n Overall Definition of Augmented Reality (AR): Augmented Reality (AR) refers to a live view of physical real world environment whose elements are merged with augmented computer-generated images creating a mixed reality. The augmentation is typically done in real time and in semantic context with environmental elements. By using the latest AR techniques and technologies, the information about the surrounding real world becomes interactive and digitally usable (Carmigniania, 2011). For example, according to Ronald Azuma, Research at Nokia Research Centre, an AR user could see the real world and computer-generated images projected on top of that world by wearing translucent goggles (Azuma, 1997).
Virtual Reality verses Augmented Reality: Most of the people may be confused with Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), a concept very similar to Augmented Reality. Here is the main difference between AR and VR. VR is a totally artificial environment that created by computers that allowed users to immerse with this environment. 3-D image is a good example of VR. However, AR is a real-time direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment that has been augmented by adding virtual computer-generated information to it (Hermans, 2000). According to Billinghurst, director of the Human Interface Technology Laboratory in New Zealand, AR allows the users to see the real world at the same time as virtual imagery attached to real locations and object, unlike VR that draw users away from the real world and onto the screen (Billinghurst 2002) .
The Purposes of Augmented Reality: Augmented Reality aims at simplifying the user’s life by bringing virtual information not only to his immediate surroundings, but also to any indirect view of the real-world environment, such as live-video stream. AR enhances the user’s perception of and interaction with the

...Augmented Reality: Linking real and virtual worlds A new paradigm for interacting with computers Wendy E. Mackay Department of Computer Science Université de Paris-Sud ORSAY-CEDEX, FRANCE E-mail: mackay@lri.fr ABSTRACT A revolution in computer interface design is changing the way we think about computers. Rather than typing on a keyboard and watching a television monitor, Augmented Reality lets people use familiar, everyday objects in ordinary ways. The difference is that these objects also provide a link into a computer network. Doctors can examine patients while viewing superimposed medical images; children can program their own LEGO constructions; construction engineers can use ordinary paper engineering drawings to communicate with distant colleagues. Rather than immersing people in an artificiallycreated virtual world, the goal is to augment objects in the physical world by enhancing them with a wealth of digital information and communication capabilities. KEYWORDS: Augmented Reality, Interactive Paper, Design Space Exploration, Participatory Design INTRODUCTION Computers are everywhere: in the past several decades they have transformed our work and our lives. But the conversion from traditional work with physical objects to the use of computers has not been easy. Software designers may omit small, but essential, details from the original system that result in catastrophic failures. Even the act of typing is not benign: repetitive strain...

Business Strategy First and Second Mover Advantage

...actions based on other factors. There also are dangers or disadvantages of being a first mover. There are three major ones: • There are risks related to being first because of the inability to predict success of the action. • Second movers through reverse engineering or imitation can avoid high development costs. • Extent and range of marketplace competition yields greater potential risk. In some instances, companies that delay their response to a competitive action fail to compete effectively and their performance suffers. However, that may not always be true since it may be more appropriate to be a second or late mover. First mover advantage example product Google Glass (By Google Company) – First Generation of AR Glasses (Augmented Reality). ...Wearable Computers EEE 439 What is a Wearable Computer? As we continue to integrate computers into our everyday lives at an ever faster rate, the idea that a static desktop, or even a portable laptop can fulfill all of our computing needs is becoming increasingly more ridiculous. The integration of technology constantly creates situations in which we pause and think, “If only I had a computer,” The wearable computer does this. It goes where you go, it does what you do. Its there when you want to use it, unobtrusive when you don’t. So what is a wearable computer? Why don’t we just put our laptops on a sling? In 1998, Steve Mann gave a keynote address at the International Conference on Wearable Computing in which he explained the operational modes of wearable computers and six defining traits of a true wearable computer. According to Mr. Mann, the wearable computer creates three new modes of interaction between human and computer which have not existed before. These three new modes of operation are Constancy, Augmentation, and Mediation (Mann, 1998). Constancy means that the computer is always on and available for use by the user; traditional devices are turned off and closed when not in use. Augmentation is the idea that wearable computers will augment the user’s abilities instead of merely providing computing power on demand. Mann splits Mediation into two different areas; Solitude – the ability to cut oneself off from material, and Privacy – the ability to block or modify...

New Consumer Product

...and explain the rationale behind your choices. Marketers have to be innovative when it comes to promoting any type of product. Analyzing and selecting a positioning strategy can mean the difference between success and failure for a new or existing product. In this discussion I will attempt to create a new consumer product, define my target market and an endorser for my campaign and explain the rationale behind my choices and discuss my competition and how we are both poised to compete and differentiate. I believe I have an outstanding idea for a new and innovative product. What is the next best thing from virtual reality? The answer to the question is augmented reality. We see augmented reality used in video games, movies and real world situations. My idea for a new and innovative product is augmented technology within contact lenses. With augmented reality technology and contact lenses, individuals will be able to program directions using GPS to help them go places. The way it can work is while they are driving, the names of the streets will pop up in each intersection giving directions on where to turn and how far the destination is. If they are in an unfamiliar area and would like to know what stores are in the location, they can program the contact lens to have names of stores pop up in the direction they are looking. I have seen this technology work on cellular phones, so why not contact lens? I am sure that the military would also love to get hold of this type of...

Ibea Fall Conference 2015

...Illinois Business Educators Association (IBEA) 53nd Annual Fall Conference 2015 Meet Microsoft Windows 10 and Office 2016 This presentation was given by Corinne Hoisington of Central Virginia Community College and was a general overview of the new Microsoft Windows 10 and a very brief mention of Office 2016. Several promotional videos were shown promoting Windows 10 and it was noted that Windows 10 is not an option and the upgrade will be automatic. Ms Hoisington also discussed the fact that when previous versions of Windows were released, there was a slow adoption of the product because of the fee. With Windows 10, the adoption rate is high with one hundred and fifty million current users because of the fact that it is free. The upgrade to Windows 10 is fairly quick and there is no data loss. As mentioned previously, Windows 10 is free for the life of the machine on which it is installed. This was a business decision by Microsoft to get everyone on the same operating system. Microsoft will update Windows 10 and will provide support. This, however, is the last operating system that Microsoft will release. As of January 31, 2016, Microsoft support for any version prior to Windows 10 ceases. The question to still be answered is if printers will interface with Windows 10 and if security patches will function. Microsoft Office will also no longer support Internet Explorer. As a side note, an interesting fact discussed was since the number nine is an unlucky number...

...Reality Gets Better Virtual reality generates images through the computer. Augmented reality is real-word images that are augmented by computer. What makes virtual reality and augmented reality different are: The goal of augmented reality is to confuse consumers so they cannot tell the difference between real world images and augmented reality. The goal of virtual reality is to give consumers the perception of the virtue world (Laudon and Laudon, 2012). More companies are using augmented reality to make their products more appealing to consumers. Cell phones are basically portable computers and consumers are basically using their cell phones for everyday use. Augmented reality is so appealing to marketer because it sell products. Real estate shopping applications allow consumers to drive or walk past properties that are for sale, point their cell phones at the property of choice and information about the property will be displayed on the cell phone. This is helpful if you are a consumer that does not like to deal with real estate agents (Laudon and Laudon, 2012). The Apple iPhones has various augmented reality applications. One that is popular with my neighbor is the Golf Rangefinder. My neighbor Mr. Barnes is an avid golfer and uses the golf application every time it is time for him to find a course to play. Golf rangefinder can display the range of the golf course and golf rangefinder is not a free application (Apple, 2012). The AR Soccer application is popular by my 10...

Is Video Marketing Replacing Print Marketing or Are They Two Complementary Communication Tools Which Can Co-Exist?

...changing and evolving over the years. Moving from print, TV and radio ads we have recently, in the last decade or so, seen the rise of internet as a medium for marketers to showcase their products and services. The rise of the internet saw marketing grow from mere printed advertisements to more appealing video advertisements online. Now, with technology advancing at such unfathomable rates, we are now moving towards what is being called ‘integrated marketing’. What I ‘experienced’ that day was integration of different aspects of marketing to provide a wholesome experience to the consumer. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. From simple videos being played as one focuses the camera on barcodes to an almost-real experience with Augmented Reality systems, we are drifting towards being a world where the physical and digital worlds will merge seamlessly to engage the consumer in every aspect of his life. Neither video marketing nor print marketing have the wherewithal to thwart each other but it is only by working in tandem can they achieve their sole objective, reaching out to the customers and make them reach out for...
