Auslan and English are suggested to share a wide range of similarities and differences. Australian Sign Language, abbreviated to Auslan, is the acknowledged language of the Australian Deaf and Hard of Hearing community while English is the primary spoken language of the Australian Hearing community (Johnston & Schembri, 2007). The apparent difference between these languages is that they employ different modalities: English is a vocal language that relies on the articulation of sounds whereas Auslan is a visuo-spatial language that relies on facial and manual features to convey meaning.
