one of my values because it is important for me to be aware of how I handle confidential information. Confidentiality is very important in my line of work because many of my job assignments involve classified information that is authorized for only certain individuals to handle. Confidentiality is also crucial because I must always be mindful of whom I discuss my job responsibilities with, conceal classified...

...One of the critical components of an organization is its performance management system. A performance management system is important to organizations of any size because it is the process that identify and implement ways to increase output in a strategic manner. Highly effective performance management systems not only help organizations grow, they employ systematic and supportive methods that allow all facets of the organization to perform at optimal levels. As companies grow and change, they often find it necessary to redesign and improve practices, policies, and/or procedures that result in the optimal functioning of the organization. One of the organizations that found it necessary to redesign its performance management system is the Hershey Company. Faced with an aging workforce of baby boomers and many new hires of millennial workers (the generation of workers in their twenties), the Hershey Company redesigned its performance management system in order to appeal to its diverse workforce. The redesigned system resulted in two major components. The first component included the company allowing goals to be set and tracked by employees. The second component of the redesigned performance management system included the component that the company was not just driven by outcomes measures, but also whether or not the outcomes were achieved with values aligned to the company. Given the challenges of dealing with organizational change from seasoned employees along with...

Business Succeeds When It Cares About Community

...Business succeeds when it cares about community “The primary objective of a firm is to maximise its profit and its primary accountability is towards its shareholders/owners” Although I can see how in most instances the main objective of a firm is to maximise it’s profit, I do not believe that it necessarily follows that the primary accountability is to the shareholders and owners. I would like to present the following argument that suggests real success can be achieved by working with and caring for communities and stakeholders. If we were to believe that companies would only succeed by looking after their shareholders we would surely limit the opportunities for any firm to have any community purpose and would remove any of the benefits that can be achieved by working with other key stakeholders. Firms can benefit greatly from interaction with wider stakeholders and can reap benefits when they care about their communities because these communities can be seen to work together with firms to support mutual success. In outlining my views I will refer to three theories, namely stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory and agency theory and make a case for how an interaction of these theories will support my views that business succeeds when it cares about its community. Stakeholder Theory, (Financial Times Lexicon, 2011), ‘Stakeholder theory suggests that...

I also developed the communication skills necessary to interact effectively with others in any setting or situation. Preparing for life means building personal integrity, developing a sound sense of values, increasing the capacity and willingness to serve. Education must have its roots in moral principles." 2 “Circumstance does not make the man; it reveals him to himself.” In recent years, many individuals and companies have been caught and imprisoned dir deceitful financial tactics and financial statement fraud. Especially in accounting, individuals with morals and a sense of ethics are ever increasingly needed. Professor use a lot of examples to instruct the relationship between information technology and people. As we know, companies use information technology to increase their profits. The example of Bestbuy attracts me a lot. As we can see, people always go to Bestbuy to try the products and purchased the item on Amazon.com as Amazon offers a cheaper price than Bestbuy. Then we talk about the three applications of IT, they are supply chain management(SCM), customer relationship management(CRM) and enterprise resource planning(ERP). And the five forces(entrants, competitors, substitution, suppliers, buyers) are important for a company. We have also learned the generic strategy in the class, Companies should choose a strategy to be mainly use when they enter a new market. Also, we have learned the value system and value chain. Value system is the personal and cultural values used for ethical. For the value chain, we learned how to use support actions in different situation. Since the Army Regulation states that it is up to the command on how to destroy “SECRET” and “CONFIDENTIAL” documents, I would review my Unit SOP.
